They just have to commit to the 5th year, next year is his fourth. By the time his fifth year rolls around, there will only be one qb on the roster making 18M+ a year.TheSkeptic wrote: ↑23 Dec 2022 17:45I have to agree in theory with Yoop. QB's are more important than guards. Pretty obvious that the Packers are not going to be able to afford 20 mil for Love's 5th year now. Got to protect the old man, priority is the status quo.

They won’t pay Love if they believe Love is a bust. Full stop, that’s the only reason they wouldn’t pay his 5th year.
I think the person who is going to be Penny pinched the most due to this deal is the guy who just tore his acl…Gary.
Gary was actually overpaid for his first two years. He was paid very well to ride the pine as he “developed”. Then he had a nice 3rd year and while he was off to a good 4th year..the defense was still bad with him in there. Gary has shown he is a pass rusher..which is valuable..he hasn’t shown to be versatile though in terms of setting an edge or defending the run. I think he may be in danger of taking a hike.
As far as Jenkins goes..it was good to pay him. He’s versatile and I don’t hold it against him that he came back and struggled after tearing his ACL. At least he came back, unlike Bakh. The packers underpaid for Jenkins for a while, it was right to pay him. Gutey doesnt have many great draft picks, gotta take care of the ones he does have.
The problem with the team is bad contracts like Rodgers and Bakh, the problem is not paying a guy like Jenkins to stick around.
I’m happy Jenkins is here to stay

people are letting themselves get wrapped up in the money part of these resigns, to me it's just mental frustration, simply because guy's like Russ Ball can find a way to make it work for players they want to keep, usually anyway.
We'll part ways with some aging vets before we allow Gary to go, pass rush is essential, even the best coverage can only hold up for so long without pressure on the QB, Amos is starting to slow down, something will happen with Bahk,, there always seems to be change in the purse for our best young up and comers.
Even Rodgers isn't certain whether he'll play next year, seems a little premature for us to predict much till we know that.
Loves going to have enough money after next year to afford a gold plated clip board

Well Yoop, if money wasn’t a factor I would hope we make all the players billionaires, but the nfl has a salary cap…so money is going to come up when we pay out big money to some players and other players still need to be paid. Not sure why you act surprised.Yoop wrote: ↑23 Dec 2022 18:20people are letting themselves get wrapped up in the money part of these resigns, to me it's just mental frustration, simply because guy's like Russ Ball can find a way to make it work for players they want to keep, usually anyway.

Who do you think we have under contract in 2024 currently that would stop us from optioning Love?TheSkeptic wrote: ↑23 Dec 2022 17:45I have to agree in theory with Yoop. We have consistently, and I have a post a while back exemplifying sharing how we, borrow from future years salaries and how that is smart business.
All combinations of currents contracts aren’t real, releases, restructures, etc. I mean we might be dealing with like $260 million cap by 2024. A 17 per contract for an all pro caliber youngling isn’t gunna effect our QB strategy.
what surprises me Dr. J is that you talk as though this situation is unique to our team, when it is common through out the league to back load contracts, look at the Rams, or KC, you people act as though over paying some players like Rodgers ( which we sure as hell didn't) or Jenkins, whom we probably saved money on is something only the Packers would do, it's the price you pay for having good players.Drj820 wrote: ↑23 Dec 2022 18:38Well Yoop, if money wasn’t a factor I would hope we make all the players billionaires, but the nfl has a salary cap…so money is going to come up when we pay out big money to some players and other players still need to be paid. most teams are up against the cap, the good ones anyway, and like us they also have expensive players to resign, and they are back loading contracts to stay under the cap just like we are, the Rams payed Aaron Donald as much as we'll be paying Rodgers this season, yet I don't hear you bring that up, it's the price you pay and actions necessary to field a competitive team.
and this losing Adams because of Rodgers money is such a load of BS, Adams bought a house in Vegas long before the Rodgers contract restructure, and no way would I ever support paying a WR 30 mil annual, losing Adams would have been more palatable had Guty or Ted brought in his replacements sooner, we all know that.
why do you continue to refer to Jenkins as a top 15 guard? is it because of this season which is obviously a result of the return from his injury, prior he was Sitton good, even better since he was only a 2 season player, and Gary isn't as good a edge rusher as Jenkins was a guard year two, Gary took 3 year to even come close to what Jenkins was as a rookie.
Not to mention Jenkins came back from his surgery fast, we have no idea if that will be the case with Gary, but if he does then Guty and Ball will figure out a way to keep him.
Rams and KC are perfect examples. Rams are awful this year because they have no depth and had a little injury bug and KC had to reinvent the wheel with their HOF qb and coach due to losing tyreke hill (due to salary cap).Yoop wrote: ↑24 Dec 2022 07:02what surprises me Dr. Not sure your point with me, I am glad we signed Jenkins. I just think there is now less money for Gary (who has a torn ACL), and I think wiggle room for his negotiations just got tighter

Except in the NFL, there is a negative interest (considering % of cap) from borrowing from the future with increasing salary caps.
And in 2024 we’ll borrow from 2026, and that is okay and mathematically the correct thing to do.
Gary on 5th year option. Extending him on a big deal creates a ton of cap space. What am I missing wallyuwl?
Read More. Post Less.
I absolutely understand and support the limits of a salary cap. When people say "the salary cap is fake" they are absolutely wrong. There are absolutely limits to what a team can do.
BUT. Rashan Gary is absolutely going to be resigned. Our draft picks that have made it to a 2nd contract is very limited. Rashan Gary was the best Packer this year before he got injured. You absolutely keep your best players.
The Packers haven't hit enough home runs in the draft to have people walk in the open market. The first year we may seriously need to consider not resigning our draft picks is 2026 simply due to how awesome our rookie class is looking so far.
I was on the fence of Jenkins because I thought he would be closer to that $20 Million per year mark. Sounds like his first 3 years is at that $16 MM per year mark. Jenkins could have gotten more if he wanted but I think this is a fair deal for both the Packers and Jenkins.

Feels like we are gonna have to unload Savage, even if it means giving up draft capital to do so, ala Osweiler.

A lot depends on the defensive coordinator we bring in and how he views Darnell.

Yeah can’t believe what I’m hearing. There is absolutely no way Gutenbumst lets Gary walk from this team. He’s a young edge they took at 12th overall. Mistakenly may I add but that’s irrelevant.
They would tag him before letting him go. There are plenty of players to cut ties with to resign him. Rodgers, Bak, Douglas, Campbell, Smith, and Jones could all go to save space.

May be reading the cap sites incorrectly, but what I get is that Rodgers still is a massive negative (68 mil) if released, and Campbell is also slightly negative (4+ mil), so no help there. Bahk saves 6+ Douglas 3, Smith 3, and Jones 10. And, as always, anyone you release has to be replaced.
.
The Packers have mapped out the cap projections through 2028 based on the TV deals signed, including Sunday Ticket. So they have insight as opposed to the griping fans who remain blissfully ignorant.
"From TV contracts alone, the NFL will generate at least $125 Billion in revenue over the next decade. It’s a figure that doesn’t even account for the future growth for the NFL International Series or gambling.
League officials also anticipate generating billions of dollars in the coming years thanks to the booming popularity of sports betting. With more states legalizing wagering through sportsbooks, partnerships with companies like BetMGM, DraftKings and FOX Bet will generate even more revenue for the NFL. The NFL salary cap is projected to grow $20-23 million/yr for the next 5 years and accelerate from there
It’s precisely why team values have skyrocketed and billionaires are willing to spend record-setting amounts to buy an NFL team. Panthers were sold for $2.2 billion, the Broncos for $4.6 Billion and the Commanders are coming in north of $7 Billion.
Ultimately, the money NFL players are receiving is just a slice of a massive pie that no other sports league even approaches.
If the projections hold, it won’t be long before quarterbacks make $60 - $65 million per season and the best left tackles in the NFL make $35-38 million."
The players and their agents are acutely aware of what's about to transpire and they'll make sure to get their share of the coming largesse
By 2024, Jenkins recent deal will be considered a steal...
