LaCoach should know the analytics on fumbles, and architect an offensive game play to avoid the avoidable if and when a fumble occurs. This is another reason change is required. There was no excuse for this past dismal 8 and 9 season.

In the Ice Bowl Lombardi removed the sweep play from the game plan because Dallas would have practiced hard in preparation of the sweep play. Can't image LaCoach having either the intellect or instinct to make such a bold move in advance of the Lions - Packers game.

HOF offensive players fumble in big games. Starr did in the Ice Bowl and Dallas ran in a TD on that play. But because GB won the game nobody remembers that. If you touch the ball enough you are going to lose it. I will say Jim Taylor was one back who rarely fumbled.

George Andrie #66 ran in Bart's fumble for a TD. I think I read somewhere that both Don Meredith and Willie Wood fumbled in the Ice Bowl game as well.

To my knowledge there is no vaccine for fumbleitis.

whaaa?

a scheme change from Lombardi is no different then limiting jet sweeps or other motion by Lafleur, and Jones or Dillon are not fumblers per se, this was Jones worst season for coughing up the pig, the last one sticks in our mind because it hurt us worse then most others :idn:

If my memory serves me correctly, the Jones fumble against Detroit was a mental error. Jones was carrying the ball on the wrong side. I don’t think he fumbles if he had carried the ball away from the defenders. If could have been the difference in the game.
Love is the answer…

Fumbling on a day that was incredibly cold is not that unusual. It's hard to hold onto the ball when your hands are that cold.

And Lombardi declared "no gloves!" Although the cotton work gloves they scrounged up wouldn't have helped the ballcarriers anyway.

Fine, I'll do the work. (Originally posted in the wrong thread)...

Mike Wahle said something really interesting about the Jones fumble: he pointed out that Tonyan had a DB to block in the open field, and that (whereas Big Bob simply threw arms at the DB) he needs to "be a hammer" when blocking a significantly smaller player and eliminate the guy from the play.

Instead, the DB got off Tonyan's block and pursued Jones, prompting Jones to throw an arm out to keep the DB from tackling him from one side while carrying the ball in his other arm... which made it easy for the tackler (who hit him on the other side while Jones was looking at the DB and attempting to avoid the DB's tackle) to punch it out.

If Big Bob erases that DB (like a TE should), Jones instead may have turned his attention to the guy who tackled him from the other side --and/or-- protected the rock with both arms.

See for yourself at 5:27 (I've set it to autoplay there); you may have to re-watch a few times to get a good look because it's very "bang-bang."

I think that once a RB gains a certain amount of yardage or knows he is about to experience a bunch of contact, he needs to wrap the ball with BOTH arms, no matter what else is happening.
