Rd 6: Anders Carlson - K

Post by go pak go »

Carlson joined the Tigers in 2017 but redshirted that season as his brother, Daniel, finished his All-American career as the SEC's all-time leading scorer before heading to the NFL. Anders did a solid job taking over his sibling’s duties in 2018 (15-25-60%; two-of-nine from 50-plus yards, long 53 FGs; 44-44 XPs) and in 2019 (18-25-72%, long 52 FGs; 48-49-98% XPs). He had his best year in 2020, receiving second-team All-SEC honors after tying for second nationally with 20 field goals made and tying for ninth-best in the FBS with a 90.9 percent field-goal make rate (24-25-96% XPs). His 2021 season was not as productive (14-21-66.7%, two blocked FGs, long 49; 35-36-97.2% XPs) and ended when Carlson tore the ACL in his left knee (non-kicking leg) trying to recover an onside kick against Mississippi State. He made 12 of 17 field-goal attempts (70.6%) and all 22 extra-point tries in 2022. Carlson was the team's kickoff specialist most of his career, kicking 183 touchbacks on 314 attempts (58.3%). He was also a three-time Academic All-American and selected to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. -- by Chad Reuter

Can't say I love this, but we need a kicker so we will see. Bisaccia worked him out and also had his brother when he was with the Raiders.

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/anders-ca ... 2fa35c795

Overview
Carlson has made kicks in big moments and appeared to be tracking in a good direction back in 2020. However, he has struggled to establish consistency on mid-range kicks and has been poor on kicks from 50 yards and beyond. He’s had too many kicks blocked during his career and doesn’t sport a booming leg on kickoffs.

Strengths
  • Brother is an NFL kicker.
  • Possesses good size and has made kicks in high-pressure situations.
  • Was 4 of 4 from 40-plus yards in dramatic 2019 Iron Bowl win over Alabama.
Weaknesses
  • Career make rate of just 71.8 percent.
  • Struggled to find consistent kickoff depth in 2022.
  • Made just 5 of 17 field goals from 50-plus yards, going 0 for 4 since 2021.
  • Highly inconsistent on mid-range kicks.
  • Slow operation time leads to blocked kicks.

K options were &%$@ after Moody and Ryland were reached on. We probably needn't have drafted any at this point, but whatever, picks this late are just Priority UDFA guys anyway.

Yeah probably a throwaway pick honestly. He’s competition for the dude we have on the roster and now competition will be brought in for both.

Don’t love it.

But at least it happened with Hutchinson and Iosivas off the board for me

Big leg for kickoffs.

This makes me feel a ton better about him. Sounds like continue the trend of having a down year last year.

From his Carlson Media Conference:
Carlson said his agent was getting a lot of calls and he knew he was going to get picked soon. He also knew the Packers liked him so he wasn't surprised they took him.
Carlson said in '21 he tore his knee up and had surgery. His goal was to play the next season and he got back quickly, 6 or 7 months after surgery he was kicking. He was back on the field after nine months and had to kick with a brace on. Said he's been much better since taking the brace off at the combine and in workouts.
Carlson said he fractured his shoulder on a kickoff return. He said he tried to kick through it, but wound up being sidelined 4 to 6 weeks. He said being healthy and getting back to where he was is most important.
Carlson said the knee injury was on his plant leg.

So yesterday we picked a guy named Tucker, and today we picked a guy named Carlson, on the same week that Tucker Carlson was fired from FOX despite having the highest ratings and Aaron Rodgers (himself a big conspiracy theorist who questions things) was finally shipped out of town.

I smell a conspiracy!

If he makes the cut, this will be the first time two brothers have kicked in the same season since the Gramatica's

When I first saw this, I assumed this guy is a camp leg and just some default competition for Crosby, but Packers twitter thinks Crosby is out the door.

Crosby looked like he lost a step the last season or two, but I guess I just didn't view this as the moment we turned the page.

Crosby isn't on the team.

Yeah I know he's a FA, but I just figured it was one of those things where we're going to sign him but are just waiting

Nothing is fun anymore. When I used to deploy we would brew a Gatorade cooler full of stuff from the start of the deployment to the end and sacrifice an unlucky airmen to the gods as a thanks for letting us survive another deployment. Now if we do that we probably get kicked out.

Sad day the amount of bitch ass pussy boys we live with.

He’s 6’5”. Not sure that’s good for a kicker. A lot of length that can affect accuracy. He does have a good percentage on pats.

Norm Johnson was 6'2" and had a great career.

I understand the anxiety surrounding the tallboy Anders pick. There are visions of Anders slipping on the home ice field, and blowing an onside kick or gimme field goal.
