Rank the Roster 2023: #1

Post by Waldo »

Welcome to Rank the Roster 2023. A space filling waste of time to argue about minutiae (and get to know the roster), at the conclusion of which, training camp begins.

As always, the starting list comes from last year's poll results, last year's top 20. Rodgers (#1), Amos (#9), Lazard (#15), and Watkins (#17) are the 4 that are not Packers anymore. I added Love so that QB1 is at least on there. When it gets to 15 players I'll add 5 more from suggestions.

Don't forget, you may make 2 selections now.

I think there's a lot to talk about this year, way more than the recent past. A new #1 for the first time since this thing started.

Rank The Roster: 2023 Edition

1. Current (xx%)[--]

Percent of vote the winner got will be in parenthesis, position change vs. 2019 will be in brackets.

Here's how this works:

Each day there is a new thread/poll, starting at #1, on down to whereever we get. The whole point of this exercise is to have something to talk about in the lean news months to carry us to camp. Each poll will be open for voting for 24 hours. New threads will only be created on weekdays. Ties will cause a runoff poll. You may vote up to TWO players (a change that was made mid-poll last year, seemed to work well).

Simply voting is not enough!

Post why you voted for who you did and provide a player to add to the next poll (every poll will be a list of 15-20 guys, new players added in bunches every few days).

Here's the thing. There is no criteria. This is an exercise to foster discussion therefore there are no clear criteria for ranking. Who is better right now? Who will have the best season? Who was better last year? Sort of a combo of them all? Do you take positional value into account? It really doesn't matter.

Aaron Jones was the face of the offense, and Alexander the face of the defense, easy choices for me, I expect another great season from both.

Gosh I'm really torn on #1.

I'm not sure Bak is that guy anymore. Gary is coming off an acl. Jaire isn't coming off a great year. Noone new is really stepping into the spot (Quay and Watson are still a season from the top 5, let alone #1). Has to be Jones, right? Our one man band when we need a spark.

This year for obvious reasons I think we'll finally see the team stick with running the ball, especially when its working.

Maybe I missed it, but did the team add anyone (FA) relevant at all in the offseason?

I don't think any of the rookies have a clear cut shot at significant early playing time (no Quay this year). Maybe one of the TE's, but which one?

LVN will rotate surely, but I don't think he has the kind of game that will quickly produce (bendy fast guys like young Matthews tend to be the ones that do).
TE's almost never do anything as rookies.
Reed will make some plays, but unless he locks down #3 WR it really isn't worth top 20

Watson definitely needs to be next on the board. Doubs too. Not sure who else.

I go Bakhtiari. Lots of good players, but he's the only HOF-caliber guy on this list. He will turn 32 this year, may be past his prime, but he's not THAT old, and still one of the best in the league at T and playing at a very high level. The injury makes you worry about how long he can play, but it didn't hurt the play itself, still elite.

#2 I think Jaire. He had some lowlights last year but all CBs get beat from time to time. He also showed why he's one of the top CBs in the league last year against Miami's speed demons and shutting out muh Jefftain Justinson. I expect him to keep playing like one of the best at one of the most important positions.

What is best? #1 Best compared to his peers around the league? #2 Best compared to other Packers. #3 Or best for winning games. I went with definition #3, so Love and Alexander.

I totally agree that Watson should be in this list now. You have got to be kidding me, you have Wyatt in the list and not Watson!

I new if Love was on the list you'd chose him, hope he plays up to your expectations.

Jaire didn't have his best season last year but he is still considered a top 10 CB in this league so I went with him.

He's injured which sucks.

But Rashan Gary is the best player on the Green Bay Packers. He was easily our best player from December 2021 to November 2022.

As far as impact is concerned, I think Christian Watson should be very, very high on this list.

Jaire went #1 for me, and I'm a great Kenny C fan, so I took him 2nd despite a down year.

Gary, Bak and Elg are next, then I'll have to do some thinking...

Are we finally going to get rid of the tedious runoff votes this year? We should just let ties be ties. Who cares if two guys are both ranked #11 or whatever?

We could I suppose.

I'll add Watson right away next poll. It'd be a weird situation where a player not in the top 20 last year is in the running for #1; I just copy last year's list into the first poll. That methodology left Tonyan the top player on the poll for a while last year.

I'm surprised at how overwhelming the Jaire vote for #1 is.

Jonesy is close for me, but I think defense will need to carry the day this season so I went Kenny C and Ja.
The Packers lunatic fringe is more visible because of sheer numbers. The Packers have one of the largest fan bases in all of sports. If the fringe percentage is the same as with other teams, then we end up with larger volumes of nut jobs. - JustJeff

Jaire and Jones for me.

I'll probably hop on the Love Train sooner than later.

I think the whole defense started slowwwwwwly, but I feel it would be remis of me not to point out just how slow that dasterdly vile draft pick did last year  17 total pass pressures was was 6 off his pace in 2021 when he finished the season with 47, according to PFR who don't even count spooking the QB, PFF probably ( counting spooks) I think had Gary at 78 Total pressures in 2021, hopefully the defense starts quicker and Gary comes back to 2021 form prior to Guty making him a billionair ;)

I'd have Watson and Nixon on the board.

Jaire Alexander for me. He is a shut down corner. And should be no. 1. Not his fault they don't let him shut down the best WR every week but we saw him take down Jefferson when we finally played him like the killer he is.

Went Clark next. We don't know what any of the guys with blown knees are at the moment. So Bak and Gary drop a little for me.

I would’ve considered Bahktiari and/or Gary. But both are limited due to injury. (69 less than Gary, as his comeback is virtually complete.) So, I went with healthy guys. Kenny Clark would always be a stud anyhow, as long as he didn’t truly digress for good last year.
