Packers Extend Jordan Love 1 year - $22.5 ($13.5g)

Post by BF004 »

Have to think this one through and see some details, not really sure why this would make sense for either party.

So a little higher ceiling for Jordan to possibly get, much lower floor and guarantee for the Packers.

Kind of meh. :idn:

Doesn't really change anything.

I would have tried to add another year personally on the PAckers end, give yourself and extra potential franchise year to play/negotiate with.

It looks/sounds like it gives him the incentives and possibility to reach the 5th-year option money, but guarantees less. Makes sense for the Packers to have a lower guaratee than the 5th-year option and to have incentives.

Makes sense for Jordan because it's more guaranteed than he has ever seen in his life and more than he'd have without the 5th-year being picked up.

I don’t know hey Love would accept this. To me the Packers had to pick up his option. They would look like the biggest idiots if they didn’t.

Guaranteed money is the only thing that matters in these deals.

Wonder if they are trying to get a longer deal done.
Not a longer deal, but a different deal other than picking up the fully guaranteed 5th year option. This was undoubtedly why Gutekunst said what he said in the press conference. Love should fire his agent though, this doesn't have much upside for him, as it stands. It is only a maximum of $2 million extra, but the guarantees are $7 million less.

obviously Guty realizes that until you see a QB in real games with fire breathing pass rush for more then just a few series it's very hard to know just how good a QB is, this is a good contract for the team

Live will be QB1 at least 2 years, barring injury. But I don't really see why either side went through the trouble.

I think $7 million in potential cap space savings would be worth the trouble for the Packers. This is 2024s contract year, so he will play 2023 and 2024 under the current contract.

Gotta save some cap room for the DeAndre Hopkins trade.

A good agent would hold forcing Love to ride pine for 3 years against the Packers. Whether this hid Love or not, a good agent would spin it to where it prevented him from showing what he can do in order to get really paid.

Is there historical evidence to back up such a claim?

If gute really scared Love and Dunn into thinking the 5th year option might really not be picked up, he is a pretty stone cold negotiator.

Seems like a move Love would do if he wasnt confident in his own ability. For instance, if he thinks he is gonna ball in 23 than the 5th year option would be a negative for him because he would be ready to show off for one year and then sign that real money long term contract. This contract seems like a hedge against sucking for both parties. odd.

No they didn't. If he plays well and you are worried about him hitting the market, 'Tag him. And the obvious benefit would have been, if he does not play well or gets injured, they avoid having to pay over $20m for a bad player or still unproven commodity.

For Love, the risk is not getting the option picked up, then getting injured or playing poorly for reasons outside his control, probably never getting a shot at a big payday ever again... significantly bigger risk.

AND THIS:

I don't think it makes as much sense for Love, but this isn't some odd harbinger some want it to be.

why would he do that? Love and Rodgers have the same agent, so trying to get the Packers to play Love sooner would have affected Rodgers, your argument makes no sense, the very best thing that could have happened concerning Love was to sit 3 years, if he played earlier and struggled that would have amounted to less money, and very probably a busted QB

It makes a lot of sense for Love. $13.5m is nice insurance against disaster (season-ending injury before he can play extensively, or some on-field development that prevents him from playing well e.g. OL and/or WR are decimated with injuries). If no such things happen and he's confident in his ability, he probably thinks he can get the full value of the deal.

Here is why I am not sure it makes as much sense for Love:

I can get on board with your last sentence for sure.

It's a win win. Love gets a lot more money this year for being a starter. If he's great, they do a whole new deal next season. If he's not, the Packers can get out of it next year with a lot less of a hit. Made sense for both sides. They could have each held each others' feet to the fire in different ways, but came to a logical solution.
