Packers Extend Jordan Love 1 year - $22.5 ($13.5g)

This very much is a "prove it"-deal he's taking, so the idea that it shows no confidence in himself makes no sense. He has a little security in the guaranteed money for a year, but no long-term security. He's clearly still playing for a Franchise QB extension after the season. Love's own words from not long ago indicate that he would have asked for a trade if Rodgers came back. He patently has confidence in himself.
But he like every player in this game knows injuries and luck are a big part of the sport. That's why every player, even established pros who play the game with a ton of swagger, nonetheless push to get deals with as much guaranteed money as they can, and will often hold out until they get it.
Holding out and trying to minimize risk isn't a sign of a lack of confidence; it's a sign of having a brain. These players see what happens to guys like Earl Thomas (neither side could doubt that *he* can play) who take the risk of playing before they get financial security, then get injured, miss out on a ton of money, and then players learn a very simple lesson:
Don't take dumb risks, secure as much money as you can when you can.

Glad we have something else stupid to argue about.
If Love performs, he earns more money. That actually is Love betting on himself.
If Love performs above expectations the Packers pay him more than he would have made under the fifth year option.
If Love performs up to or above expectations, he will have a new contract in place next year anyway after an actualy evaluation of him as an NFL starter in NFL games.
If he has a career ending injury, he's still set for life if he manages his money.
If Green Bay was assuming Love would fail, they would decline his 5th year option and Love would play out the last year of his rookie year.
I think it's fair for both sides, and makes a ton of sense. Actually fairly creative. Trying to read the tea leaves on this and make it fit a narrative that you already believe and won't compromise on anyway is absurd. It means nothing, except that our QB 1 is under contract for next year.

Pat McAfery had Payton Manning on concerning players going to new teams, specifically QB's, and he said what we all know, and it's pertinent to this conversation, teams will adjust what they have done in the past scheme wise to accommodate that new QB, to the point of bringing in coaches ( Hackett) so the QB can run the offense he's grown use to, changing schemes is to hard to do.Labrev wrote: ↑03 May 2023 08:40This very much is a "prove it"-deal he's taking, so the idea that it shows no confidence in himself makes no sense. Love knows his best chance to succeed is right here where he has learned the same offense for 3 seasons, sure he might have asked for a trade, but that could amounted to a set back and even a bust out, he has the security of knowing the system here and the players and coaches, he was wise to take this deal.

Doesn't look like questioning of one's skills to me...

Good deal for the Packers. Love signed this for one (or both) of two reasons: 1. He wanted more money (signing bonus) this year, 2. He really believes in himself and the team. Those are some tough incentives to earn.
kind of messed up Love could win the SB and not get ALL of the bonus money haha

If he wins the SB he isn't playing a down on the current deal, anyway. It's just a placeholder. I actually think it is more likely than not he doesn't play out the deal. He would have to be entirely middling to not have enough leverage to force an extension and for GB to want to give him one.

Good point and agree.NCF wrote: ↑04 May 2023 11:59If he wins the SB he isn't playing a down on the current deal, anyway. It's just a placeholder. If Love shows he has it I suspect we could have the extension by November.
No guarantee next year was the alternative for Love.
Packers turned what should have been 2 years 23-24 mil fully guaranteed, into 2 years 15 mil guaranteed. Realistically he tops out at 1.5mil of those additional incentives.
I get why anyone would do it because it's still ridiculous money that changes your life. But the deal doesn't exude confidence by either side.

There is another alternative, the Packers picking up the 5th year option which is fully guaranteed.

Or he could be really confident in the defense to carry the team to some wins and a playoff appearance.
That said...
So many of those escalators are tied to unlikely team performance. If Joe Barry does a Barry again, Love can kiss much of that money goodbye no matter how well he plays.
Honestly, I give him a reasonable shot at $2m in escalators. Anything above that and it'll likely be the result of some defense and ST magic. Expecting Love and a bunch of year 1/2 skill players on offense to meet those goals is a tall task.
The escalators are kind disrespectful imo. Wish we gave him something to actually shoot for that was realistic for a first year starter. If he performs reasonably well for a first year guy, I feel he deserves to be well compensated

I was thinking something similar. I feel like the Packers kinda did him dirty on this deal in making most of those escalators outside of his control and/or difficult to achieve.
I'd have thought Love earned some goodwill the past three years. In reality, it looks as though the Packers feel like they did Love the favor by paying him not to play and now he's got to earn his keep.
15 mil for a first year starting QB is like highway Robbery, multi millionaire before even starting , and people act like he is under paid, and the team cheated him, geeesh, thats insane money, status symbol money,
he better earn it.
he better earn it.
The escalators are a marketing ploy for the team and Love - everyone does it though.
This is a really good deal for the pack.
They were saying the same thing as this on NFL radio.
Jason the founder of Over the Cap, and myself have been saying the same thing all along.

I think once GB lost Rodgers, all the leverage shifted to Love. I mean what the heck was GB going to do if Love played hardball? They’ve invested 3 years into this guy and have a rookie draft pick behind him. That’s it.
I think GB picks up Loves 5th year if they had to in the end. Oh well tho, great deal for GB!
Just hope it isn’t a true barometer of what they think of him.

what was Love going to do, no one was going to pay Love what we did, the money is beyond ridiculous now, why would anyone support paying Love more then we gave him, he's lucky Rodgers signed with the Jets so he didn't have to prove his threat to ask for a trade, he sure wouldn't be making 10 plus mil. this seasonDrj820 wrote: ↑04 May 2023 18:54
