Bill Polian shines a light on the cutdown process and how coaches/personnel guys work through it
Its slightly different based on current team status- a playoff contender vs a rebuild

Putting Veterans on the Markets
" The most difficult discussion revolves around veterans you must expose to waivers in order to keep promising rookies who might be claimed. Early in my career, I was party to cut meetings that were emotional and contentious. Position coaches understandably do not want to risk losing trusted veterans in order to keep a rookie they didn’t know well.
Additionally, the special teams coach always has a key veteran non-specialist or two that he does not want to lose. These decisions are more difficult if you are up against the salary cap. I learned early from coach Marv Levy with the Buffalo Bills to make money decisions on veterans in February and not in September when it can impact morale.
Experience taught me to handle hard decisions in advance."

Looking at Labrev's prediction brings to mind, with all the rules around IR and injury, do we consider the "final 53" the cut-day roster, the post-waiver claim roster, the opening day roster, or the roster they settle on after week one where they can IR people who can return and sign vested veterans without their contract being fully guaranteed for the year?
I had similar thoughts this morning. I like how he made it clear in his take.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑28 Aug 2023 13:45Looking at Labrev's prediction brings to mind, with all the rules around IR and injury, do we consider the "final 53" the cut-day roster, the post-waiver claim roster, the opening day roster, or the roster they settle on after week one where they can IR people who can return and sign vested veterans without their contract being fully guaranteed for the year?

from Paul Bretl :
"Tight end Austin Allen had the Packers’ highest run-blocking grade and did so with a decent sample size of 37 run-blocking snaps. Without Tyler Davis, Allen could potentially be the Packers’ fourth tight end, filling the traditional Y-role, which often asks the player to line up inline and block.
He also had the fifth most special teams snaps with the starters on the team."

I believe the Packers could stash Allen on the practice squad without another team picking up him though.BSA wrote: ↑28 Aug 2023 20:53from Paul Bretl :

Not terribly off. Almost nailed the entire defense.

Somewhat interesting looking at the Packers schedule regarding the only 4 CB's.
Bears
Falcons
Saints
Lions
Raiders
Bye
Essentially gives us till week 7 to get Stokes back after the bye.
Not exactly the who's who of teams that will stack you 3 deep at WR. Might really need to rely on a few PS callups, maybe that's as easy as Gaines and SJC. Really don't need to bring one up against Chicago, so only need 2 guys you can bring up twice.

I was thinking about the CB and S depth and remembered that Savage has played slot corner too. Given the added bodies at S, if GB needs a back-up slot corner... maybe they slide Savage in there and use Ford/Owens at S.

Unless 2 corners get hurt in 1 game it isn't going to affect us much.
Palmy - "Very few have the ability to truly excel regardless of system. For many the system is the difference between being just a guy or an NFL starter. Fact is, everyone is talented at this level."
from Bill Huber:
"Undrafted rookie Malik Heath earned his spot on the roster. He got open. He caught the ball. He blocked. The Packers have kept at least one rookie free agent for 19 consecutive years. In talking to a longtime member of the personnel department recently ( Sam Seale) , none – none! – were as consistently impressive as Heath. Not even Sam Shields, who wound up playing about half the defensive snaps for a Super Bowl-winning defense, was so good during his rookie training camp."

Have you seen the field conditions in Chicago ?
Chicago grass always sucks
Minnesota turf is a known death trap
Detroit still uses the crappy slit-film turf that the NFLPA says should be banned
Damn shame we play in a division full of exceptionally &%$@ fields.

from this and a few other articles Minny is the team with slit film, Bakhtiari wouldn't even suit up to play them last season, DEtriot uses Turf, Chicago uses grass, the biggest issue there is the Park district who maintains it run out of allotted money.

From your own article. I wonder if the article mixed up Detroit and Minnesota, because I see where they say Minnesota is 1/4 that has slit film.Yoop wrote: ↑30 Aug 2023 15:29from this and a few other articles Minny is the team with slit film, Bakhtiari wouldn't even suit up to play them last season, DEtriot uses Turf, Chicago uses grass, the biggest issue there is the Park district who maintains it run out of allotted money.

Turf fields have been a topic of debate for more than a decade among NFL Players who believe they are less safe than natural grass. Bakhtiari is among those strongly opposed to playing on artificial fields, especially after experiencing some discomfort in his surgically-repaired knee during a game on turf last season. In Week 9 against the Detroit Lions, he missed most of the second half when the slit film turf caused his knee to flare up.
In the same game, Green Bay’s top edge rusher Rashan Gary tore his ACL, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. A week later, Bakhtiari took to Twitter to express his disapproval of NFL teams who still have turf fields.

The Packers having only four cornerbacks doesn't cut it for me. Heck, they can't even play dime without having to line up with three safeties if one of them goes down in a game. I understand they can elevate one from the practice squad but that's not a sound plan to rely on in the first place.BF004 wrote: ↑30 Aug 2023 09:49Somewhat interesting looking at the Packers schedule regarding the only 4 CB's.

Why not? Granted, it is a short-term solution, but what is the difference?
