First Round Draft Picks on Defense

Post by RingoCStarrQB »

Assuming Eric Stokes returns ............ the Packers will have 8 first round draft picks on defense. That's gotta be unprecedented.

Does it matter when half of them don’t play like it?

Besides Savage, who plays worse than being drafted at the end of the 1st round and is in his 3rd year or more and did not spend the bulk of his 2nd year on IR?

Contrast that with Gary, Alexander and Clark who have become over achievers relative to where they were drafted in the first round.

Savage is bad. Stokes is not a very good CB on top of not even having a place for him to play. Wyatt is a liability in the run game. Clark is not playing well and he didn’t play well last year. He makes huge splash plays but in between he is getting dominated. Quay is making a ton of tackles but there’s no value in them because they’re all 5-8 yards down field. He is trying to run around blocks instead of through them and it’s hurting the run defense. Van Ness isn’t playing well but I expected a Sophomore to struggle early.

Gary is a great player on a pitch count. Jaire is a good player but his most recent action he was getting beat.

Savage is mediocre, not bad. There are a lot of players in the NFL who are worse.
Stokes spent most of last season on IR and is just now coming off PUP.
Wyatt is just starting his second season
Clark IS playing well. He always has.
No value in Quay making a tackle. LOL. In case you did not know, making tackles is his job. LOL
Van Ness is a rookie and not a Sophomore.

You might consider limiting your intake. It obviously affects your ability to read what you are replying to. "and is in his 3rd year or more and did not spend the bulk of his 2nd year on IR?"

come on for krist sakes

Gary is on a pitch count because he's coming back from a ACL, and Alexander has the Barry disease, it's contagious, everyone has it.

Savage has always been better then the schemes he's asked to play in, he's been one of our best defenders this season.

and why would you expect Quay to make tackles at the los, Barnett never could 20 years ago working in a 2 gap nickel front either.

never understood why people think a 240 lb ILB should be able to run through 320 lb O liners, without getting pushed back into the ILB, which is fair to say as it is what I see, your blaming the lber for the fails of our DC,( or the positional coach Jerry Montgomery).

our problems imho are mostly scheme related, we don't have a defender that wouldn't benefit from better defensive schemes, nada, not one.

Barry makes changes, or Lafleur needs to fire him, no middle ground any more.

Gary and Clark are not overachieving per draft position. They play like first round draft picks. Many of the other first rounders simply do not, healthy Jaire does. Quay does.

True, but Wyatt is just starting his 2nd year. He is playing like the late 1st round draft pick that he was.
Stokes was playing well in his 2nd year before he got hurt. He hasn't played at all yet this season.
Campbell is an all pro. He was playing well and will be back soon. And he was drafted in the 4th round, not the first.
Van Ness is a rookie behind Gary and Smith and a very deep OLB group - what do you expect of him that he hasn't done?
And yes, Savage is doing better this season, no one would be complaining if he was drafted in the 3rd round.
Smith is starting to age but he is still effective.

So who are these other "many other first rounders" who are under-achievers?

Once you are out of your 2nd contract it doesn’t matter if you are outplaying your draft pick. You need to play up to or outplay your contract. Clark hasn’t had a good year in a while. I suspect it either because they’ve moved him off the nose or because he plays too many snaps.

The Barry Disease. Tell Murphy to get Dr Fauci out of retirement to sterilize the place. Vaccines, boosters, whatever it takes! :rotf:

Flip these QBs to the other team[’s] roster and everyone is high on Love and ripping [Jared] Goff. What they’re both working with [offensively] is so obvious.

very lopsided team building imo, very good article.

To be fair we took Kevin King and Vince Biegel instead of TJ Watt. Two bums for the price of one. All hail Ted Thompson.
