He will be flying to GB for an exam/opinion from Dr Robert Anderson this week
If he wants to play for vet min, happy to have him !
IT. IS. TIME
I keep forgetting, and as I am seeing season predictions, it looks so weird to see 7 playoff teams in each conference.

As good as Watt is I don’t think I’d touch him. He’s still going to command double digits for a cap hit and he’s just not very reliable. His body is only going to fail more frequently as he’s ages.

Packer fans: we can't afford all these players! Rodgers' contract is ballooning, the Smiths' contracts are ballooning, Kenny Clark's contract is ballooning! Cap hell awaits! Hard choices must be made!
Also Packer fans: Hey, JJ Watt might come available for us!

Well it totally depends, if he has a good enough, healthy enough, year to warrant getting double digits, he'll probably still be in Houston. Until we resign Bak/King/Jones, we do have some money to spend. And the salary cap isn't going to stay as it is next year with teams like the Saints >80M over the cap. We'd be able to sign Clowny and Kamara for near the vet min, plus Watt, if they keep the cap there and don't spread it out.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑10 Sep 2020 08:33Packer fans: we can't afford all these players! If we are good this year and planning on bringing Aaron back again and we look like a borderline contender, Watt will absolutely want to play here.
Running backs getting paid...
The Vikes extend Dalvin Cook.
PFT:
The Vikes extend Dalvin Cook.
PFT:
The Saints extend Alvin KamaraFor Vikings running back Dalvin Cook, the bird in the hand was worth two in the bush. Primarily because it’s unclear whether two are even in the bush.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Vikings and running back Dalvin Cook have agreed to terms on a five-year extension.
NFL Media supplements our report with some basic numbers. The deal has a base value of $63 million, which equates to a new-money average of $12.3 million. Cook also has more than $28 million in injury guarantees at signing.
The deal is far better than Cook’s alternative. He would have rolled the dice for only $1.3 million this year, despite playing one of the most physically demanding positions in football. And if he’d made it through the season unscathed, the Vikings could have franchise-tagged him at an amount that has been dropping (due to the running back market) and will be in the range of $8.3 million if the cap craters to the agreed minimum of $175 million in 2021, due to the pandemic.
So taking the deal — which pays him above what he would have made over the next three years under the tag route — made a ton of sense for Cook, especially since the Vikings typically don’t pay players over the tag formula on a long-term deal.
Cook now has security and certainty, and the Vikings have under contract for six seasons one of the better running backs in the NFL, when healthy.
“When healthy” also was a big part of this decision. Cook has had an injury in every year of his career, starting with an ACL tear as a rookie. He knows what can happen without financial security, because he’s had it happen. Now, he has the security that, if he suffers another serious injury in 2020, he may have never had.
Per a league source, the Saints and running back Alvin Kamara have reached agreement on a five-year, $75 million extension. The deal includes $34.333 million in injury guarantees. Of that amount, more than $30 million is guaranteed for skill, injury, and cap at signing.
The contracts was reached just four days before the start of the regular season, with the Saints hosting the Buccaneers.
The new-money average of $15 million on Kamara’s contract ties him at No. 2 for all running backs, behind Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey at $16 million per year and even with Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.
Kamara also gets a $15 million signing bonus, all of which will be paid out in 2020. McCaffrey receives $7.5 million of his signing bonus in 2020, another $7.5 million in 2021, and the balance in 2022.
Kamara’s cash flow through two years is $27.2 million, just behind Bengals running back Joe Mixon’s $27.517 million but in excess of Titans running back Derrick Henry’s $25.5 million.
Over three years, Kamara gets $38.2 million, Mixon gets $37.616 million, and Henry receives $37.5 million.
And, with that, the door is pretty much slammed shut on re-signing Jones.

How can the Saints even do that?

From my standpoint yes. Aaron Jones is now too expensive.
But you talk to Aaron Jones, and he has been very open that his agent and the Packers are talking and close to a deal.
You just really never hear that from players. And he has said it multiple times.

I’m a little confused on this as well. Right now the Saints have an incredible healthy cap with only Brees costing more than 10mil against the cap. Next year however all their contracts balloon pretty significantly. I’ve gotta think this is Brees last season there with Taysum Hill costing them 16 mil against the cap in 2021 but who knows.

I'd love to have Jones back, but all one needed to have done was watch Edwards-Helaire last Thursday. Shows you right there why it's not a great idea to give big money to RB's.
Check this out though:
2017 Class
Aaron Jones
Leonard Fournette
Christian McCaffrey
Dalvin Cook
Joe Mixon
Alvin Kamara
Kareem Hunt
James Conner
Tarik Cohen
Wayne Gallman
Marlon Mack
Chris Carson
Undrafted:
Matt Breida
Austin Ekeler
Corey Clement
Best RB group ever?

2017 was a very good year for RBs for sure.
I wonder if it is also a league thing of how they are utilizing the RB position.
As for Aaron Jones, the other thing that will really impact Aaron Jones is how successful Jamaal Williams is this year.
Honestly, if Williams is the player the Packers think he can be, Rodgers has done nothing but praise, that will lower Jones's value. Everyone keeps saying Jamaal Williams is a half step quicker than last year. And I honestly thought Williams improved last year over his Year 2.

He is (Williams), however a lot would say Dillon has a very similar skill set. There's definitely room on the roster for him this go around, but pending on Dillon's production and outlook going into next year.... Williams and Jones both could be gone. Expect us to take another RB next year.go pak go wrote: ↑12 Sep 2020 14:262017 was a very good year for RBs for sure.

I said after the draft Williams would be the best of the three. I am obviously wrong on that call so far.
Still it is a mistake to sign RBs to big money. I have said it over and over. This is an easily replaceable position. In the salary cap era you need to steal positions from the cap. That’s why getting a QB on a rookie deal is massive because you can stack major deals on other important positions while most teams are paying 20% cap space m to their QB.
Singing Jones to a massive deal while drafting Dillon in the 2nd round would be a massive misplay by the front office. I think the Packers are negotiating with Jones agent with a very favorable contract that would make no sense for Jones. I’ve been saying all along if I was a betting man I would get Jones is gone because I have the confidence that at least Russ Ball has the big brain to know this is stupid. Gutey has done dumb &%$@ before ie: Jimmy Graham, Billy Turnstile, taking Alexander and Jackson with contradicting styles, and this past draft.

I could easily see keeping Williams on a Starksesque deal, and going with Dillon as the primary, Williams as the 3rd down back, and drafting a mid-late round guy that shows explosive ability to sprinkle into gadget roles right away like Ervin as well as replace some of the playmaking abvility lost with Jones, then absorb a larger role as time goes on. I think Williams and Dillon is a MUCH less explosive backfield, no matter what sort of "step" Williams takes, but it wouldn't be a weakness at all, either.
As for the Saints, I think they're securing their stars as best they can, going all-in for 2020 with Brees and then will do all sorts of restructures and cuts to get through a rough 2021 and do a mini-rebuild into whatever the next era is for the team with a strong base of well-paid stars.
They've never been timid about pushing cap battles into future years. My understanding is that the first year without Brees will carry a significant dead money hit for him. That's when they pay the piper and rebuild.
