From Lambeau to Lombardi, Holmgren, McCarthy and LaFleur and from Starr to Favre, Rodgers and now Jordan Love we’re talking Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers football. This Packers Forum is the place to talk NFL football and everything Packers. So, pull up a keyboard, make yourself at home and let’s talk some Packers football.
Lots of chatter that the defensive approach in game 1 was to limit Hurts' running and force him to beat the Pack by throwing from the pocket.
GB indeed limited Hurts to 33 yards on 13 carries, so he certainly did not run wild like he did in the game in Philly back in 2022.
However, the Eagles also put up 34 points (only 2 teams scored more in week 1), so it is difficult to call the approach a success.
Wonder if Halfley will employ the same "contain the running QB" strategy against another mobile QB this weekend in Richardson or whether we see something different?
I hope so, the plan was sound, the footing wasn't, poor field hurt both defenses, both defenses looked slow, if your a tad small with DL as we are, then poor footing will make you smaller, and thats what I think we saw defending the run, the Eagles OL pushed our DL around, and our ILB's lost footing trying to change direction, Barclay broke a few big runs because of it, to me, poor footing made our defense look worse then I think it is, same is true for Philly.
The playing surface at Arena Corintheans is "GrassMaster" which is a combination of perinneal rye grass and artificial fibers. Very common for Soccer field turf apparrently.
There are also two stadiums in the NFL with this EXACT SAME field turf:
Lambeau Field
Lincoln Financial Stadium
The slipping issues makes zero sense. The only two teams in the NFL who uses the same surface as Brazil and both had slipping issues. The only thing I can think of is the humidity level approached 90%. You don't see that level of humidity at Lambeau in the autumn and winter months.

Yes, that type of turf is very common in soccer. But in soccer the turf is also kept long. It appeared to be quite long on the tv. If you have ever been on Lambeau, the turf is rather short. I think the length and humidity were both factors. It was a bad, bad look for the NFL.

This is where vets like McKinney and Alexander have to step up...

It's more than just what the surface is made out of. It's how the surface is maintained. Should the root system be shallow, it wouldn't be conducive to high speed cutting of bigger humans. If the length is wrong it can also lead to more slipping.

I'm unclear of the point you're trying to make here.
Ok, so the physical makeup of the turf is the same, or similar, to that of both respective home fields. That doesn't change the fact the surface at Corintheans was clearly slick. Are you suggesting it wasn't? Or that both teams should have been better prepared for a field they had never actually stepped foot upon?
It just sounds like you're being dismissive of what was clearly evident. Something was clearly off. Players from both teams were slipping all over the place.
Now, whether I'm willing to attribute the entire poor defensive showing to the slick field conditions is another thing entirely.

so every field with grass master will play the same? it's poured at Lambeau and players had better footing, and players from both teams had traction problems after multiple cleat changes on that field, that wasn't a humidity issue, thats was a shallow root issue, players were digging up roots, come on. do you have to automatically disagree with every comment I make?

Yeah my point was prep. If there were any teams who should have adjusted it should have been GB and PHI. Surprised it got them so bad.
The length of the leaf and depth of the root does add clarification to my confusion. Also feel like Philly looked shocked by it more earlier in the game but adjusted better to it as the game went on.
I blame everything bad that happened on Brazil. Including poor defensive play. I saw defenders slip alot. Crazy to think just because the field is the same type as lambeau, that it would be the exact same in a different continent lol
I will be a tough judge this week tho. total pass on all fronts for week 1.

They made a point on the broadcast that the high humidity was likely a cause for the unusually slick surface.

one of the worst takes i have ever read on this forum. I assume you are suffering from lack of sleep due to new baby, and I would like to suggest a nap. Drs Orders.

didn't hear that, but we've seen our players have better footing in torrential down pours, so I have a hard time thinking it was just humidity,.
they had just played soccer on it 5 days prior, the grass was long, it came out and the roots were short, that was also talked about.
thing is the field was set up poorly for NFL football, when footing is bad, players are tentative, easier for injuries, I bet we had a dozen missed tackles as a result of poor footing.

This is what it comes down to. It was a soccer field set up for soccer. Long grass, and shallow roots due to it being late winter there. I would be interested to know the density of the turf as well as compared to Lambeau or Pitt or Philly.

could be it isn't as dense as the field at Lambeau, that would explain the small chunks ripping up when the players switched to the longer cleats, JJ's comment here seem to lean that way, and if it's as common as he says internationally, then the teams need to be better prepared
Former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt even joined in on the conversation to offer a player’s perspective.
“Soccer fields are made for speed and agility. Smaller bodies gliding across the surface with minimal contact,” he wrote in a post on X. “They are not properly conditioned to have the size & strength of NFL players cutting, pushing and driving all game on them. This is common at international games.”
I really question LaFleur’s ability to manage a game. Going for 2 early and then kicking a field goal in the 4th quarter. If it were just this game, I’d disagree with his decisions and then I’d be ok with it. However, he hasn’t improved over the years in my eyes.
I had no qualms with his decision to go for two early. The Packers were in a position to make up the 1 pt score offset after the Eagles were penalized on the extra point try. It was one yard to gain. I don't care it it's the 1st qtr, I'd expect the decision to be to take advantage of the penalty gift. The fact the Packers couldn't gain 1 yd should be your complaint, not MLFs decision to try it.
I would never go for 2 early in a game. Every point counts and you might need that point at the end. It can also affect your decision making at the end of the game. It’s not like the Packers are great at converting.
The penalty doesn’t make that much different unless you run the ball and the Packers at that point in the game had little success running the ball.
I want to gripe about 140+ yards rushing given up.
Then, I also want to remember:
1. Week 1
2. Playing a good offense
3. Still containing a great scrambling QB (mostly)
4. Team looks sloppy overall
5. Elite RB
Conclusion? I really don't know what to say. It wasn't adequate. Everybody would say so. But I'll defer to the rest of September for now and look at the larger body of work.
traction, poor footing, leads to poor tackling, Scott if ya can re watch, you will see players lose footing and even fall down trying to react to change of direction runs, Walker, Cooper, Alexander, most of our players in fact at one time or another could only reach tackle because there feet where churning up tundra.
Yoop, I wasn't talking about poor tackling. They looked sloppy overall. And frankly, they played on the same turf as the Eagles. So no pass on that.
Come on down and try some of our delicious green chili! Best in the world!
It’s pretty apparent the field was not set up for 200-300+ lb men manhandling each other.
Let's see if the league fines him for speaking the truth.
Too bad the truth is also that this is a guy who just signed a $64M extension and then played, on the same field as the other guys, like it should have been for 64 dollars.
