Gonna be up to Gary, LVN, and Enagbare to prove it. The defense hinges on 1 to f them being great and at least one other being good.RingoCStarrQB wrote: ↑09 Nov 2024 19:53The Packers D has plenty of games on the 2024 schedule to become the premier defense in the NFL. Packers fans saw the sack totals from the Pats-bears game...and are thinking the same better happen this Sunday.
My guess is they will be disappointed
With a new OC and all the turmoil, its back to fundamentals. I expect a steady diet of super quick throws, getting the ball out of Caleb's hands.
And IF that is their strategy, then the sack numbers will likely be less than what took place last weekend.
Quick throws put more pressure on the DBs to tackle. The flip side is that the bears will have to matriculate down the field 3 yards at a time and the likelihood of a penalties, missed assignments, mistakes grow with each snap. As noted by others, Packers need to get a decent lead early and kick them out of whatever plan they had
Gonna be interesting to see how CHI responds and even more interesting to see how Hafley chooses to attack.
Stuff the run and make Caleb beat ya ? With Williams and Jaire back, the secondary is back to being fully staffed

While Cox has been a healthy inactive for all nine games this season, he has been seen at practice by defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
“I think there’s a string of two practices where Cox, I just thought he looked like he was ready to go,” Hafley said on Thursday, a few days before the Packers will play at the Chicago Bears.
“(It’s) really cool to see when guys earn their opportunity, and I think he’s a really good example of that. And I am really, really excited for him along with (Arron) Mosby.”

Hafley has shown an ability to scheme to defend that much better than the previous regimes. I watched a lot of that Pats-Bears game. A lot of it was coverage sacks. Williams not knowing where to go with the ball and trying to extend plays led to sacks. I actually felt sorry for the OL because they held up fine.

Pack is facing an offense that has been struggling mightily, both on and off the field.
GB is also very healthy and is coming off a bye.
No reason not to expect the defense to hold the Bears to 17 or fewer points.

right, their OL may be part of the problem, but they're not far behind us for PBWR, but they are 5th in the league for RBWR.NCF wrote: ↑15 Nov 2024 08:56Hafley has shown an ability to scheme to defend that much better than the previous regimes. so we need to play stout against the run, Williams will struggle even against our 4 man rush, and crumble against our deceptive 5 man groupings, so we need to bring that heat against the pass and play gap control when they run.
the Bears tend to play us tough as a division foe even when they lose, but they seem severely mismatched against us this year.
27-9, all we give them are 3 FG's

So if I'm understanding that correctly, they're going off week one data only. It might be helpful to find an article that includes the other 9 weeks that are in the books.Let’s look at offensive line pass block and run block win rate rankings heading into Week 2.
awe shucks, I saw Nov. 10 and thought it was current, I went looking and the only site it seems that does the win rate analysis is Sharps, and it's a pay site, maybe BSA or another has better info.APB wrote: ↑15 Nov 2024 10:07From the article you linked:Yoop wrote: ↑15 Nov 2024 09:47right, their OL may be part of the problem, but they're not far behind us for PBWR, but they are 5th in the league for RBWR.NCF wrote: ↑15 Nov 2024 08:56

Watching a bad Bears' offense that had been struggling mightily and was down a lineman or two put up over 390 yards, a 179 yards on the ground, and go 12-19 on 3rd and 4th down was a revelation, and not a good one.
After firing its Offensive Coordinator and with all the drama going on in Chicago, I fully expected a mostly healthy Packer defense coming off a bye to shut down the Bears. That did not happen. (Jaire's latest, mysterious absence certainly did not help).
I keep having even my modest expectations for this Green Bay defense shattered. That is on me.
What happened to the idea that Packer lineman were going to tackle running backs on the way to sacking the QB under Jeff Hafley?
Yesterday's defense looked so much like the bend but don't break and hope the other team makes a mistake of past years and I guess that "succeeded" when Brooks blocked the FG for the win.
But the defense has been disappointing once again in 2024 and I don't think the blame goes to new DC.

Not going to overreact because of 1 game. We held an NFL team to 19 points, who were also aided by a ridiculous Unnecessary Roughness call as well as maybe the worst missed False Start Call I've ever seen (and another not so obvious one). And we played most of the game without one of the best CB's in football.
With that said, I do think think Year 2 of this defense is what we should be excited for, and hopefully we make the personnel changes to put the right players in this defense next year.

Unfortunately, it’s becoming obvious that without causing turnovers, this defense is average at best. The lack of pressure from the DL is a big problem. The team needs to find a way to get some pressure on 5he QB, because the secondary is just not good enough to be effective without it. The LBs are also average at best and Quay seems miscast as a MLB.
according to Brady ( who is a lot better game analyst than folks give him credit for) the Chicago OL was healthy with all 5 starters .LombardiTime wrote: ↑18 Nov 2024 09:49Watching a bad Bears' offense that had been struggling mightily and was down a lineman or two put up over 390 yards, a 179 yards on the ground, and go 12-19 on 3rd and 4th down was a revelation, and not a good one.

tackling RB, on there way to the QB? these are two completely different tasks.
we only played prevent style defense twice to my knowledge???? we won once and it almost cost us the game on the other.
I think, minus some lousy tackling our run defense numbers have improved, we still struggle against RPO QB's but then who doesn't
We need some better CB's to complement Alexander, all of Nixon, Valentine, and Stokes are no better than backup players, and get burnt in coverage every week.

At the risk of bringing facts into a discussion that will undoubtedly devolve into a fact-free discourse, I'm pretty sure Bears starting OG Teven Jenkins did not play yesterday.Yoop wrote: ↑18 Nov 2024 10:18according to Brady ( who is a lot better game analyst than folks give him credit for) the Chicago OL was healthy with all 5 starters .LombardiTime wrote: ↑18 Nov 2024 09:49Watching a bad Bears' offense that had been struggling mightily and was down a lineman or two put up over 390 yards, a 179 yards on the ground, and go 12-19 on 3rd and 4th down was a revelation, and not a good one.

I am also pretty sure that Bears OG Ryan Bates, who started in place of Jenkins, went down very early in the game with a concussion.
I look forward to the DVOA take on yesterday's game, because I think it was, considering the competition, perhaps GB's worst defensive performance of the season.

Just really gross LBer play.

With a 7-4 record now, it might not be too early to identify if some of our defenders are not the ideal fits for Hafley's scheme. It's easy to pick on the ones who are not meeting expectations. But can we discuss this for the remainder of the season and see what turns up?
I'm picking the following as under-performing:
1. Kenny Clark. Yeah, he's eating blocks but it seems like he isn't pushing the OLine back as much as he should.
2. Quay. For reasons that others have noted. He does still flash greatness on some pass defense. He has moment on blitzes too. But he needs more. Seems like he picks the wrong holes to fill against the run more often than not.
3. Stokes. Yeah, he's fast. What else is he?
4. LVN. Still waiting for him to make some impact.
I do think we have our share of JAGs too. Surprising since we've spent so much draft capitol there. McDuffie, Wilson, Nixon, etc. I love those guys for effort. But they aren't special.

we held a inspired Bears team to 19 points.
I think Refs could call LVN for neutral zone infraction on almost every snap he takes, every time the camera give a line view pre snap his lead foot is even with the ball, obviously some of what I see could be camera angle that deceives my view, still he's pushing the envelope to the breaking point.Scott4Pack wrote: ↑18 Nov 2024 11:45With a 7-4 record now, it might not be too early to identify if some of our defenders are not the ideal fits for Hafley's scheme.
