McCarthy to Chicago makes a ton of sense, actually. He's one of those steadying ships who can work with Caleb and improve his process, get the team headed in the right direction, establish a culture, and then probably move on. But a team like Chicago can take a limited ceiling for a franchise reset
It actually makes no sense. He is a stop gap. They already started the process of ruining Williams' career by hanging on to Eberflus a year too long. Hiring McCarthy would be the most Bears thing ever and they will be looking for another coach in 2-3 years with Williams career in the balance.

What they should do and what they need to do is hire a young, bright offensive-minded coach that will be there for the long haul. Someone perhaps a little wet behind the ears, but someone that he and Williams will go through it all together. I hope they are too shortsighted to see this, but I think they might actually get this one right.

Like Matt Nagy, right?

I actually thought about him and meant to add the disclaimer about hiring "the right person". You knew Nagy was a dbag from the very start and Turd Biscuit was a bust. It doesn't mean the process was wrong, it means they drafted the wrong QB and hired a young, bright offensive coach who checked some one the boxes, but not all of them.

Isn't this coming from the guy who said Alex McGough winning the backup QB job was a lock?

McCarthy is my home boy. I love, love, love Mike McCarthy. I just don't want to see his reputation get even worse and go to Chicago.

I agree. This is no slam on McCarthy. It's just a no-win situation for him or the Bears.

Agreed. I will also state that I don't believe Mike McCarthy has the same impact as a coach as he did 10 - 15 years ago. I believe the game has passed by him and frankly I question if players buy into his leadership compared to 15 years ago.

Mike McCarthy 2006 - 2014 was simply incredible. He is not that same guy now.

MM just came off of 3 consecutive 12-win seasons and then went 4-4 this year with Cooper Rush at QB.

He is still a guy who gives you a high floor and a cultural revamp. I agree that he's a 2-5 year solution and not a "career with Caleb" answer, but they absolutely CAN'T hire a flop for Williams. I agree that the Bears needed to move on from Eberflus and get someone who can develop Caleb last year, but they didn't. Years two and three will determine if Williams is a bust, and they need someone who can establish the right path or direction.

This is like Ron Rivera in Washington. He wasn't the long-term answer, but the culture had fallen apart and they just needed an established candidate to come in and turn the ship around. Once it's turned, they can worry about the right person to drive it. But you can't take a chance on an unknown.

For instance, Ben Johnson is rumored to have been unimpressive in interviews. There is a fear he's a great coordinator but not a great HC. If he's their guy, they're running the risk of Nagy or Kingsbury (both of whom are getting HC buzz again this cycle). So who's your guy?

Mike McCarthy was hired for and thrived in the pre-2011 CBA. He was still good after that, but his style was conducive to full-time, hands-on.

If I were the Bears and for some reason I'm not hiring Ben Johnson then I go Kingsbury. We already got the bad HC season growing pains out of the way, lots of guys have that but then do better on their second try, and he knows how to run an offense that suits their QB, just get a good DC to go with him. Frankly it was a major blunder by CHI not hiring him to be their OC.

We haven't seen Mac develop a good QB without Clements, and I'm skeptical that he can do it in a league where he can't do his QB School. I don't think he's the right guy for the job. He's a better coach than I gave him credit for but CHI isn't the place for him. Jacksonville would be a good landing spot but I think that's probably where Johnson goes.

I think MM is actually a really good HC. I think he isnt a very good offensive mind. When hes left just to coach the team he normally does quite well. Once he has to start calling plays and scheming his offenses look bad because theyre simple and dont include the concepts a lot of the younger coaches are using that get defenses guessing at all the moving parts and trickery.

Hes the opposite of Lafluer. Lafleur has drawn up some damn creative plays and schemes and typically outside of this season running that garbage WR jet on critical downs he calls a good game too. But I dont think Lafleur coaches a very disciplined or detailed team.

Mike Tomlin versus Mike Shanahan, one a steady Eddie diet of basic football, the other all the gadgetry a person can create

Chicago has a new GM and Ceo/president, a old school coach like McCarthy would add stability, and he's only 60, Williams could retire under McCarthy :idn:

Tom Flores left in '87 and they haven't had a coach stay more than 5 years (not including interim) since. The next guy will be their 15th coach in that time frame.

Are you saying Williams will be washed up in 3 years in MM's regime?

He's also still suing the NFL. I really hope he can get hired out of the division but luck might not be on our side for that.

Raiders might be dumb/crazy enough to do it, though.

A real bummer for Watson, and for the Packers. That said, I respectfully think your post is beyond ridiculous.

Why? What was the inevitable result of playing a WR coming off a knee injury with a brace on 1 knee in a meaningless game. Not only a WR, the 1 unstoppable WR the Packers have, the only one who cannot be guarded and makes every other WR better by drawing the double.

Total stupidity should have consequences, right? Can you think of any other description for the decision to play Watson, other than total stupidity? Why is it ridiculous to hold people responsible for their decisions?

The knee injury was a bruise, no structural damage whatsoever. It had nothing to do with the ACL injury to the other knee. Of all the issues with the coaching in that game, playing Watson was not one that I blame MLF for.

So you think resting a bruise on the opposite leg of all things an additional 7 days would have saved the ACL?

Come on dude. This is just a convinient connection you are trying to make here.

One thing I often wonder about stupid people:

Do they know they're stupid, or does their idiocy shield them from that reality ?
