Speaking of game planning against an opponent, I don't think it was coincidence that the Jaguars ran right at Preston Smith. If that doesn't show the defensive coaches that Smith is a liability, nothing will. Either he needs to be kicked in that ass or sit his ass on the bench.
Palmy - "Very few have the ability to truly excel regardless of system. For many the system is the difference between being just a guy or an NFL starter. Fact is, everyone is talented at this level."
If Lowry or Lancaster are better match ups, and they still get steamrolled, then they got no chance in the playoffs.BSA wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 11:09I don't think you can say that with such certainty. MLF has talked about Montravious and commented on a few things
1) lack of consistency. He doesn't bring it every down
2) unsure about his assignments
3) does his job in beating his guy, but doesn't find the ball
4) He struggles handling double teams
DCs and OCs game plan specifically for each opponent and there may be attributes where Lowry or Lancaster are a better match up vs some OL while Adams is a better match-up in others.
As for ' lack of consistency " how does that not apply to Savage?
Doesn't bring it every down, Check
Unsure about his assignments, Check
Doesn't find the ball, Check
Struggles covering receiver's, Double check.
It would be nice if somebody started to call him out for his bad play.
Yeah I don't get why Gary isn't taking more of a load of the snaps to be honest. Preston plays a lot and he is just not earning those reps. Gary plays half the reps and makes twice the plays.Pckfn23 wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 11:11Speaking of game planning against an opponent, I don't think it was coincidence that the Jaguars ran right at Preston Smith. I am okay with the Packers moving on from Preston in 2021.
There was that one play early in the game where Smith completely rushed the passer and did a fantastic job of getting in the backfield....if it was a pass. Instead, Kingsley Keke is forced to hold up three gaps on his own and shocker, he couldn't do it to let Robinson whip on the outside for a big gain.
We save $8 million in 2021 and $16.5 million in 2022 if we cut him after this season. Gary can take over for Preston and Garvin/draft pick/Ramsey can take over that Gary role.
It really sucks because my goodness his first 8 games as a Packer were amazing.
I realize it's more than sacks, but looking at P Smith's history, he's had up and down numbers in that category. First year, 8 sacks.go pak go wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 11:20Yeah I don't get why Gary isn't taking more of a load of the snaps to be honest. Preston plays a lot and he is just not earning those reps. Next year, 4. Followed by 8, then 4 before coming to the Packers and getting 11 or 12, can't remember.
So now it's back to being a down year again.
The trend suggests he has a big year next season, If it comes with the Packers is another story.

Does anyone have the pressures and hurries and hits stats? It feels way down across the board for us, but I'd like to spot check that assumption with the numbers.
2020:
Preston Smith - 4 Hurries. 3 QB Hits. 1.5 Sacks. 9 Total Pressures.
Zadarius Smith - 6 Hurries. 5 QB Hits. 8 Sacks. 19 Total Pressures.
Rashan Gary - 2 Hurries. 3 QB Hits. 2.5 Sacks. 8 Total Pressures.
Total = 12 Hurries. 11 Hits. 12 Sacks. 36 Pressures.
2019: (after 9 games)
Preston Smith - 9 Hurries. 5 QB Hits. 8 Sacks. 22 Total Pressures.
Zadarius Smith - 7 Hurries. 8 QB Hits. 8.5 Sacks. 24 Total Pressures.
Rashan Gary - 1 Hurry. 1 QB Hit. 1 Sack. 3 Total Pressures.
Kyler Fackrell - 2 Hurries. 2 QB Hits. .5 Sack. 5 Total Pressures.
Total = 18 Hurries. 16 Hits. 18 Sacks. 54 Pressures.

S basically, Preston is operating at 40% of his 2019 rate, Z at 80% of his 2019, and Gary has increased his production but not nearly enough to compensate for the others' declines.
Take these with a grain of salt.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 12:20THANKSgo pak go wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 11:542020:

Take Rashan Gary for instance. Pro Football Reference is giving Gary no hurries. No hits. and 1 sack for 1 total pressure vs Jacksonville.
I guarantee you Gary was waaaay more impactful then that. I can count at the least 3 hurries that they are not crediting him in the 2nd half vs Jacksonville.
thanks, our pressures are down a 1/3rd, we all love the hits and sacks, but hurries are often just as affective, we got a pick Sunday due to a hurry, just making the QB re set and possibly move to another receiver is a successful pass rush to me.go pak go wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 11:542020:

I think some saw this coming, Gary would over take P. Smith, imo it's obvious he's much more athletic, has better feet and really just needed some coaching up and increased strength, it showed Sunday, and Prestine at times just looks weak, can't shed a block, I forget, I think it was the Bucs game, he was dominated for most of the game by a TE, I told my brother we should try and sign that TE lol, so ya, I would give Prestines money to resign Jones, orrrrr, I'd use it on a big DT
I remember reading that Z. Smith had somewhere in the neighborhood of 120 total pressures last year, I know there is a wide range when doing these pressure states, but these are so much different then I remember, I think my source last year was PFR and P.Smith was around 50 total, either way he hasn't looked anything like he did last season, neither does Z, Gary has made the leap.

I mean, I think a lot of people expected some regression to the mean, which is what looks to be happening with Z... but Preston has regressed past the mean. I know his sack production was uneven in his first four years, but my recollection was that his pressure numbers were more steady, so it's disappointing to see that's very much not the case this year; matches the eye test, though.
he does this stuff a couple times a game, it's as though he is totally oblivious of what happens post snap.go pak go wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 11:20here was that one play early in the game where Smith completely rushed the passer and did a fantastic job of getting in the backfield....if it was a pass. Wait.
Our defense is top 10?
Yards/game, 9th in the NFL; right between the Ravens and the Bears.
I didn't see that comin'

Despite the top 10 rating, I noticed that the Packers D gives up about 110 yards rushing per game. Only 4 interceptions so far. 20 sacks so far. Not all that sparkling for a #1 seeded team. Let's see how things go against the Colts.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 17:24Wait.

GO PACKERS
Didn’t Gary have a sack and a pressure on consecutive plays during the Jaguars final drive alone?go pak go wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 13:10Take these with a grain of salt.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 12:20THANKSgo pak go wrote: ↑17 Nov 2020 11:542020:

Sack, pressure, pressure on the last 3 defensive plays.
The 3rd down play was essentially his sack too, but got no help, Preston ended up getting credit for the sack.
I mean look at the Twitter video in here’s Johnny. I don’t know how you can’t call that a pressure.

In the first half ? You betcha.
Packers defense is tied with Pittsburgh as a Top 5 defense in the 1st half of games
