What Are You Watching?

Cheesy topics (like the Cheese Curds thread) go here. Topics that aren't Packer related will be moved here as well.

Mmmm.... cheese.

- I went ***1/2 for Ozark. It's very good, but I stopped fearing for the main protagonist family. Took away the core of the tension. Shame. But overall high quality kept me watching.
I still feel tension quite often while watching. At any given moment, any one of them is a single slip-up away from being in a world of pain, and that keeps me on my toes despite the fact I know that the main characters (probably) have the usual Plot Armor.
Spoiler
Like when Marty was abducted by the Cartel... I knew in my head they would probably release him eventually, but I felt the uncertainty and suffering through his character and Wendy's throughout that ordeal.
Not to mention, there are a lot of other characters whose stories you can get invested in that are not similarly safe.
- The Witcher was disjointed, but surprisingly entertaining. It sort of worked even when it shouldn't have. **1/2 and "only recommended if you can give your brain a holiday".
"Disjointed" describes The Witcher perfectly. I actually liked it, but the pacing was just kinda ~off~ and took away from an otherwise fun and interesting story.

Exactly, like Westworld in that respect. Due to the story line, you end up understanding why. Don't want to give to much away.

- Dark. A rather aptly named time-travel mystery series that can take a couple of episodes to get you hooked, but if it does it won't let go. Great to see an original take on the time-travel theme. In German, but I think being in a foreign language only adds to the mystery in this case. ****
I rather enjoyed this, too. Took a few episodes to understand what the heck was happening, and there were still some confusing points along the way with all the reveals, but it kept you engaged and approached time travel from a whole new angle. Well worth watching.

I'll just say the Mandalorian is well worth watching, especially if you avoid all spoilers up to the end of season 2. No bantha bodo here.

It's essentially westerns and ooold Japanese samurai movies (that many westerns are based upon), but it's in the Star Wars setting. With very cool characters and that adventurous feel.

Star Wars fans will get extra feels. Anyone with an adventurous mind should enjoy it.

I feel like Ozark is more about keeping their &%$@ together to protect everyone else. With where everything stands right now, I feel like Ruth is the primary character and is really at the mercy of the Byrdes' not F'ing things up.

I just started X-Files on Hulu. My parents were always big into it and finally got around to seeing what the fuss was all about. Into Season 3. So far, so good. Very slow developing story so far, but seems more like each episode is pretty standalone. From what I understand, a lot of things start coming together as the series goes on into later years.
I was an avid fan, and thought the show was fantastic at the start, but got slowly diluted as it went on, because the studio wanted to milk it to the max instead of allowing for a logical ending. To their credit, they finally did offer a kind of an end, but it was after my enthusiasm was all spent. Too many filler episodes exhausted me.
I've been at the X Files for about 4yrs now and have finally made it to season 9. And I've been on that for about a year now. It's been a real struggle for the biggest reason:
Spoiler
No Mulder for the whole season, when Duchovny left for a bit
And I don't know WHAT, WHAT happened to the sound production. Or who was in charge of it. Season 9 on any format is almost unwatchable due to the loud footsteps of every single character. If you haven't noticed this in season 9, go back and watch the first couple of episodes. It drowns out dialogue and is entirely too distracting. :kaboom:
Almost to the end of Season 5. Do I need to watch the first X-Files movie in between Seasons 5 and 6 for continuity or is the movie pretty standalone?

There's an episode or two that will have a small reference to the movie, so you can definitely get by without it, but honestly it's pretty decent so I'd recommend it.

Got to the end of The Mandalorian season 2 last night
Spoiler
Luke’s appearance was kind of cool. Wasn’t expecting it. I’m a Star Wars fan but not rabid like some. I had been curious to the timeline setting of the Mandalorian series as compared to the movies. A young fully vested Jedi Luke kinda puts the series somewhere around the conclusion of Return of the Jedi. Now I wonder if the baby Yoda-like character will be incorporated into any future Star Wars movies since Yoda himself is gone.

Watched the new Doctor Who. I like Jodie, but she doesn't have the same caliber of writers as the previous doctors' had.

I mean... That was ending was quite something.

During Disney's time at the reigns, there have somehow allowed talent to do their own things, and been bold at what they allow. Like the fantastic Rogue One. Sometimes less successful, like Solo. Mandalorian's been a great series. The western theme was already genius, and then they just added a relatable story on top it.

Got Amazon Prime free for 6 months. Haven't had it for several years. So started watching Hanna. Not bad, not great. On season 2 episode 8. Going to start Jack Ryan in a few days.

Jack Ryan is good. It only loosely follows the character from the Clancy books but it is well produced with interesting storylines. I think you’ll like it.

Spoiler
The Mandalorian is set roughly five years after Return of the Jedi. Most logical story lines for Baby Yoda should end in tragedy considering the back story of Kylo Ren. The fact that the little guy was nowhere to be seen (or even mentioned by Luke) in the latest trilogy wouldn't make much sense if he was still around. I'll actually be impressed if Disney is willing to take the Baby Yoda story to its logical conclusion.

Im watching 6 freaking games of NFL wild card football next weekend.

I’m initially a big fan of the 7 team playoff.
