I dunno if there's special COVID rules this year, but last season teams were allowed to designate up to two players as post-June 1 cuts even if those players were released before June. But this may not work with Preston, since he's due a 4M roster bonus if not cut before 3rd day of league year. I'm sure articles about potential cuts will start dropping later this week.BF004 wrote: ↑26 Jan 2021 09:23I wonder if there would be a competent way to make Preston Smith a post-June 1st cut. Giving up $12 million in cap relief, $4 million dead cap in 2021 and 2022, rather than all $8 in 2021.
Pros
- Obvious additional $4 million in 2021 cap relief, $12 million in cap savings would pretty much make this a no brainer.
Cons
- Not really fair to Preston and not let him partake in the opening week of FA, don't want to get a bad reputation for dogging players like that.
- We would have to carry his full cap to June 1st, past free agency and make it, at least initially, to extend guys like Jones or Linsley
Wonder if there is some mechanism you can where like you give Linsley or Jones their contract, but with a 2022 signing bonus, that is fully guaranteed upon signing. So we could basically bring them back in 2021 for close to vet minimum, or whatever we want, then give them their big payday in 2022. Players will have to wait a full year to see that check, but they would see it regardless of injury or being released or whatever. Total kicking the can down the road, but find way to bring back Linsley and Jones.

I normally would not advocate for hiring this person, but I can think of one big-name D-Coord candidate who runs a virtually identical defense and has a tendency to field elite defenses in his first few seasons -- they tend to tail off pretty dramatically, but we only have another year left before the window shuts. And he's 58 to Wade's 73.

Pettine has to go.
King can stay if he is cheap, but that is unlikely
Preston is way overpaid.

Wasn't Pettine born of the Rex Ryan coaching tree? Is that a tree we want to keep barking up?Labrev wrote: ↑26 Jan 2021 11:29I normally would not advocate for hiring this person, but I can think of one big-name D-Coord candidate who runs a virtually identical defense and has a tendency to field elite defenses in his first few seasons -- they tend to tail off pretty dramatically, but we only have another year left before the window shuts. I'd go Wade over Ryan, but really don't want either TBH.
Mcgoos gotta go, or whatever the special teams guy is named. Bye.
Pettine can go if a big name is out there like a Bowles of another guy that wasn’t a good HC but needs a rebound dc job. I’m not in favor of cutting petting for Quinn. I think Quinn sucks, has a simple scheme, and relies too much on top talent. When he loses that, he sucks.
Petitne may be frustrating, but all season long that d did plenty for us to win in today’s NFL that is tilted to the O. I prolly would try to fire him, but only if I had a replacement already in mind I knew I could get.
Pettiness problem is def his low energy. He plays a style of d that actually supports our O. It’s very risk adverse so it can frustrate, but it results in FGs a lot. He’s not THAT bad.
The problem is he might as well be back in the booth bc you never see him coaching any body up or firing anyone up. Lafleur is so mello I would love a RARA dc that could like a fire under some of the guys a*****

Is he mellow though? He gets pretty animated sometimes, and I recall him getting in at least two heated interactions with Pettine.
With rah-rah coaches, I always think "be careful what you wish for". Lotta guys just tune that stuff out.

I'm thinking in the immediate short-term only, someone who can get results and fast.Captain_Ben wrote: ↑26 Jan 2021 15:53Wasn't Pettine born of the Rex Ryan coaching tree? Also, our window closes after next season, so we don't really have the luxury of installing some drastically different system if we are gunning for a Super Bowl next year, IMO.

If it's Rex Ryan then I thought about him too and would approve.Labrev wrote: ↑26 Jan 2021 11:29I normally would not advocate for hiring this person, but I can think of one big-name D-Coord candidate who runs a virtually identical defense and has a tendency to field elite defenses in his first few seasons -- they tend to tail off pretty dramatically, but we only have another year left before the window shuts. I feel like a lot of these guys get bad reputations due to their HC experience, but the fact is that they're elite DCs.
I don't think I have ever seen an article about anything that has reflected my views as much as this one does. I mean, he even uses the term "fireable offense" to refer to our DC, which is a term I have only heard me use (I'm sure others have used it, I just have not heard them). This might as well have been me writing this. In fact these are pretty much the exact arguments I've been making here

Goosebumps. This dude is the official Packers whisperer. The only problem: what if Wade does not want to come? Who else is there (and no, Rex Ryan - for me - is not a good option, he's too much charisma but too little content).
Is this guy well-known among Packers fans? I used to pay attention to other Packers sites, but I have pretty much gotten all my info from here for several years now. And PFT of courseGerman_Panzer wrote: ↑27 Jan 2021 08:34Goosebumps. This dude is the official Packers whisperer. The only problem: what if Wade does not want to come? Not sure if anyone mentioned this but you can’t fire Pettine. He’s not under contract.

right, it will fool other prespective employers if being fired from us is not on his resumelupedafiasco wrote: ↑28 Jan 2021 07:07Not sure if anyone mentioned this but you can’t fire Pettine. He’s not under contract.

again I can not in good faith endorse this draft, I need more better WR's at the top

Right he would have to be rehired. Thus far I haven't heard anything about GB trying to bring him back.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑28 Jan 2021 07:07Not sure if anyone mentioned this but you can’t fire Pettine. He’s not under contract.
I'm pretty sure he was "fired", even though that's not technically what happened.

Yeah I really just think LaFleur wants his own guy for better or for worse. Pettine was force on LaFleur. Give him the reigns of his own coaching staff. He’s certainly earned it.Waldo wrote: ↑28 Jan 2021 08:18Right he would have to be rehired. What is the Saleh tree like? Where did he learn? Can see MLF going in that direction.
