Aaron Jones Signs 4-year $48M Contract with Packers

Getting dancing bananas despite me generally hating paying RBs... Weird days...
12M per year for a RB would be . 12M per year for an offensive weapon .
Average per year is tied 6th among RBs, squarely in the 2nd tier of RBs (pretty fair). The 13M signing bonus is very low (27% of deal). He may have 1st and 2nd year salaries guaranteed, but I doubt that's the case (at least the 2nd year), since usually agents would leak the max amount of guarantees they could.
I bet the Packers could easily get outta the deal after year 2. Jones can't slack off to see the last years of it.
This deal would have 22nd highest average per year if Jones was listed as a WR. He's only just begun getting into the details of being split out wide.
Jones' development arc has been super impressive, and displays how good of a kid he is: Came outta college as a good runner, but just a runner. First worked on his rushing to become a great rusher in year 2. Then worked on his pass blocking to become a valid 3rd down option in year 3. Then expanded his horizons to enable being split out wide in year 4. What's next? Work on passing for trick plays?
4 for 48 with one year and change guaranteed, sounds like a team friendly deal to me, this is a excellent signing to me, huge production, and imo a lot we havn't tapped into as a receiver. I'am celebrating
I like the guy so much Im a little sad for him he only got 13m guranteed ha
Feel like he could have got more. Happy he made the right decision for himself tho, and that was staying with us.
He knows his body will take less of a beating than some other backs playing beside the bruiser AJ Dillon.

I Do Not Hate Matt Lafleur
Man, I’m torn on this.
I LOVE having Jones back in the fold. Great player and fantastic fit in this offense.
Unfortunately I had already resigned myself to accepting he was gone and looked forward to what a Williams/Dillon backfield could accomplish along with potentially bringing back Linsley or a upper tier defensive FA. A Williams resigning would have surely come much cheaper and I believe he and Dillon could have provided what the offense needed without the financial stress that accompanies the Jones resigning. Yeah, Jones has big play juice but I think the offense would have survived without him.
I guess I’ll reserve final judgment until the details come out but, as it stands, I just have the feeling those financial resources would’ve been better spent elsewhere. Oh well. Not terribly disappointed to see AJ back in the fold.

Pretty stoked about the offense the next 2 years. The Jones-Dillon combo will be the most feared rushing attack out there.
Can't believe they made it happen but I guess I shouldn't be, you don't let special leave the building.

And in classic Packer fashion, no real details out yet.
Was a good point about the franchise tags, Packers basically owned Jones for 2 years and 19 million. Has to figure that would be the base construct, then where do you go from there?
Get a minimal year one cap hit, have high base salaries in years 3 and 4, easily cuttable then.

I think you should happy. Especially when comparing to a Linsley signing.APB wrote: ↑14 Mar 2021 20:43Man, I’m torn on this.

The difference between Jones over Williams (especially when we have Dillon) and Linsley over Jenkins is a huge win for us. Jones over Williams is definitely adventagous.
Our IOL should in theory be ready for Linsley leaving. But Jones is a clear upgrade over Williams.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. On one hand Jones absolutely makes this team better and he deserved the money, if not more in a better year. On the other hand In recent memory that I can recall the only RB deals that didn’t immediately flop are Henry, Cook, and Kamala.
Zeke seemingly lost motivation. Bell released. Gurley released. Freeman released. David Johnson released. Mixon hurt. CMC hurt.
Now essentially the first four rounds of last years draft are bench players for the foreseeable future.
Great for Jones though. Well deserved and happy to have him for the long haul. Hopefully the guy can get us a ring.

Great fit, Jones gives huge production, no one would bat a eye lash if this was a 1500 yard receiver, Lafluer wants to run the ball, wants to run off tackle, who better to do that with then a guy like Jones, good thing we didn't let him hit FA, his priced would have jumped a couple mil.
Don't be fooled, we practically did let him hit FA. After all the obvious tampering and this deal taking up to the last day before UFA, Jones and his agent (& the Packers) had a crystal clear picture of his market price. I'd imagine Jones' side was somewhat disappointed that there wasn't a great bidding war, but the Packers are a SB contender, great scheme fit for Jones, and known for keeping deserving players to the end of their deals.Yoop wrote: ↑14 Mar 2021 22:54Great fit, Jones gives huge production, no one would bat a eye lash if this was a 1500 yard receiver, Lafluer wants to run the ball, wants to run off tackle, who better to do that with then a guy like Jones, good thing we didn't let him hit FA, his priced would have jumped a couple mil.
I definitely agree that Jones is "more than just a RB". He enables unusual scheme versatility, and causes opponents to take time prepping for him being split wide. I sort of expect LaFleur to coach him up for some slot WR things this season. Then he could line up everywhere but the TE :D

I do agree. I do think what Jones and Rosenhaus were expecting a little more interest from teams like Miami or another team in need of a RB with cap space. I never thought Miami would pay big dollars to a back. They seem to be really well run currently nailing the rebuild process. It wouldnt make sense for them to be going in on a back when theyve got stars to pay and a surplus of picks where they can afford to go back early in the draft for cheap and have that long term.salmar80 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021 00:15Don't be fooled, we practically did let him hit FA. I do think it’s reasonable to believe Rosenhaus that Jones WANTED to remain in GB. Yeah, he would’ve given thought to other offers. But he knows that he’s best off with AR12 and MLF. He fits here and he knows it.
Kudos to the UTEP kid and military son! Looking forward to many great days ahead.

I wasn't fooled Salmar, I believed Rosenhaus when he said Jones took a home town discount, and accepted a lesser contract to stay here, 12 mil. was cheap for Jones.salmar80 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021 00:15Don't be fooled, we practically did let him hit FA. But if you want to know what he meant to the NFL’s top-scoring offense in 2020, look no further than the Packers’ home loss to Minnesota last season in Week 8, one of two games Jones missed last season because of a calf injury. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer normally doesn’t play much two-deep safeties, but with Jones on the sidelines, that’s what he did while holding the Packers to 22 points, almost 10 points below their 31.8 average for the season.
“Their plan was very simple,” Rodgers said after that game. “They played Cover-2, which is not really in (Zimmer’s) scheme over the years, so many plays today. They didn’t want to leave Davante (Adams) one-on-one; I think the one time they did, I threw a touchdown the first drive of the game, and that was about it.”
Zimmer was OK with an alternate plan because he didn’t have to worry about Jones. There might be a lot of decent backs in this league but not many change defensive game plans. Jones does. He stresses defenses because he’s capable of ripping off a big run any time he touches the ball and is good enough in the passing game to split out as a receiver too.

I don't think people fully realize the value Jones brings to this offense, thats why all the hand ringing over paying him, and this seems to be a easy out after 2 years, anyone that doesn't think Jones is worth 2 for 24 mil. has a screw lose.

This is the part of your post that is wrong. It just is. It is wrong and this is the part Salmar was talking when saying, "don't be fooled". But you do a great job of pivoting the conservation immediately to the value then that Jones brings going away from actual point of this conversation between you and Salmar while establishing you aren't fooled with your defense being that everyone else is crazy to not think Aaron Jones provides a lot of value to the Packers.
Salmar is correct. Don't be fooled. Your statement of the Packers not letting Jones hit FA is absolutely incorrect. We absolutely, 100% allowed Aaron Jones to hit FA. We did it as a courtesy thing. We didn't force Aaron Jones to not hit Free Agency. That sort of move would have had us Tagging him.
No Aaron Jones absolutely had the ability to to hit FA. We didn't blow his doors off with an above market offer that didn't allow him to see what else was out there. This entire decision to stay in Green Bay on a relatively modest deal was all the decision of Aaron Jones.
your just twisting words now GPG, FA starts Wednesday, Jones and Rosenhaus heard offers, but never stuck there foot in the water because Jones wanted to remain a Packer, thats Jones taking a lesser contract for the familiararity of scheme and team mates over ???? Dollars more on the market.
we didn't tag him because players resent being tagged, it robs them of money and the possible future should they be hurt, and sends a poor picture of how our FO operates.
I was not fooled a bit that teams talk privately prior to FA, heck the best of the best are signed up ten minutes after FA starts, this isn't my first tetter totter ride bro.

Free agency is close enough that Jones knew what his market was.
Green Bay does offer Jones the best chance of getting a GOOD 3rd contract. Not necessarily here, but he knows we have 1B here to compliment him and keep his workload out of the stratosphere, and key players to top teams tend to have a lot of value elsewhere. He probably also knows that career longevity is in his hands, and MLF/AR know how to use them better than pretty much anywhere else.

This statement is what Salmar was talking about. We didn't NOT let Aaron Jones hit the FA to prevent his price tag going up a couple million. If that was the case, then Rosenhause is the worst agent ever and Jones is stupid.
Jones took what he saw was in the ballpark of his market value in 2021 and likely took a discount because he loved being a Packer. It was nothing to do with the Packers not letting him hit FA.
If anything, we let him hit FA and allowed Aaron Jones to make the decision for himself and he chose the Packers and that's awesome because now we have a happy RB and keep our reputation as an organization a solid one by not tagging players and keeping them hostage.
I don't think Packers fans could have asked for much better of an outcome.
OK then I guess I should have said it's a good thing we where able to sign him prior to FA so we didn't get caught up with a bidding war, if we weren't worried that Jones would get away as the offers went higher then we would have let him test the market and matched the offers, we didn't because the outside money was likely to go up.go pak go wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021 08:20Literally no twisting of word here.Yoop wrote: ↑15 Mar 2021 07:49your just twisting words now GPG, FA starts Wednesday, Jones and Rosenhaus heard offers, but never stuck there foot in the water because Jones wanted to remain a Packer, thats Jones taking a lesser contract for the familiararity of scheme and team mates over ???? and your wrong again, we did not let him hit FA, this is becoming beyond ignorant now, here is what you/we dont know, How much was our original offer to Jones, and when did it become 12 mil. annual with 13 mil guaranteed, I'd think it was shortly after we realized he was being offered that and more from other teams, that he decided to take our final offer is Jones doing both himself and the team a smart and team friendly deal.
I am on board with almost every word of this today, start to finish. Very glad to have Jones back and this does nothing to temper my excitement for AJ Dillon going forward.
