I want to see the full details. Is this really a one-year deal dressed as two or is it really a 2-year deal. If the latter, I can understand any frustration with this signing, but I am thinking this is more of another 1-year deal with some dead cap.
Exactly. The devil is in the details. I'd be shocked if it was anything other than a near clean walk after 1 year.
It doesn't really matter. We are out minimum $4 million on this contract. That is a lot of money.

Not necessarily. If it's $2.1 million, then we are out, at minimum, that plus the veteran minimum of $1.075 million or in total $3.175 million, should he make the roster. If it is a guaranteed $4 million, we are out $5.075 million, should he make the roster. If the $2.1 million is a signing bonus then his salary cap hit in 2021 could be as low as $2.125 million.

meh. I mean I am genuinely glad we are keeping a dominant blocker at the position around, not to mention leadership, but I am not real jazzed about the price-point. And it is going to hurt to end up cutting someone for him.

I wonder how much this all impacts whether we go TE in the draft at all this year? Bob tendered. Lewis on a 2 year. My guess is we stick with what we have, Jace included. I honestly thought we'd go younger here.
Other than this guy, we have a 4th year player, a 3rd year player, and a 2nd year player on the roster. Why would we "go younger" at the position?

I think they'll probably keep a blocking TE on the PS to try to develop Lewis' replacement, but TE wouldn't have been much of a draft target with or without this re-signing. There's a guy from Boise St I like in the 7th or UDFA range to be that PS developmental blocker type. But aside from that kinda guy, not even really looking at the position this year.

Because Lewis is as old as dirt for a TE?

I'm not convinced of Jace yet. Will we be able to lock up Bob on a large contract? It's definitely not a major need anymore, or at all this year. I was just thinking we'd be putting that kinda money into a younger guy for his replacement, if at all.

Lewis does block very well, something I did not mention.

Sure Lewis blocks well but he’s not a dangerous receiver. He’s not threatening at all in the passing game. For as big as he is last season he seemed to really go dead on contact.

To me putting him out there really tips your hand to the defense as to what he’s gonna do and what the offense is probably doing. I’d rather have any other TE who offers the possibility of sneaking out of a play action and getting a huge gain.

Lewis doesn’t offer that anymore. I’m confident he doesn’t get half of this from any other team. I can’t imagine a 37 year old TE getting an offer in this financial climate.

it's team specific, we use a lot of 22 package, Lewis has never been a prime receiver, more a security receiver that usually gets a first or a TD, and is a excellent blocker in both pass pro and run.

I didn't think there would be offers for Lewis either, figured we could resign him later if needed, now I think the reason we signed him now is that there where offers, and he brought back the offer to see if we'd match it, and we did, you really discount his blocking ability, teams pay FB, and HB's 4 mil every year, and lewis out blocks any of them.

This is about having a teacher and leader in a room full of students in addition to the blocking. It's about the man, specifically, not the position or the age or anything else. It's not a replacement thing, because you can't replace what he has added to the team on the field and in the locker room with just another blocker--especially a young guy.

I don't always like those sorts of moves... but our TE room is honestly still developing prospects. Tonyan had his breakout year last year but he's still a converted small school WR with only 3 years NFL experience and one year producing. I think Lewis has been and will be far too valuable to the development of these players in a way that a coach or another player with a comparable role can't quite guarantee.

His deal is about who he is, not the role he plays.

That said, I also think his 1-dimentional nature sometimes plays to our advantage with a sneak attack for an easy conversion. When he catches the ball, he's usually left completely alone. That's the type of easy scheme and personnel conversion that comes with being "predictable." It's also worth noting he blocks well on passing plays, too; he's not just in there to run the ball.

I know fans don't like players that don't play often or don't make large stat sheet contribution. But I don't think most understand Lewis' impact on this team.

In my opinion, Rodgers isn't MVP last year without him. We don't make the NFC Championship game without him the last 2 years. The way the team talks about him, all the way up to LaFleur and Gutey. He transcended guys like Peppers and even Woodson (from a leadership standpoint). I think he has that much of an impact on what is going on there, especially Rodgers. Without him, he's not the same rejuvenated person. This team will lose something major when he's gone. I just hope to hell he stays on with the Packers after he retires, like Rob Davis did.

Lots of youth and a Silverback to show them the nuances of the game

Tonyan 26
Sternberger 24
Deguara 24
Dafney 23
Kaufusi 29
Nauta 23

“We’ve been talking a lot about how a positive wave can be so powerful, and I feel like we have that wave building and it's been building and building and building,” MVP quarterback and close friend Aaron Rodgers said before the NFC Championship Game. “It's kind of been backboned by so many great people, like Big Dog, who won't show up in the stat sheet a whole lot. But he is such a special human and greatest, in my opinion, blocking tight end, definitely of his generation.

“But what he brings from a personal standpoint, you can't quantify that. You really can't. You can't put a stat on that, but you can feel it. It's palpable. It's tangible. You can really reach out and touch that energy and that positivity and that love that he has for the guys, for myself. He's such a support beam for me. I can lean on him. He's like a big oak tree. He's taken care of all of us and there's a lot of guys who have brought special energy to the team.”

Does it really matter if Lewis is not a big threat in the passing game?
This was the #1 offense last year with that slow as molasses, old as dirt tight end last season.
Nobody blocks like him in the league with the exception of George Kittle.
Do you really want the Packers burning another draft pick on tight end because you're looking for a blocker at the position when you already have one in Lewis ?
It seems pretty clear that for LaFleur's offense to work, he needs a solid blocker at that position. None of the other options can provide that.

We should want his leadership and blocking. $4 Million a year isn't a lot. I think we can live with this.

It is, Pugger. It’s in Venice, Florida. I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago when I was there.
