Also, the players did vote on this, and not with their eyes closed. It was a close vote, so a good deal of players (Rodgers among the leaders of this) actively advocated against it and made clear that voting yes would mean a 17th game. That means like 45% of players voted against this thing. But 55% voted for it. And there was active lobbying going on. The ones that voted for it didn't do so without knowing what it meant. So playing this as an ownership move against the players is plainly inaccurate. They negotiated with the players, and they arrived at this conclusion.
Yeah this is where it seems to me more like a "wealthy players vs non wealthy players" battle.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑08 Apr 2021 10:25Also, the players did vote on this, and not with their eyes closed. The high end players don't want it because it is more work and they already are doing great financially. But the lower players want it because it isn't all that much more work but the benefits they get from it both during and after their careers will be awesome.
This is when I just start losing sympathy for the Kamars and Rodgers of the world.

I think the struggle the NFL is coming up with is how much more do they want to extend the season (like do you want the SB after Valentines Day?) or begin the season.NCF wrote: ↑08 Apr 2021 10:21I'm with you 100%. Put me firmly in the camp of loving having an extra meaningful football game. I do think they are doing this wrong, though, not adding an extra Bye. Always seems like coaches and players want them, so not sure why anyone would complain about it.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑08 Apr 2021 10:14I think 17 games is a perfectly fine idea. What sucks are Thursday night games. What sucks is not having a bye week mandated before any Thursday games.TheGreenMan wrote: ↑07 Apr 2021 21:40I don't know a single person that thinks the NFL going to a 17 game schedule as a good idea.
17 games and 2 or 3 preseason games is fine compared to 16 and 4. I don't even think player safety complaints related to an extra regular season game are particularly valid.
It really appears to me that the NFL absolutely does not want to start Week 1 before Labor Day. They probably feel that attendance and attention would be low for that week as it is usually the last "gasp" of summer vacation and activities for people. It's also probably just that much hotter too.
Legitimately, yes. Anything we can do to shorten up the offseason I am all for. I hate this time of year.

They want the SB to be President's Day Weekend so the day after is a national holiday
But every 4-6 years it would fall on Valentine's Day, so they'd likely want to avoid that for the sake of American marriages everywhere
