Royce Newman, OT, Mississippi - Round 4 - Pick 142
RIP JustJeff
Played tackle and guard. He's on various boards as both.

Hmm, interesting. He was on my radar, liked him, not as much as others available at this pick, but still.
I'll say this: whoever's under center next year will have a rock-solid OL once Bakh is back in the lineup.

Royce Newman was a four-star recruit when he signed with the Rebels. And after a redshirt season he never skipped a beat while in Oxford. He started at left guard early in his career but eventually moved to right tackle, flexing his versatility up front.
The Nashville, Ill. native played in nine games during his redshirt freshman season and 12 the following year. Then, as a senior, he stayed at tackle and played in all 10 games. Newman is a guy who has been there done that in the SEC and can be someone who can contribute immediately wherever he goes.
Shuttle and 3-cone not what we had grown accustomed to. Perfect size, though. Guessing a lot of room to get stronger.

The way Gutey talked yesterday, I think his plan is to get that O-line a bit bigger and stronger than we are used to. Maybe a bit less athletic.

we play more gap style blocking now, and remember zone blocking is front side only, back side is man o man.
really seems like a solid pick to me.

Actually Bakh's shuttle was 4.74 and Bulaga's was 4.75, so Newman's shuttle of 4.75 is exact. Both were 7.70 3-cones compared to 7.91 though.
Vert of 28 and bench of 23 are in the neighborhood of those guys, as well.
Also, I've been making a stink about this, but Gutey does not draft or acquire the athletic metrics we were used to, generally. Jon Runyan Jr, yes. But Billy Turner, Ricky Wagner, Elgkton Jenkins, and prrrobbbably, though we don't have the numbers, Hansen and Stepaniak would not have hit those measurables. He clearly puts more emphasis on power with ENOUGH movement skills than on movement with enough power, as we previously did.

John Eric Sullivan interview on packers.com right now.
Says he's smart, good initial quickness and lateral movement, versatile piece, excited to get him.

Tad old for my tastes, but I do trust our staff to coach Royce up.
6 OL picks in last 3 years. Commitment sure is there, and the competition among young guys will be fierce.

I'm not at all worried about his age (and Sullivan said the Packers didn't think about it one way or the other) for a later-round guy who you're looking at as a blue collar lunch pail addition to the team, rather than as a high-upside developmental player whose youth indicated huge room for growth.
This isn't a WR or RB or pass rusher where supreme athletic ability is the thing. 24 is fine for a RT/OG at pick 142.
True, 24 is not as impactful for a OL than for players at other positions.
