For those that don't know the story:

In 2015, the Thorp Trophy was found to have been in the possession of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc. instead of with the Vikings. After some research by various teams, it was discovered that, contrary to original belief, there had been only six of the individual trophies awarded to teams for their victories, with five of them coming during Joseph Carr's-then president of the league-life, and a sixth not long after his death: Those of the 1934 and 1938 New York Giants, the 1935 Detroit Lions, the 1937 Washington Redskins, and the 1936 and 1939 Green Bay Packers, along with one trophy given out to the 1961 Green Bay Packers that was first not thought to be part of the original pattern, being differently shaped than the ones originally presented.

Me too. I never really understood the IR "all-or-nothing" approach or even the limited return policy. I get that the league wanted to discourage teams from stashing players and whatnot but the quality-of-players/play degradation with those policies far outweighed the gains.

Unless that league allows players to bypass college for a year or 2, so the quality and intrigue increases a bit.

But I agree, as much as people love the NFL. A spring, or any other, football league will never be heavily watched.

It's a tough sell for sure, and a big reason why NFL owners rather let others risk their money.

Baseball and basketball work because the venues are smaller, there are more games and you can create a fun atmosphere with smaller crowds. Minor league sports actually can do very well when placed in cities without major market teams. The Sioux Falls Skyforce in the G League for instance is very popular in Sioux Falls, SD because there is no other NBA market. In fact, no other professional market. Plus, a 3,000 to 5,000 crowd actually feels like a lot and the revenue is there because there are a lot of games and small roster sizes.

Football is a whole new animal. Even small fields are 20,000 capacity and thus look oddly empty on game day. In addition, roster sizes are too big and there are minimal games because it is hard on the body. So ticket revenue can't pay for player expenses alone which means the league needs to get TV and sponsor revenue to be competitive and pay out a decent wage.

That's just not feasible. Not enough people watch if the team isn't in the same town and large markets don't care for minor league sports like a small town does. College football is the developmental league for the NFL. The only thing that even makes business sense is Arena football. But it's such a different product than the NFL that it is hard to take it seriously.

ooh I disagree. There have been plenty of teams the last 4 years or so that have jumped to amazing with QB questions going into an offseason.

2017 Vikings. 2018 to 2020 Rams. 2018 to 2020 49ers. The 2019 Bucs. The 2019 and 2020 Tennessee Titans. The Miami Dolphins.

I simply like the baseof the Lions roster. They will stink this year. But I liked their draft just like I liked the 2020 Panthers draft.
