Randall Cobb is coming to GB. GB is giving Houston a 6th round draft pick.

Houston is going to absorb $3MM of Cobb's 2021 salary and Cobb's cap hit on the 2021 Packers will be under $3million which means either Cobb is taking a pay cut or a restructure.

It wasn't even as cold as being articulated for the first question. He said Aaron was a big part of it and they wouldn't have pursued without Aaron. Still a really good player. Last night reminded him how important he will be to the team on the field and in the locker room.

An Open Letter to Randall Cobb

Dear Randall,

I spent the first several months of 2011 in Afghanistan. As a huge draft nut and Packers fan, I was lucky enough to spend the beginning of my deployment in a relatively safe, comfortable office job where I was able to watch the Packers win the Super Bowl and begin my annual relentless draft research in my spare time. In early March, after pouring over scouting reports and combine data and columns, I posted to a Packers message board a topic entitled, “The Player I Want Most.” That player, of course, was you. In the post, I detailed physical traits and testing results, but I focused more on the other stuff. I wrote,

“The best things about Cobb aren't his numbers or his versatility.

Cobb is clutch, with 3 game-winning TDs as a junior (and one previously in his career). He makes the biggest plays in the biggest moments.

Cobb has heart. He is said to be the type that lives football. Some analysts joke that he'd probably pay a team to play in the NFL, instead of wanting to get paid.”

I backed up such claims with talk of being voted most inspirational on your team and majors in leadership and community communications. I read interviews with you about how difficult it was to leave your teammates; to leave Kentucky without fulfilling the vision that you and coach Phillips had for the football program. I argued that you would be the perfect fit in Green Bay, both from a football and personality perspective.

In late April, on only 24 hours’ notice, I was told I was being re-assigned to a Forward Operating Base in Helmand Province; my time in relative comfort was coming to an end. I didn’t know what would await me there. I didn’t know the internet situation to continue my online courses; I didn’t know the living conditions; I didn’t know exactly what my role would be or how many missions I would go on. All I knew was that Sangin District was among the worst places in the country, in terms of violent resistance to our actions. I’m not afraid to admit that I was scared.

I was flown to a logistical base where I would wait several days for the next caravan heading my way. Each morning, I reported in to check the schedule and see if that would be my last day in relative safety. While I was there, NFL Draft weekend arrived. Due to the time difference, the draft came in the middle of the night. I asked the kid on staff duty in the empty computer room if I could switch the tv to ESPN, on mute. I sat by myself, in silence, watching the picks scroll by. Around 4:25 am, it happened. The Green Bay Packers selected you; my favorite team selected my favorite player in the draft.

It’s hard to explain the emotional connection this created. There was no one there to share the news with. No celebration. But there I was, possibly hours or days away from complete uncertainty; not knowing anything about the Special Ops team I would attach to, my new leadership, nothing. There was one thing I knew: my favorite team just selected my favorite player. It made it feel like, just maybe, everything was going to be okay.

I never buy jerseys of players on their first contract; it seems silly to sport the jersey of a guy who might only spend 4 years with a team. But I always knew, the second you signed your extension, I’d be making that purchase. I had no doubt that it would come.

I know that the analysts who joked that you would pay to play in the NFL were full of hyperbole. I know that there are teams around the league with loads of cap space in need of weapons. I know that you can probably sign a deal that initially, on the surface, might beat the deal the Packers can offer you.

But the player I wrote about in that post had a vision when he joined the Green Bay Packers--a Super Bowl. He would become part of the community. He would earn so much respect from his MVP QB that Rodgers would tell the media that you might become Ted Thompson’s best draft pick. That player would want to complete the vision--he’d know how special and how good he has it in Green Bay, and how close they are to completing that vision. That stuff might be worth more than an extra few million unguaranteed dollars.

I don’t know you at all, Mr. Cobb. I am not naive and I do not pretend to be inside your head. But I wanted you to know that I will never forget that moment at 4:25 am in Afghanistan; and that you’re my favorite Green Bay Packer. And I wanted you to know that it would mean the world not just to me but to all Packers fans if you stuck around, stuck with the teammates you’ve grown close to, and completed the vision you have for this team and this franchise and this offense. I hope when your career is done, I can remember you as my favorite Green Bay Packer, not just my favorite Green Bay draft pick.

Regardless of whether the answer Gute gave can or cannot be interpreted as the only reason Cobb is here because of Rodgers that is the fact of the matter.

I dont think anyone can dispute that and think the Packers were willing to trade for a 30 year old player in the slot after we traded up to get Rodgers as a slot.
