We need a 4th OLB to really emerge and grab that job.

Sounds like Garvin and Tipa are getting good reps there competing for that; that's actually a battle I look forward to. Both have a lot of upside in very different packages.

When I was at practice Garvin was getting screamed at after every ST rep. Not like in a "you suck" kind of way, but definitely in a "we need you ready" kind of way. I would wager he is definitely in the teams plans.

only guy I could really see at this point of trade compensation would be Devin Funchess.

Funchess is making this team. I was a bit nervous when they traded for Cobb, but looking at the practice reports every day, he might be our second best WR right now, as hard as it is to believe for you Funchess historians. Not only has he been a play maker, but by all accounts he has been very consistent, hasn't struggled, at all, with drops, and seems to have formed a connection with QB1. I very much realize the importance of that latter point as the most important in my stance.

Oh I absolutely agree. I hope that Funchess makes this team too and Winfree gets on the Practice Squad.

I just said only guy I could see having any actual trade value is Funchess and maybe at Jackson to that list as well. EQSB was a 6th rounder himself. So I don't see him having any trade value. Usually to have trade value you need have either shown something in the NFL or have Day 1/Day 2 draft pedigree.

But I fully agree. I think and hope Funchess is our 6th WR. You can't have enough depth. I get so sick of people complaining we don't have enough depth and talent...and then when we get overloaded with depth and talent at a position, they complain we have too much depth at a position and should trade him away.

I want Funchess on the 2021 Packers. I want Funchess on the 2022 Packers if he likes the organization and sees a potential hole available next year because some others have left.

This is what I was saying in the other post I made about Lazard possibly being a surprise cut. I think Funchess is going to take his spot.

I dont even think Funchess plays as WR6. I think he could creep into a significant role here. Especially in MVS continues his inconsistencies. Funchess could possibly end up as the best boundary receiver besides Adams.

I dont think Adams, Cobb, Rodgers, or MVS are cuttable. I dont think we keep more than 6. So either you keep Funchess and Lazard which I find redundant on offense and not beneficial to STs or one of them goes and Funchess is the better receiver I think. Lazard can block but I want my WRs getting open and making plays.

Correct. Well, his senior year college coach. They got a new staff in the building and it did not go well (to be fair, Mike Leach has a long history of friction with some of his athletes). He opted out for the season after 3 games, which seemed to have a lot to do with the coach, a lot to do with the new offense (no running, basically), and at least something to do with the Mississippi state flag.

Honestly, I believe strongly that the reasons Hill was available to us in the 7th are more suited to be discussed in that political forum you guys made. But the fact that he is here and by all accounts working hard is great football news.

Yeah I mean in terms of coverage breaks and miscommunications. Capers stepped into a very talented D that had stars everywere.

Pettines defense struggled year one. He didnt have a lot of talent to work with but I thought outside of some of the rookie QBs we faced that year our defense stunk.

usually new DC's get new toys, Capers did have a pretty solid group to begin with but Ted brought him a NT and a very good OLB, problem is a few of the key cogs left a year or two later, and we couldn't or didn't replace them, and Capers wouldn't or couldn't adjust his schemes to compensate, we never able to replace what Woodson and collins brought to the secondary, and Raji declined quickly

Pettine was given a couple very good pass rushers and that alone made his defense semi successful, however not much of anything seemed to work last year, hense his departure, excited to see what Barry can do, we have improved our personal over last season a little so he has some decent talent to work with.

Very short practice today. Don’t know if it even lasted a full hour.

I went with my dad and sister. Excellent outing and lots of fun. Ate in the 1919 pub for lunch. Driving home now and hopefully no heavy rain along the way. I will post some notes later.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the practice more than I thought I would.

Just drove back to Marshfield from Green Bay. Looks like GB might've gotten some of the strong thunderstorms after we left. Good that the practice was complete.

Reactions from today:

1. Aaron Rodgers clearly was relaxed. He chatted with MLF at midfield for much of the time and tossed a few of the passes to WRs during the drills.

2. Amari Rodgers was one guy I wanted to watch. His first drill was fielding punts. He muffed his first one! He did fine after that, mostly. His cuts in the returns were clean and sharp. Kylin Hill also fielded some punts and he did well too. Amari looked great in offense. Some noted a great catch that he made. I saw him make several catches. He also dropped two that I saw, one of which was probably a bad throw as much as his hands. The team also did more punt fielding later and I saw him bobble another one.

3. Randall Cobb was doing fine. He looked sharp.

4. I was on the end where the offense was practicing, so I hardly saw any defense until the final drills. The team moved swiftly through the transitions between drills. You could tell this was a scripted, well-produced session. Being a planner, I'd love to see what goes into preparation for a practice like this.

5. De'vondre Campbell looked like he was very deep when dropping into coverage, perhaps a good 10 yards from the LOS at the start. He is an imposing guy, compared to the other guys around him.

6. Devonte Adams is a guy who has a huge presence on the field. He seems very crisp and disciplined in his movements, as you might expect. No wasted motion, good hands catcher, all business on the field.

7. Jaire Alexander wasted no time at all. When the DBs were between activities, he and Savage were still drilling each other in ball awareness skills.

8. Practice was very short, barely over one hour.

9. The pace of the whole thing seemed on par. I wish I would've known the specific activities they were doing. But you could see efficient flows between the drills. Good focus overall.

10. Jordan Love was perhaps the busiest guy there. He was bouncing around through more drills than anybody else. He might've thrown the ball 75 times today. I saw two throws he'd want back but he seemed on track with his accuracy overall. He had one pass to Lazard on the sideline that was high (where only the WR could catch it) and accurate, but late enough that Jaire was easily able to swat it away. That play drew some "ahhhhh" from the crowd.

11. Robert Tonyan is another guy who was very active. When he wasn't in offensive drills, he was practicing some blocking drills with one of the coaches.

12. Devin Funchess was as active as any of the WRs. He did go down without contact one time and walked off the field. I'm thinking he must've had a cramp. Staff worked on his leg for a time but he came back 10 minutes later. They did practice him in some of the TE drills.

13. Somebody said that Rashan Gary practiced at least one snap, but I didn't see that. I would've loved watching him. A lot of players had their jerseys pulled half way up, so spotting numbers from a distance was challenging. Zedarius was on the sideline the whole time. I never saw Preston.

14. Kylin Hill was very busy too. They had him split wide a couple of times, similar to what Aaron Jones does at times. So, he's getting lots of opportunities.

15. Josh Myers is a very personable guy and he already looks like a crowd favorite. He interacted with kids when biking over to the practice field and drew plenty of smiles.

16. TJ Slaton looked to be on the sideline much of the time, with coaches. Yes, he's a big guy.

17. Eric Stokes practiced with the 1s for a time. It seemed like they were practicing zone coverage when he was in there, where he had a safety over the top.

Probably but also at the moment I wouldn't really care. If he is better than Funchess he should get the spot but it doesn't seem like he will be at the moment.

Lazard, Adams, Amari, Cobb and MVS are locks. This team is not disrupting Rodgers right now.
