From Lambeau to Lombardi, Holmgren, McCarthy and LaFleur and from Starr to Favre, Rodgers and now Jordan Love we’re talking Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers football. This Packers Forum is the place to talk NFL football and everything Packers. So, pull up a keyboard, make yourself at home and let’s talk some Packers football.
to me Dillon is a straight line runner, once in a while we see a little lateral to adjust to hit a crease, but it takes him time to get to it, and to often he hits a wall, his power allows him to gain a few yards, the run blocking just hasn't opened big enough gaps so he can do what he did to Tenn. last year.
Why does he have to do what he did against Tennessee last year to be effective? You give him more than 5 carries a game to see him wear down a defense and get to the point where he is doing what he did against tennessee. Look at the Titans v Seattle game from this year, Henry had like 20 yards in the first half and then exploded in the second half as the hawks D got tired. Now i know we have Jones so Dillon wont be getting 30 carries a game, but I mean cmon can we get the second round pick 12 at least? Im ready to see him and Jones on the field more as Jones goes out for passes or Defenses have to guess which one is about to get the handoff.
Dillon doesnt have to look like he did against Tennessee to be doing a good job in my opinion. He averages very close to four yards a carry. Guess what that means? You could hand it to him every down and you would never turn the ball over on downs and you would find yourself on the goalline after a long drive where your D got to rest. Just need the patience for that kind of play. I love 3 yards and a cloud of dust, Rodgers doesnt seem to.
And im not trying to sound like im complaining. The O has looked fine last two games, just saying what I would like to see us get into as the season progresses.
I want to at least pick and chose games where it's like, "alright. This week is the week of Dillon" I would like say 6 games or so this year where Dillon gets 20+ carriers. Even just the threat that teams have to prepare for this "it could be a smashing type of week"
Especially with our Oline likely being the same guys where we will see more man blocking, I would like to see a lot more Dillon this week.
I know. I said that after the first two preseason games and got destroyed for it.
probably from me ( I have player defense issues ) I bought into the Cobb comments and his draft hype, plus the training camp article from one of the beat writers, but Amari hasn't played up to any of that hype, the guy runs like his diaper is full, since we used a 3rd on him I expect he'll get 3 years to change our minds
Oh it was. But I wouldn't say you have player defense issues (except for the holy leader). You have positional lust issues that can in anyway help the holy leader. You went on a rant about his slot and how slot is what we need and slot will fix all and he will be viewed as a steal. Did I mention you said he was a slot? Your bar was minimum 800 yards I believe before training camp. And it dropped to 500 - 600 because "Cobb would take away some production"
Yeah I'm certainly not gonna give up on the guy. But you could tell vs Houston that the game appeared too big for him.
He seems to try and rely on his agility when that is not the type of player he is. He needs to flipping go. I think confidence is his biggest issue. Hope he gets some confidence plays.
the only thing I was wrong about Was the ability of Amari, when the slot receiver position produces as much as it has it is wise to get a quality slot receiver, Guty appeased Rodgers by drafting Amari in round 3 and bringing Cobb back, so far neither has been the answer at that position, that doesn't make me wrong.
to big for Amari ? sorta the issue with most Rookies early, to me he just looked SLOW
I just know this, if ya want to use up tempo quick release pass schemes then the better your slot receivers are the better, 1/3 or more of Adams receptions last year came from him in the slot, probably the same for Lazard

Dillon doesn't get 4 yrds a run, he averages that because he gets a 6 or 8 yrd run to go along with his 2 or 3 yrd runs, and that does not move the chains, our run blocking as I said does not consistently open very wide run lanes, Jones excels because he hits those creases faster then the DL can close them.
I think as you said once the defense is tiring those holes remain open longer and Dillon then could do well.
I watched small ball for 30 years, 4 yrds and a cloud of dust doesn't do it for me, sure I like a run game, but I prefer what a guy like Jones gives me over the dust bowl stuff, more then anything I love a great passing QB carving up a defense.

The way you describe and discredit Dillon you make it sound like he should have been an UDFA or a 7th rounder instead of a 2nd round pick. I think he was drafted highly because he is good!

your right I think he was over drafted by a round or two, in fact I actually think Hill should be our #2, I simply am not into Dillon as much as others here are, if he proves me wrong then I'll gladly admit it.
He does well when the blocking gives him a lane and someone takes out the lber, other wise he has to carry defenders, and I'd rather the RB that has skills to not have to carry defenders to get the first down, thats just how I feel concerning Dillon.

fair enough, i like your honesty. As for me, i like lightning (Jones) AND thunder (Dillon). I like guys who are capable of and do carry defenders. Its a cool way to get yards!

I think a lot of how I fell about running the ball comes from so much watching of the smash mouth 3 or 4 yrds cloud of dust small ball era I grew up watching, once the Lombardi era ended it became boring to watch that stuff, I remember watching the Air Coryell passing games a lot back then hoping we'd do that, same with Walsh's Niners and the west coast schemes where the pass is used just like a run that we did with Holmgren and Favre.
mostly though I think ya need to have a good balance of run to pass, I think it improves both when you do, so I hope our OL gels up like last season and Dillon will get more touches.
We don't have enough plays for 3 RBs. I love Hill as a prospect, but I don't like him getting snaps right now.
Jones and Dillon both have valuable uses but need enough touches to get into a rhythm. I understand that Dillon looks slow at times, but he beats up defenses and he falls forward and gets an extra yard or two every time. And we've seen what he can do if pushed into fulltime duty for a game.

I have to disagree a bit with your take on this, imo rookie RB's don't get touches mostly based on being able to block, pick up blitzers, but heck Dillon failed at that twice recently, one was a sack on Rodgers ( memory could be off) so imo the only reason Hill is stuck with kick return duty has to do with Dillon being a high draft choice.
course I didn't like the pick so much and that could cloud my judgement some, it's not that I don't like bruiser type RB's, loved lacy first two years, but he had some shiftiness that I don't see to much with Dillon, but I'am willing/hoping to be wrong about him
Hill won’t play until the Packers are more confident in his pass blocking and playbook understanding. He might be there now, who knows but no reason to be pulling Jones or Dillon off the field for Hill just yet.
As for carries Jones has been getting more than 20 touches a game last two weeks. I would t mind trying to get that number down a little and get Dillon the ball more. Especially on plays in makes sense to run Dillon. He’s always going forward. Get him in on short yardage plays. He’s perfect for first downs as you know he’s gonna get at least 2 and possibly drag people for another 3 or 4.
We may have such a quality stable of backs that one could eventually be good trade bait if an odd man out scenario develops, or one becomes disgruntled and wants more carries...but I do not agree that just because Hill looks like a star that makes Dillon a bum. All three backs could be stars, Dillon gets snaps because of his ability, not draft position. I believe his ability warrants more snaps. I also think he is very good in Pass protection. Wrong Collinsworth ragged on him about PP and then they showed the replay and two guys were coming at 12, there was absolutely nothing any man with one body could do to block two free blitzers.
The Lazard hatred is just stupid at this point @lupedafiasco.
Did I say something incorrect?
Yes. Lazard going down not being a loss is incorrect. I believe this offense would suffer (to a point) if he's not there. Yes, they should be able to adjust and still succeed. But I think you are underestimating his impact.
Does Jones score on this TD without Lazard taking care of Bosa 1 on 1?

WR2 by snap count... The coaches seem to think he is important.

who said Dillon is a bum? no one that I know that I've read, if your reffering to my comments thats a very exaggerated take, I simply prefer a different style RB.
as to Hill, every year rookie RB's excel in this league, in fact if there is any position Rookies do well at it's RB, obviously ya want them to be good at picking up a blitzer so that will hold most back a bit.
I have no problem with Hill based on who he is or him being a rookie. I just think the offense is not running enough plays to merit the usage of 3 RBs. He's been in more than I want him in, even. I want Dillon and Jones. RB3 gets reps in case of injury and of course as kick returner.

Especially when we have enough mouths to feed outside of the RB position as it is.
Kylins a Rookie drafted in the 7th round playing on a contending team. Hel be fine with whatever snaps he gets for now. Dillon seems like a great guy, but many backs may start to get disgruntled considering his draft status compared to current skill and ability. If we have to move one eventually, it’s all good. But right now the room is loaded and it’s a good problem to have. I do hope to see Dillon get more carries. I’d like for him to touch the ball 12x per game minimum.
MLF offense averages around 61 plays per game and about 25 rushing attempts per game each year. In a graduated system of RB carries we may be looking at 12, 8, 5 carries for 3 backs or something like 15, 7, and 3. In the latter example, there isn't much need for the 3 unless he brings something the other RBs don't. At this point, I wouldn't say Hill brings anything Aaron Jones does not.
On the subject of spreading the ball around, on average we throw the ball 34 times a game. We probably want to get our top WR at least 12 of those looks. Aaron Jones or Dillon should probably get at least 6 a game. Robert Tonyan or any TE should probably get at least 5 targets a game. So now we are looking at about 11 targets left over for WR 2-6 and that is being conservative with the targets to the non-WRs and WR1.
There are only so many touches to go around and if we are throwing it more that may not be good for the team and their chances of success.
