Wait, so his honesty tainted the clarity of his statements to them?

What Yoop is saying is that given Rodgers' blatant and intentional strategic dishonesty toward the media earlier this year, coming away from a meeting with him raving about his honesty might be evidence that they were overrating their impressions of him in a meeting relative to the full picture. I know what they mean is that after things come out--both when he returned to the team and then with the covid stuff, he speaks very plainly and openly and transparently in a way that feels refreshing.
But determining that that indicates he's being the most honest or that you can get a realistic feel for his inner workings based on that staged, limited time around him... seems like a stretch to people

For instance, like, Bill Simmons' podcast today absolutely skewered these guys for thinking they could spend an hour in a production meeting with Rodgers and then speaking as if they had any insight. The national media went in on Rodgers' dishonesty two weeks ago and then like it never happened, we have a broadcast crew touting his honesty and the "feel" they got from speaking to him. It just seemed laughable, regardless of how you feel about Rodgers. I think we can all agree he's a more complicated fella than all that
I honestly think the discussion is being a little overanalyzed. And i dont think Chris and Al should be skewered for passing on their impression of the meeting, other than it was a little out of place. They made sure they said they werent breaking any news.
The team is 10-3 and Rodgers is riding a happy cloud right now. Im sure he really does want to stay forever in this moment, and Al and Chris got that impression.
But in the playoffs when the STs cost us a game, reality will set back in. Rodgers will see he is another year older, and the cap situation will smack everyone in the face...and decisions will be made.
Then, whoever talks to Rodgers at that time might gather a very different impression.
I dont think Rodgers was giving those guys happy talk and really thinking "cant wait to leave this hell hole". I just think hes happy right now, but that could change at any time.

Right. I mean this is basically like last year. Last year Rodgers was the happiest I've ever seen him, and he talked about how much fun he was having as openly as I've ever seen. But in the back of his mind, he had already made some decisions about how the offseason would go.Drj820 wrote: ↑13 Dec 2021 13:40I honestly think the discussion is being a little overanalyzed. Anyone who is trying to draw an impression of his demeanor should only do so with that stated context that "well, everything seemed fine last year too."
The reason the conversation is getting attention isn't because they broke news--like you said, they were careful not to--but because they had it over a fully-relevant football game that only had an 8-point margin in the 3rd quarter. So when you just stop reporting on the game in front of you and start rambling on about offseason storylines and speculation while people want you to talk about the ongoing game, it draws attention. That they said a bunch of ridiculous stuff just deflected the complaint from "why don't you talk about the game" to "wait, you think Rodgers is the most honest person and you just have a feeling things are good now? Seems suspect."
Basically they just made themselves look a little naive and taken by his charm while they should have been discussing the ongoing drive in a game that was still undecided even as it felt decided. The next possession, they went off on matt Nagy's potential firing. That was sweet as a fan, but it was still just a ton of storytelling over top of a still-in-reach football game
I dont disagree it was out of place. In the game thread, right after they stumbled through that convo and then collinsworth mentioned about how “field goals were a touchy subject in Green Bay,” i commented that the diatribe was awkward and asked if Collinsworth thinks he is at a bar.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑13 Dec 2021 13:59Right. That said, I think Rodgers was happy last year. I think things blew up because Brady beat him and he lost once again in an NFCCG. I think he saw all the new toys brought in for Brady and Rodgers felt he was treated like “the player” and it was costing his legacy. I also think things blew up because he won MVP and the team wouldn’t give him the long term security he expected. I think those two factors, led to the off-season pissing contest.
At this point last year, I don’t believe Rodgers planned on the offseason going as it did.

I certainly think Rodgers had issues with the organization that bothered him and had been simmering - hell, we all do within our own employment spheres - but not to the point of blowing it all up. I think the plan to create the firestorm didn't materialize until, as Drj820 mentions, those other events happened.
Rodgers on McAfee, going to be making more waves with his comments. Easy thing to respond and agree to and he didn't. Go to the end around 4:35 for the short of it.
RIP JustJeff
I took his final statement in that clip to be in line with his earlier stated position keeping conversations private and holding his cards close to his chest.
Another way of putting it: I don't take much away from those comments one way or the other. Pro or con. The media? Like you, I doubt they take the same approach.

It's hard not to read into how he responded to that question. The pause, the look on his face, and the non-committal response. Doesn't mean you are wrong. Rodgers tends to take simple things and make them more complex than he needs to. Sometimes, its just a game to him I think.APB wrote: ↑14 Dec 2021 14:43I took his final statement in that clip to be in line with his earlier stated position keeping conversations private and holding his cards close to his chest.

Regardless, some of the media will run with it. Especially when the talk the last few weeks had started to drift the other direction.
I've always been of the mindset that he's gone after this year. For several reasons. This doesn't change my mind or reinforce it really.

The question was, " So you love being a Green Bay Packer right now?" That shouldn't be a hard question to answer and to answer it the way he did will definitely, and should, make waves. Not a hard question to answer even if he wants to skirt around it. He talked about the locker room the entire time, so how about saying, "Ya, I love playing ball with these guys right now." Personally, I see the way he stopped and the way he answered tells me there is no chance he is back with the Packers this year.

A lot of people were sure he was gone last summer. I'm not going to read too much into any of this. Like they always say - watch what they do and not what they say.Pckfn23 wrote: ↑14 Dec 2021 14:55The question was, " So you love being a Green Bay Packer right now?" Let's entertain the notion he still wants out. He would have to be traded or retire. So what team would be attractive to him? What team is just a QB away from the promised land? The Steelers, WFT, NYG, Jets, Broncos, 49ers and Indy probably will be in the market this offseason. I doubt he'd want to go to either of the NY teams but the others might interest him. I suspect Gute would do what TT did if Rodgers is traded and would to send him to the AFC. The big question is can any of these teams afford his contract? I for one do not want him to go anywhere. I don't have a lot of faith in Love taking over the reins right now. I hope AR stays one more year before a change is made.

From a cap perspective, 1 more year is nearly impossible. To pay Rodgers 40 million would mean the Packers have to gut the team. They would go 2-15 after cutting or letting so many players walk.Pugger wrote: ↑14 Dec 2021 15:33A lot of people were sure he was gone last summer. I'm not going to read too much into any of this. My interpretation of that answer: he did not want to say "Yes(, I am happy to be a Green Bay Packer)" and then have to eat his words if he and/or the team decide they should part ways after this season.
Definitely being non-commital, which I don't have a problem with. It does make me slightly less convinced he will stick around after this year.

Rodgers probably heard collinsworth say he was staying, and now he probably asked Mcafee to tee him up a question like that so he could make the pendulum swing the other way. I think its entertainment for 12.

I definitely think there is an element of that to his handling of this.

That is gross. He is paid zillions of $$$ and he cannot even do what the cheapest hooker would not fail to understand & comply, that is to „play along“ at least with a little bit of politically correctness (which would have been to agree that he loves to be a GBP because it is a empty statement anyway nowadays)? The dude is so gone. It is also a slap in the face of us fans. The dude really has closed the book and does not want to have anything to do with Gute & Murphy anymore, he just did not want to waste a full season with so much talent around. I know it is „just“ one answer, but it is so telling like if you casually ask your wife if she loves you and she talks about loving being around with your friends for barbecues.
You mean a player wasn't honest with the press. Turnabout is fair play. If the press were honest 100% of the time with players it would be one thing............YoHoChecko wrote: ↑13 Dec 2021 12:44What Yoop is saying is that given Rodgers' blatant and intentional strategic dishonesty toward the media earlier this year, coming away from a meeting with him raving about his honesty might be evidence that they were overrating their impressions of him in a meeting relative to the full picture.
