The Chiefs had Blaine Gabbert as their backup last year...
The 49ers had Sam Darnold as their backup last year...

Teams with good QBs do not have the so called good backup. It's not a good investment.
sam darnold is a starter this year dude lol

both those guys are 10000x better than clifford
That Sam Darnold is a starter is an indictment of the Vikings, not a celebration of Darnold's talent... :rotf:
if you think clifford and darnold represent the same kind of backup, there is no need to continue the conversation. Thank you for your time.

I remember once when NCF posted some stats about Darnold showing that he was the 19th-best QB of a certain criteria over a certain period of time, and I was like "wait, 19th is pretty good! That's not a blow" and NCF was like "read closer, buddy; it was out of 19. And he was last by a lot"

Yeah, Darnold stinks.

Clifford is in year 2 and stinks. Darnold is in year 7 and stinks. Darnold has little to no upside. Clifford has upside.

I am not convinced that Clifford is our #2. Pratt very well could be.

You are under the assumption that veteran means they are automatically competent starters. That is a fallacy.

as with Clifford, most backup QB's need more support from supporting cast, they need receivers to run better routes, because to often there throws wont allow receiver adjustments ( like Pratts 5 yard darts)

what a veteran offers is more experience, which often translates to less mistakes, and Clifford, even Pratt would likely done better with a few starters.

in name only, there are 32 starting QBs in the league, teams don't usually have two at the same time. It rare that the back up wins you games. He's got to keep the O together and function well enough so a team can win.

Clifford was playing with the backups not the #1s. He threw a good enough deep ball to keep defenses honest in a game that counts. With the #1s I think he can keep us in the game. The D and the talent around him will win the game.

Sean was fine in the Cleveland game. 10 of 19 for 111 yards and orchestrated a TD and FG drive.

But if you exclude the clock stopping spike and two balls thrown out of bounce before the FG to end the half...Clifford's stats vs CLE look very different. He is then 10 for 16. Add the two drops he experienced from Melton and closes even further.

That being said, I do think Pratt, I also stated this in April, will become our eventual #2 but probably not this year unless it is out of necessity.

I don't see a ton of upside going with another backup outside of a few names like Baily Zappe or a trade with the Browns for Tyler Huntley. If it were me, I would roll with what I got.

Agreed, not much to choose from

The Falcons have Kirk and Penix, so they are showcasing Taylor Heinicke in the 3rd preseason game. Typical back -up. He's got a few NFL starts under his belt and won some/lost some over the years

Heinicke vs GB at Lambeau, he delivered an 86 passer rating in a loss

It's such a mentally demanding position it's hard to see a star till he shines, Clifford has had a few nice plays, thrown receivers open, however he still has a long way to go, gets polarized on reads and almost always seems late to trigger, add in all his marginal talent and he's a easy disappointment as a preferred backup, Pratt it seems is more talented, has a quicker tempo, just lacks refinement, agree, imo at some point he'll take Cliffords job

wonder what they'd want in a trade?

I can't imagine it's much. He actually does have a very favorable contract to trade for. I would say a 6th or 7th would get it done.

I think I'd be very interested at that price.

Herman gave Clifford the 2nd lowest grade on offense behind Newman, course he did say he played with 2nd and 3rd, 4th, and 5th stringers which obviously doesn't make it easier, imo Clifford looked late with everything he did, really out of sink, he's looked better.

the backup is important enough to have better then either of the 2 we saw the other night.

or we wouldn't be talking about it, for me, it's just that simple :idn: :aok:

My guess is that Heinicke will be released by ATL, so if you don't want to compete vs other teams for his services, then you can offer a late pick as noted above or another bubble player they'd be interested in. The Packers do have a leg up vs other NFL teams given Heinicke grew up a fan of Brett Favre

https://www.panthers.com/news/driven-by ... to-the-nfl

Eating brats and watching Brett – that's what Sundays in the fall were like for Taylor Heinicke as a child.
"That's when I really fell in love with the game – watching Brett Favre," Heinicke said.

But his love of the game was truly instilled by another Brett – the one making the brats. Brett Heinicke was Taylor's father, his best friend, his biggest fan. Brett Heinicke passed away seven years and five days ago, the victim of a heart attack at the age of 50 – days after his son completed his freshman season at Old Dominion. One day before he returned home for winter break.

Sunday, Taylor Heinicke will be the starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. When he throws his first NFL touchdown against the Falcons, there's a good chance he'll pat the tattoo on his left shoulder that's a tribute to his father and point to the sky.

"He did everything for me," Heinicke said.

"Brett Heinicke was the dad that on Sundays after we had a home game and he would be up here, he would come in and feed the staff his world famous brats – I'm talking as good a brat as I've ever had in my life," Wilder said. "You looked forward to the home games as a coaching staff because you knew that Brett Heinicke was coming in to feed everybody. And that was Taylor's dad – one of the nicest human beings I've ever met."

Before Heinike enrolled at ODU, brats, queso and the Packers were always on the menu. Heinicke has the recipe, and he knows how to use it. On the recent anniversary of his father's death, Heinicke's aunt texted him a photo of the brats as a remembrance.

"I can't tell you the secret ingredient," Taylor Heinicke said. "That's a Heinicke recipe."

Id rather just cut Clifford and role with Pratt as the backup. What good does it do us trading draft capital for a player that could potentially never play and still be had for just as cheap during the season if the situation calls for it?

I would be more worried about the packers backup QB situation if Clifford had stunk while playing with the ones vs the other teams backups.

Clifford’s play against Denver is not apple to apples or even close.

Unless you give Clifford the keys to the sports car it’s hard to accurately assess his play.

Instead he was driving a station wagon with 2 flat tires…so I didn’t expect much.
Love is the answer…

Broncos just suffered an injury at CB on Sunday afternoon

Broncos cornerback Damarri Mathis was carted off the field with an ankle injury after the second play from scrimmage in the team’s preseason game against the Cardinals. An MRI revealed Mathis has a high-ankle sprain, Mike Klis of 9News reports. That could mean Mathis begins the season on injured reserve. He was slated to be the Broncos’ No. 3 cornerback behind Riley Moss and Patrick Surtain.

Right now, one of the Packers' private jets is en route to Denver - could be for a variety of reasons
Just wondering if one of our surplus CBs (King) is headed there in a trade- DEN would have seen him in action at joint practice and PS game
