Add Houston to the coach openings. They fired Culley.
Brings us up to 8. About normal.

Crazy roughly 25% of coaches get fired every year.

There I’d like < 1% of coaches who get to retire on their own schedule, the rest are all fired.
Is 8 normal? I always considered 5-6 normal; 8 seems high. What's the track record on this. I feel like I remember it being 7 the year we hired MLF, and that felt high.
Pretty sure there was 8 in 2019.

According to thehuddle.com, back as far as I could find.

2021 = 7
2020 = 5
2019 = 8
2018 = 7
2017 = 6
2016 = 7
2015 = 7

wow, so rounding to the nearest whole number, 7 is the average; while it is also the median and the mode. I guess 7 is the very definition of normal

This year has some weird factors in terms of fired coaches.

Urban in Jax was fully desired to be there awhile by the owner, he just couldnt behave himself and kicking a player became the final straw.

In Houston, the coach did a great job, was well behaved, and won 4 more games than expected...he was just hired to weather a PR storm and then was disgracefully kicked to the curb by a disgraceful organization.

In Oakland, the owner loved the coach and didnt want to fire him. The league just twisted the knife on one of their own.

In Miami, a coach was fired after winning 8 of his last 9 games and two straight winning seasons. I blame organizational disfunction for that more than lack of on field performance.

I would say really only 4 coaches were fired for not getting it done on the field, the rest for either being employed by a trash can juice org or their own delinquent behavior. I know coaches get fired for different things every year, just seems way more this time for stuff that has nothing to do with gameday.

The four who got canned for lack of meeting reasonable expectations on the field would be Fangio (who i think anyone would have been fired because you need a QB to win in a division with Herbert, Mahomes, and Carr), Zimmer, Nagy, and Joe Judge.

But that just always seems to happen. We are just a little over average. So yeah, perhaps a bit more this year.

One could even make an argument the 5 last year was lower because of COVID than it may have been.

My HC guesses for each opening.

Bears - Harbaugh
Vikings - Pederson
Broncos - Hackett
Dolphins - Bienemy
Texans - Mayo
Jaguars - O'Brien
Giants - McDaniels
Raiders - Will stick with Bisaccia

I think Leftwich gets a job.

Very much in the Jax mix. But I have a hunch he may be left out this go around. Or Bienemy will be again.

I feel like at this point it's patently obvious that Bienemy gives a terrible interview. You don't get passed over in THAT many interviews unless something is going wrong in them. That, or owners just won't take on someone with his past baggage because then if ANYTHING goes wrong, they'll be told they should have seen it coming. I just don't see him getting a top gig if he hasn't by now.

Raiders can Mayock. Assuming coach will be gone too.

Queue up Harbaugh to the Raiders and have it end in 2-3 years again.

Mayock has been bad and ultimately the results sit with him as GM but you don't know how much was Gruden

I think most of it was Gruden. He made all the decisions. I don't understand why Mayock took that gig. Raiders only got better after Gruden was gone.

But I hope Mayock is back on NFL Network for the draft.

Mayock was a TV guy who would probably never get a GM role but was given it by TV friend Gruden.

Agree that hope to see him back on TV as it suited him.

I think it’s easy to call him bad for his first round track record. But he has done a better job in the later rounds for sure. Lot of day 2 and 3 gems that really filled out that roster. And Henry Ruggs not something I would dig him for. That should be on Gruden and the culture he built if anyone.

Maybe Gruden chose the day one glory picks and the later rounds were left to Maycock were he just played the board as it fell to him.
