So....the NFL is cracking down on taunting.Which is typical lameness from the old-ass owners. Not that I'm a fan of taunting, its the over-the-top overreaction that grinds my gears.

My question is: If the player ( taunter) turns a 180 and faces the other way and then does the exact same thing - is it still a taunting penalty ?
Or is it just the in-your-face part of the action that draws the flag ? On this one, the RB is facing the tauntee at first, but he clearly turns away to finish his soliloquy. 15 yard penalty is a bit much for that minor one

The NBA is more fun to watch because of the taunting and celebration. The NFL does anything to make the sport less fun to watch.

It's weird because the NFL turned a corner on end zone celebrations. Making team celebrations allowable has been GREAT for the enjoyment of watching; they even have that end zone camera rto specifically highlight the team end zone celebrations.

For a while individual celebrations were allowed but team activity was banned. Then the T.O. and Randy Moss and OchoCinco era of celebrations led to a crackdown on individual celebrations which got a ton of No Fun league energy going.

The league seemed to completely reverse that trend by not only allowing but encouraging team celebrations, while also easing up a little on the individual ones.

And this this point of emphasis crackdown on taunting and it's like "did you learn nothing?"

I get that they hate all the lowlight clips of guys flashing the deuces when they think they've broken away only to get tackled unexpectedly, but this is an overreaction. Like, I get it. I love good sportsmanship and clean play. But like patriotism, it's better when it's voluntary, not mandated.

yes it is -
And it shows how Mara and his cabal are completely tone deaf to the players and fans...who line their pocketses.

In a few years, they'll relent and set up the Official NFL Taunting Tent, erected by Cialis, the Official Wrinkle Remover of the NFL

There is a difference between being there because that's where the play ended and purposely getting into somebody's face. You have to be given the chance to get up. Once again this seems like something that refs jump on, in the preseason. Then they call it heavily the first weekend, costing some team, usually us, a victory, thereby giving the talking heads fodder the next week. They drop calling it for half the season till a ref needs a cheap excuse to help somebody beat a spread.

I'd rather see them call assisting the runner or jumping in late trying to push the pile.

Although I prefer the Barry Sanders approach, I understand the "look at me" machinations. However, what bothers me is consistency - if one is going to go through all the gyrations after really putting it to the other guy(s), there should be an equivalent "walk of shame" when they screw up.

Usually these penalties are waaaaay over called during the preseason and then not called during the regular season. My guess because this call has gotten so much negative backlash, the NFL is going to tell the refs to cool it.

And I hate when we put the refs in charge of making these calls too. I hate subjective penalties so much.

they really went the other way on that call. in the tweet I linked above with Dolphins RB- he gets up and acts all high & mighty- but the reality is- the last 5 yards were all his OL mate carrying him forward. I remember one in a game with Packers vs Panthers and the Panthers OL literally grabbed the RB and tried to throw him into end zone. Its just not called at all

My age is definitely showing on this issue. I hate taunting! I always believed in letting your play do your talking. I get so sick of the reaction of someone making a tackle after an 8 yard gain looking like they just made the play of the century when they just allowed the other team to gain 8 yards. Too much of the celebrating after a play is a "look at me" type of act. I like it when they celebrate with teammates. I rather like the Packers defense doing the group celebrations after an interception.

What the Colts RB was hardly any "look at me" excessive celebration. He was just legitimately excited. I actually thought his reaction was "toned down"

Yes. Standing over a guys head and essentially T-bagging is disgusting. But 95% of celebrations are not this and are fun.

Why these stringent, unnecessary taunting rules? Simple: rich arseholes are control freaks. Can't be helped. This is what happens when they achieve that kind of power.

taunting causes retaliation, but this wasn't that, I can see calling, "assisting the RB", because this stuff is getting out of hand, no way that RB would have gotten those last 5 yrds had it not been for the OL pushing him, but simply celebrating a good play isn't taunting.

It is social primate dynamics.

The refs just need to get in there, get the ball, and move it along. If a guy refuses to move on, then toss the flag.

Happy Birthday NFL

August 20 - in 1920, the American Professional Football Conference was formed in Canton, Ohio. This would later be renamed the American Professional Football Association a month later. It is now known as the NFL

While paid players predate the formation of the NFL in 1920 by several decades, most players were paid on a per-game basis. In 1926, Red Grange changed that when he signed a 19-game deal with the Chicago Bears that earned him roughly $100,000.

During the next few decades, player salaries depended on their star quality and the teams they played for. Some teams were stingy with money, while others paid in other ways--in the late 1950s, Baltimore Colts often got free beer after games. Starting around the late 1950s, players demanded a league minimum, but that fell on deaf ears. The average player at the time was getting less than $6,000 per season

The Players Association finally won recognition in 1970, and the owners agreed to a $9,000 minimum salary for rookies and $10,000 for veterans. The minimum salary crept higher through the 1970s. ( current rookie minimum = 660,000)

Salary Wars

Rival leagues often helped escalate salaries. In the 1960s, it was the AFL, followed by the WFL in the 1970s and the USFL in the 1980s. Salaries jumped due to bidding, including the famous John Brodie case where he was offered close to $750,000 to go to the AFL. He had been making $35,000 in the NFL.

The Big Money

The NFL strikes in 1982 and 1987 led to an explosion in salaries because the players won the rights to get more team revenues as well as the ability to bargain collectively. That helped average salaries go from $198,000 in 1986 to almost $800,000 by the start of the 1993 season

Free Agency

With the court-won opening of Free Agency, the salaries started on a trajectory that brings us into the modern game. Reggie White's landmark deal for 4 years, $ 17M was considered astronomical at the time - but his HOF-level playmaking meant he was totally worth it.

Today, a mid 1st round pick garners the same contract - without ever playing a down in the NFL.

Happy Birthday NFL

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Jets are looking to trade for a pass rusher before the season starts.

The Jets lost Carl Lawson to a torn Achilles' earlier this week and don't have the depth to backfill the massive role he was going to play. New York finished 20th in sacks per game last year and Lawson, who was signed to a three-year, $45 million contract this offseason, was set to be a difference-maker in Robert Saleh's revamped defense. Even if the Jets do manage to acquire someone via trade, it's unlikely that they'll be able to produce at the same level that Lawson was expected to. The New York defense projects to be beatable at all levels once again in 2021.
Interesting.

The Packers just finished a week of practice with the Jets. The Packers also have some depth with quality pass rushers. Not advocating we dump any of our good rushers but it’ll be interesting to see if anything develops from this reporting.

Absolutely not happening.

Some key information came out yesterday in MLF's press conference that Z. Smith isn't looking good with his back. Sounds like he is questionable to go week 1. I'm at the point right now that we have the depth at pass rusher. Let him rest up and be as effective as possible. Hopefully it isn't a surgery thing, but this has been bothering him for a while now so I wouldn't rule that we hear something after this season that Z. has back surgery to repair something.

Also, this is exactly what I was talking when people complain about how we have too much resources or depth at one position. Literally all it takes is a headline of "injured" and suddenly that super deep position isn't so deep no more.

Ryan Wood and Silverstein were talking about this earlier saying the back issue is lingering. Z has been incredibly fragile during his time here. His first year he was in and out throughout the game getting beat up. Apparently last season his ankle was an issue all season. Now his back has been a problem all camp

Sounds like theyre just being cautious with him and want to get it right. No reason to stress a veteran in practice.

Oh we have heard that talk before and then find out in the following March that he ended up needing surgery.

He may not miss time. But whenever I hear "back issues" I start getting concerned.

non football related injury, if the fo finds out he hurt himself playing BB with friends they could void his contract according to comments made a month ago in this forum.

I hate hearing about back problems to, they always seem to end up worse then first reported, seems once you bulge up a disc, pinch a nerve, it's just a matter of time till the injury gets worse, Z was so dominate 2 years ago, he will be sorely missed if we lose him
