In 2020, 11 of the top 20 punters by yards per punt went undrafted.
Same in 2019.
10 out of 20 in 2018.
8 out of 20 in 2017.
7 out of 20 in 2016.
8 out of 20 in 2015.
9 out of 20 in 2014.
7 out of 20 in 2013.
8 out of 20 in 2012.
9 out of 20 in 2011.
What is the average rate of drafted/undrafted punters?
2021 has 4 rookie punters punting, all undrafted.
2020 6 rookies, 4 undrafted.
2019 6 rookies, 4 undrafted.
2018 8 rookies, 4 undrafted.
2017, 4 rookies, all undrafted.
2016, 5 rookies, 2 undrafted.
2015, 4 rookies, 3 undrafted.

Sorry, meant actively playing.
Wondering if drafted players have a better chance of being 'good' than undrafted.
i.e., looks like roughly 45% of top 20 kickers were undrafted. But is the league average like 30% or 70% undrafted? Or somewhere in between.

I can go back farther if you like.

Think of it this way. Would you rather pay $5 for a burger that has an equal chance of being good or disgusting or would you rather get it for free?
And the way I am thinking of it, (I mean I'm still poor now so but you will know what I mean....)
If I have a great burger, I won't get all twisted on if the chef charged me $5 or $6 because the burger was really good and the cost difference is minor.
JK was a waste of $6 because it was a sh*tty burger.
Bojo is $6 well spent because it's a good burger. Even if there is supposedly another restaruant in town (though unknown) that serves the same delicious for burger for $5.
If you have the great burger already, sure. But what if you don't know if it will be great or not. That's the issue with spending a 5th on a punter, you don't know if they will be good and you have just as good of odds with a free agent.
Swapping a 6th for a 7th for Bojo is not a bad deal at all. Scott in the 5th was a bad deal mostly because he was bad, but it was bad value too. If he was good, no one would really care about the bad value. It was just an unnecessary amount to spend though.
For the most part I can agree with that. And I think you and I are of the same mind in the end. I get where you're coming from for sure.
I too agree that a 5th was too early (unless he turned out top 3 punter), but the overall value of 5th and especially 6th and 7th rounders are pretty low that in the end if I get a good player I won't be complaining about draft capital to get it. I'm just happy we got Bojo and it seems we may finally have a punter.

Yes, but he used a draft pick to get him. I've been told that's a no-no for a punter, no matter what.
yes draft picks should only be used on guys like Brown or Moore, or the dozen crappy DB's we've taken over the years
thing is good kickers and punters provide production that changes the outcomes of games, so spending a pick on one makes sense to me.

Ehh. I mean I get not wanting to draft one or trade for one. I believe if you want a good kicker or punter more than likely you gotta pay a price. They can be found off the street but it’s becoming less likely. I think though if you’re going to pay the price for a punter he better be worth it which is why Scott was such a terrible pick and this move is a good one.
Yup.
I'd rather spend a 5th/6th and get Bojo then minimum UDFA and get what we had.
At the end of the day, I just want good players.
For the record, my post was sarcasm. I'm all for using a pick on special teamers if needed.

Sometimes, even at positions as devalued as punter, it just takes a smart football player to make the whole thing go.

Should have been ejected with 15 yards of penalty. That was inexcusable

Glad they got Alexander though. Can't have that sh*t in the game.
Like the inconsistency is just maddening.

Not a good stat but not irrelevant, Packers D 6th in yards allowed right now.

If we ignore the Saints game, a big if, I know, they are 9th in points per game.

I think it's fair to view it in the middle because the 49ers in my mind didn't earn their 28 points either.

I don't know who started it (it is sounding like Racheal Hopmayer at the moment) but I like the nickname Bojo Blast.

Gary, now a full-time player in his third season, has a team-high 16 pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. He’s produced at least three pressures in all four games, and he’s one of only seven edge rushers with at least 15 total pressures and six quarterback hits.
