Rushing the passer with 5 is considering blitzing.
No one mentioned Joe Barry or his job.

As an aside, the play where the DB fell on Watson and they said "legs got tangled up" ... no, that's 1000% PI.

bs, in that sense rushing 5 from a base front is blitzing, blitzing is a off the LOS rusher

This is going to be one of those things where everyone on the forum agrees blitzing is defined as 5 or more pass rushers and yoop just digs in his heels and accuses the rest of us of sticking up for the front office at every turn or something unrelated.

I know when a defense sends 5 it's considered blitzing, why do I have to agree to something that really doesn't define a blitzer though? when a defense rushes 5 and there all on the los who's the blitzer? we easily know who the blitzer is though when they pinch up from lber level.
in that sense I've never agreed with the idea that just sending 5 from the LOS is blitzing, imo it's just a 5 man rush package
what does our FO have to do with any of this

maybe he wont believe such a simple minded explanation for what blitzing actually is, if ya want to call a 5 man rush package blitzing then tell me who was the blitzer, which of those 5 guys on the LOS blitzed?

Well sure, if you want to talk about a blitzer and what a blitzer is, that certainly could be a lot more ambiguous.
But again, that wasn't the original conversation, it was 'blitzing'. Don't think we can connect all those dots.

It doesn't matter who the Blitzer is. It's blitzing. If a DE in a 4-3 drops and one of the linebackers rushes the passer, is it blitzing? No.

If five are blitzing, then all five are blitzers. The word comes (I believe) from the German blitzkrieg in WW2, and even it that case it wouldn't be accurate to say that some of the tropps were blitzing and others weren't. They all blitzed.

when my coach said we are blitzing so and so, that player was not anyone on the DL, and was a off ball player, when he said we will stunt so and so, same thing.
I find it lazy, and non de script to just say a team blitzed when all they did was rush 5, when all 5 where on the ball.
again on Owens fumble pick up and score we rushed 5 Dl that where on the LOS, then blitzed Walker from off the LOS, so what do ya want to call that? a double blitz.

A "blitz" or "blitzer" was always used to denote someone off the line who was sent to rush the QB or a predetermined run hole on a "run" blitz.
It was a break from the normal LOS defenders or the read and react of the linebackers.

A 6 man blitz... 5+ pass rushers is a blitz. It's a common terminology.

A blitz is anything more than 4. This isnt hard.

if you have a base 3 DL and 2 OLB's who are on the LOS it is not a blitz. It has nothing to do with the "number" and everything to do with alignment and where people come from.

exactly, but because sports writers and and bloggers think it's easier to just call it a blitz when 5 rush, football fans do as well, there lost without writers and bloggers.

these people get a Woody disagreeing with me MS
for the whole history of the NFL we watched as off ball players rushed the QB and they where referred to as a blitzer

Yes, but Yoop's confusion is kinda understandable.
Blitz is the term for any
pass rush scheme featuring more than 4 pass rushers. It doesn't matter what positions, body types, etc. the pass rushers are. If you are pass rushing and there are more than 4 players doing it, it's a blitz.
Where you get into ambiguous ground is, for example, on early downs when you don't know if it's pass or run.
If the opposing team tries to pass on an early down, it may look like we are rushing 5, even if our intention had been to use 5 defenders against the run. That is not a blitz. The play call was not to rush the passer with 5+ rushers, it just happened.

Calm down guys.
The definition of a blitz is sending more than 4 rushers to the passer. That is the base definition.
Coaches and stat guys have also acknolwedged that 3-4 teams as a rule "blitz more" because of the base alignment of 3 down linemen and 2 edge rushers equals 5 even though it's the base package.
Both are true. We can all acknowledge everyone is right.
