from The Athletic

"Cornerback Stephon Gilmore had piqued the interest of the Carolina Panthers for quite some time.
On Tuesday night, he appeared like a more tangible target. And by lunchtime Wednesday, Gilmore was heading to his hometown team.

...by Wednesday morning, the entire league recognized Gilmore would be released by 4 p.m. ET if the Patriots couldn’t find a trade partner.
Panthers director of player personnel Pat Stewart, who worked for the Patriots from 2007-17, remained in contact with Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler to stay on top of the situation.

Now that Gilmore is a Panther, there are two more orders of business in the imminent future. First, Gilmore will take his physical Thursday, and all signs point toward him passing the exam...but giving him an extension before the physical would be problematic

...the Panthers’ intention is to sign Gilmore to a contract extension, but there’s no rush to do so. They know it won’t be cheap, so they want to make sure Gilmore looks like himself upon his return. His debut against the Giants would be 10 months removed from his last game. The Panthers also have a few extensions to handle in the meantime.

But Gilmore will report to the Panthers and won’t demand a new contract before suiting up. Before signing an extension, he also wants to make sure the defensive fit is as strong as it appears on paper, and that takes time, too. It’s conceivable the extension discussions don’t occur until after the season, even though the Panthers hope to keep him for the long term.

There’s a community impact as well. Gilmore and his family live in a Charlotte suburb in the same neighborhood as GM Fitterer and assistant general manager Dan Morgan, and Gilmore’s family has very strong ties to the area.

Gilmore also grew up in Rock Hill, S.C., where the Panthers are building their new team headquarters. Gilmore could become a face of the franchise both on and off the field."

And there you have it. Hometown team with the intention of signing him to a contract extension. Panthers with $30 million in 2022 cap space, Packers with -$36 million. So it looks like all the hand wringing and torch lighting was for naught.

Doesnt imply hes been given anykind of gurantee that he will get one. Just says they want to give him one if he does not look like a bum. All 32 teams would probably agree that if he looks great they would sign him to an extension.

But not all 32 NFL teams are in the cap position to give him one.

makes sense, I said as much yesterday, I also think the extension will come sooner then later, in fact I think within a month or so.

the media hyped up our mild interest, I doubt we where any more serious then just investigating this situation.

What I find interesting is which of the 3 QBs ended up being the best?

I think Rivers is the best actual QB. Roethlesberger has the 2 rings and more consistency. And Manning had 6 good games in his life.

I say they all lost.

They could have gotten Aaron in 2005.

Charges came away with Phillip Rivers, Nate Kaeding and Shawne Merriman with the Manning picks.

Giants somehow got their two Super Bowls, but they could have been a dynasty if throw Merriman onto that D.

Given the actual matchups, this has to be the most absurd, NFC East-biased TV coverage map imaginable (not to mention two red-uniformed teams are depicted in blue while two blue-uniformed teams are pictured in red)

The Lions Lion'd again... took the lead with under a minute and let the Vikes into FG territory to lose it.

4 games going on right now:

a 2-2 team leads a 3-1 team by 5
a 4-0 team leads a 2-2 team by 3
Two 3-1 teams in a 7-point shootout
a 3-1 team beating a 1-3 team by 14

Guess which one is televised.

Sot he Bears are gonna beat the Raiders?

Kadarius Toney is having a gumby spiderman kind of game but also likely just got himself ejected by punching a guy after the play?

The Chargers and Browns are playing like we expect the Cheifs-Bills to go? But Chargers gotta Charger and missed the latest game-tying XP?

What a weird day.

I think I heard the announcer say during the Bears-Raiders game there were 11 missed PAT tries today. That’s just amazing. It’s far from a gimme point anymore.

Pre-draft stuff you just can't see unless it is talked to death. There is no way this guy was even on our board. Just seems like a super turd 5 games into his rookie season.
