The cornerback position is one of the weakest in nfl without Jaire.

We traded away a quality corner last year

We did not make a move for a corner after knowing Jaire was dinged up before the deadline

Not making a move for a corner at the deadline May cost the team a Super Bowl as we get diced up in the playoffs with limited pass rush to help the corners

Criminal negligence by the one we aren’t allowed to criticize around here…Gutebumst
I agree moves have weakened our cornerback position especially with Jaire being banged up but did you truly believe at the beginning of this season this was a Super Bowl caliber team? I felt we were a playoff team but we still have holes to fill to be able to win this division let alone the conference. We have defensive issues and are too inconsistent on offense to contend for a championship this year. I don't think we are too far away however.
Do I think this team is a contender?

Certainly if the $55m plays like a 55m qb.

Armchair QBing with hindsight as his crutch. It’s easy to quibble over what might have been and unfortunately some posters relish in it. It’s an easier game to play as a fan when you hedge your bets for coming up short, as 31 teams do every single year.

damn straight it is, and our corners suck big time, and it doesn't matter if they're in zone or man.

I wont pay for PFF, which would allow more exposure to just how bad, however, they allowed us to see advanced coverage grades through week 7, advanced exposes separation on every coverage route, our best ranked #43 with Alexander, Nixon next at #62, and stokes with a ranking of #94 out of 100 with at least 25 snaps

I don't know how or why anyone would defend this, sure great pass rush helps these turds look better, but Advanced coverage stats don't give a holler about the pass rush, they grade these player s whether the ball is thrown in their direction, or not, it's why any o dip stick QB with a few competent receiver options and good pass pro OL can torch our secondary.

your right, you and some of us others have pointed this out all year.

and we should have scoured the market for CB help prior to trade deadline, and we shouldn't have traded Douglas last year, that trade made absolutely zero sense at all, yet folks here defend that idiocy :thwap:

What are you on about? The only person who defends the Douglas trade, to my knowledge, is Lupe, who's not even a fan of the GM. Pretty much everyone else on this board regrets it, and a lot of people here wanted us to add a CB high in last year's draft, like DeJean.

If criticism of the GM wasn't allowed, they would censor the viewpoint or ban users for expressing it, neither of which they did. The fact it's unpopular doesn't not mean it's "not allowed" either. If you're not being censored or banned, then it's actually your failure to persuade, or reality not bearing out what you're saying.

Playing without Jaire is not a death sentence. Good grief. Valentine isn't elite, but neither is he bad. More often than not, he actually has good coverage.

Packers by 9.

Valentine isn't even listed in the top 100, can't tackle to save his life, and Lupe wasn't the only one to defend trading Douglas.

the only way for us to beat a top offense is with pass rush, and it requires a 5 man rush group :idn:

and calling out folks who simply are trying to point out obvious issues, telling others to ignore his post, what kind of rant is that?

Every forum needs contradictions and differing points of view. DR J, like others, can be overly negative at times. Heck, we're all guilty of that.

simple fact is we suck in the red zone, same on 3rd down offensively, and defensively we can't cover near as well as we need to, take X out of the equation and we may not even be a 500 team, :idn:
now, I would always agree with the premise that any football player who is invited to the NFL is the cream of the college crop, but the requirements to be a starter are very steep at this level, and we only have one, and he's been hurt far to often.

what about trading P Smith, maybe 1 or 2 others prior to the draft, or maybe a draft pick? Guty stood pat, I guess hoping to get DEjean or another in that class, then did nothing prior to the deadline, some of us saw and expected

personally, I like a lot of stuff Guty has done, X and Jacobs are great acquisitions, and he's drafted some good players, but CB is a key position with any defense.

Lupe is not the only one. I had no issue with the Douglas trade, and thought the return was good for a guy who is in reality a mediocre (66.1 on PFF) corner. The failure to adequately replace him is a separate issue, however.

Speaking of the Packers- 49ers game...

Here's an article from The Ringer talking about what's wrong ( many facets) with the Shanahan offense in 2024

https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2024/11/2 ... rock-purdy

"For now, Shanahan is throwing everything he can at the 49ers’ problems, but his good answers haven’t been good enough. The season is hanging in the balance. If this team is going to drag itself back into NFC contention and quiet the noise about its ability to finish games, Shanahan will have to call upon the best play calling of his career. Anything less will be insufficient."

Fortunately, Brandon Allen isn't big, strong and fast like Malik

Any other roster? Really? I like our team and we have talent but I just don't feel we are a SB caliber team - yet. I was responding to Drj who suggested because we didn't address the cornerback position at the trade deadline that cost our SB chances, that's all.
Show me a fanbase who don't think their team's roster has holes to fill or who play as consistently good as fans like.

I think it's completely fair to criticize Guty on this, tho I'd remind that he DID manage to fix the safeties and the slot in one fell swoop, so it's not like he ignored the secondary this off-season. The injuries of Jaire, the regression of Stokes and lack of leveling up by other have left the boundary weakish.

As evidenced by the Malik trade, Guty's not against trading for players when there's a need, so I suspect there were no good value trades for starting level corners available. I will never blame a GM for not doing desperation overpays for need. Our window is just creaking open, it's not all-in time yet.

Niners are gonna come out hungry and try to save their season. I see this game as a measuring stick for the packers. Defeat the niners and put the nail in their coffin is something a good team would do.

Lose to the niners and might see them in playoffs…something a mid level wildcard team might do

I don't think it's all that different than the Bears game, although I would argue we might have more similarities to the Bears in terms of the '9ers owning us. There is no love lost between these teams. Pretty even on paper, but we have the home field. That hasn't mattered much in January, but we will see if it helps in November.
