Packers Defense - 2024

Here are some things to know about man and zone coverage in the NFL:
Man coverage: Defenders are responsible for covering specific receivers.
Zone coverage: Defenders are responsible for covering areas of the field, not specific receivers.
Cover 4: A zone coverage that can turn into a man situation on deep routes.
Cover 1: A man-to-man coverage that's often used on third down.
Combo coverage: A coverage where one side of the field uses one coverage and the other side uses another coverage.
Cover 2: A zone defense where the field is divided into five underneath zones and two deep zones.
Each type of coverage has its own strengths and weaknesses, and requires different skills from the players.
quick grab from goofle with several different coverage schemes ( most of us already know this stuff, just wanted to point out combo coverages)
the combo coverage gives us zone, with Alex still following Jefferson in man, Hafley seems well aware of how well Alex has done against Jefferson in man, and how Jefferson destroyed us in Barry's zones.
actually I think Hafley and Alexander are looking forward to this matchup.

Through 4 games, Hafley has been worse than Barry, which is sort of inexplicable. Obviously very early, a lot of time to get turned around. But I'd rather be clearly better after 4 games than clearly worse.
I'm convinced that defensive coordinators are to the Packers what quarterbacks are to the Bears.

I think it's clear that the Vikes' Offense had it's way in the first half. They seemed to dominate the LOS and that made the biggest difference. That enabled them to "stay ahead of the sticks." The second half saw our D play with more intensity.
McKinney could've had a 2nd INT but I think he never saw the ball. He certainly showed the range to the sideline and normally would've made a play on the ball.
Nixon is a good blitzer if he isn't anything else.
Jaire is clearly our best CB and it mattered to lack him today. Stokes does some things well. But he still needs to improve coverage.
With all the draft picks we've put into our defense, it still seems like we have too many over-achieving JAGs. We certainly don't have an elite defense, but perhaps that can still change as the season progresses.
I'm glad we still have Kenny Clark. But somebody show me the value we get for the contract we are paying him.
Bullock and Cooper both are flashing really well. As they gain experience, I'm excited for what they might bring.

By any objective measure, the BEST defensive player on the Green Bay Packers through 4 games is Xavier McKinney.
I don't think it is any coincidence McKinney was NOT DRAFTED by nor COACHED BY the Green Bay Packers prior to the 2024 seasons.
We just have no clue how to draft, develop, scheme, coach up, whatever you want to call it, defensive players.
Gary, Wyatt, LVN, Clark, Walker, Stokes all first round picks, compared to Minnesota's group and we were outclassed. Again.
This is not just on Hafley or Dom or Barry at this point. The ORGANIZATION has failed and continues to fail.

I have said this repeatedly. At some point fans need to stop blaming the coaches.
Cancelled by the forum elites.

Packers currently ranked 20th in the NFL giving up 22.3 points per game.
My biggest concern up to this point is our lack of push from our front 4. Outside of 2 quarters vs TEN, our front 4 have gotten beaten in every game.
This is the most concerning storyline of the 2024 season for the first four games.

its hard to defend jefferson, a jones, and addison when your top two corners are out.
We needed to be sharper on O.
We were not...
and yet, if we just had a kicker we would be 4-0
how many times have I said the ST is going to cost us? well its cost us two games out of 4 already...how many more in the future?

Is it still taboo to criticize Gary around here? We paid him the big bucks, can we start to be honest about him now?

Yes, in terms of pressure rates Gary is average (actually slightly below average) and the others are way below average. Gary is no where near his pre-contract pressure rate. And everyone else just plain stinks.
we have a nascar DL, when 280+ go against 310 lb + OL one on one there already at a disadvantage, plus when allowed to hold the OL will win that match 9 out of 10 times, which I've seen often against our rushers, our DL need to play with heavier hands, knock those OL hands off, I'am not seeing much of that, jmo
minus Alexander and Valentine = loss, little better pass rush and we may have pulled out a win.Drj820 wrote: ↑30 Sep 2024 09:37its hard to defend jefferson, a jones, and addison when your top two corners are out.

they forced us to pass to win, and we almost did it, we depend on fast starts to make the other team one dimensional, backfired on us.

Our DEs are not undersized.
This group simply needs to step it up especially Clark and Gary.

I expected more than I i've seen from Gary. He hasn't been non existent, he's had plays or opened others for plays at times, but nowhere near enough. Not even close. I thought first couple weeks, maybe with running qb's temps etc ok. But I need to see more, and soon.
We had squat for pressure yesterday, rushed 4 a lot leaving plenty back in coverage and they were still running wide open much of the day.
I'd say the results are more mixed than the same so far. Brazil and yesterday didn't look good.
The Indy and TN games looked really good.
I'm willing to give it the year and see where we end up. The takeaways are really nice too.

Packers forever have refused to give third contracts to positions that arent QB. The last two appear to be the reason why...Bakh and now Kenny Clark.
Slayton has become a ghost in this scheme.
Gotta remember about Gary...it took the dummy 3 years to learn how to play standing up...might take a couple more years for him to remember how to play with his hand in the dirt

Pretty sure everybody on this forum saw this train wreck coming, Nostradamus. The only difference being many here held some level of hope or optimism for Narveson to do well and to allow this struggle to actually play out before calling it an abject failure. That, as opposed to, you know, declaring it a failure before a single kick was ever attempted.
