That an NFL owner was advocating tanking with financial incentive is a huge problem for the NFL, given the amount of public $$$ they are on the take for, from tax breaks to free stadiums.
This is going to be a rough offseason(s) for the NFL.
It is worse than that even. Said owner was investing in a sportsbook...

Gonna bite my tongue on this one until more details emerge, if they do. But from what I've read about the story so far, I don't see how any conclusions can be drawn re: there was racism/there wasn't racism. We need more details to conclude that racism played a factor in the Flores situation, from what I've read.
I don't know that I can root for the NFL owners or Ross (who I don't particularly care for), but I am definitely rooting against Flores. I hope they destroy that piece of &%$@. The NFL panders to minorities constantly and yet it's never good enough for people like Flores.
Shame that he has to bring up good guys like Dungy and Jim Caldwell and involve them in his nonsense. Curious to see how racism forced him to bench Ryan Fitzpatrick while they were winning and looking like a decent playoff team with a solid QB. Also curious to see how systemic injustice prevented him from being able to beat teams other than the Jets, Giants, Jaguars, and Texans.
Like most things, complicated litigation and civil cases are best to not be judged by the population at large; especially before trial when the evidence comes out.
We have such limited information to make any reasonable judgement but unfortunately your mind is already made up based on bias from reading of a couple of tweets.
People always make fun of the "McDonald's coffee lawsuit" until they actually see pictures of the burns and hear the medical situation after the incident. I usually hear, "I never knew it was that bad" or something like that when see them and hear personal testimonial.
It's the boring answer. It's the "terrible for TV and politics answer". But I always believe the best answer is, "I will reserve judgment until I hear more information"
And by and large we will never get enough information ourselves to make a judgement because we have our own lives and don't have time to get enough information on other things that really don't pertain to us. Which sounds boring and incomplete, but perhaps the best thing is for society at large to not have judgements on these things, or at least keep an open mind that there are probably things we don't know to have the humility we likely can't make a proper judgement.
And yes. I know I would never win a political campaign with that strategy. People need answers now. Even if it's wrong. Because they will forget about the wrong answer next week when a new thing comes up.
Well, I should have put it in the podium after re-reading it.
I pretty much agree with your entire post (I too had the same experience judging the McDonald's lawsuit). Except I would say my mind is not made up regarding the culpability of the NFL (which I specifically noted in order to avoid this). But after having seen the amount of pissing and moaning over the past decade or two over nothing, I have to say my mind is pretty much made up about Flores. I mean, maybe he's in the 1% of cases where it's actually a problem, but I'm hardly going out on a limb with my negative assessment of him prior to knowing more details.
But yeah, I'm all ears as to the evidence that will be coming out (knowing that both sides are going to try and smear the other so it will be hard to actually discern truth, from our standpoint).
Here's the thing, I do believe it's a federal felony to conspire to fix a sporting event. So, if true, the feds will be looking at this, screw the NFL investigation. They won't be able to stop the feds.
Oh look what I found.
Stephen Ross, Jimmy Haslam could be prosecuted for violating the Sports Bribery Act.
The Sports Bribery Act criminalizes such conduct. Under 18 U.S.C. § 224, “Whoever carries into effect, attempts to carry into effect, or conspires with any other person to carry into effect any scheme in commence to influence, in any way, by bribery any sporting contest, with knowledge of the purpose of such scheme is to influence by bribery that contests, shall be fined under this title, or imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both.”

Which is kind of silly because everyone knows it happens. Like why would they not tank?

The tanking isn't the issue. The bribing is.
So the issue would be the conspiracy as opposed to the actual match fixing?

From an actually against the law standpoint, yes. If they just all tanked together as a happy family, no one would care. We know it happens. But can't rock the boat.
I admit the Packers are a shinning example of league discrimination, obviously Rhodes seemed unqualified, but most teams are the same way
nothing much has changed the last 20 years.
The gains have since diminished, though, and the number of Black head coaches at the start of the 2021 season, three, was the same as in 2003.Jan 21, 2022
Um, take a visit to realityville for a second. Rhodes was black. His OC was black. His DC was black. To say the Packer org was discriminating because they fired the (less than successful) coaches is to ignore that the Packers HIRED the coaches in the first place.
two minority HC's in 100 years, is on par with most NFL teams, 70% of the players are of a minority race, less then 5% are HC's.
the Rhodes hire went over like a fart in church, he was doomed to be a one year HC before he was even hired Scott, at least that was my perception of that situation.
Perceptions are great. But they don't indicate what the whole story is. Rhodes was HC. That is a fact. He was hired by the Packers, even at a time when such a thing wasn't common in the NFL. That is a fact. He didn't perform up to expectations. That is a fact (just ask the PackerNation.) Even while he was fired, the fact remains that he still had the opportunity in Green Bay, while most other teams hadn't indulged "minorities". So, if the convo was about the Pack being racially problematic because they hired or fired Rhodes, that's just off base. And if you or anybody want to compare this situation to all the other teams who've never hired a black coach, I just think that's apples and oranges. There's enough low-hanging fruit for other teams. If you want to call the Packers a "shining example" that's just off base, or at best, in the noise.
I admit the Packers are a shinning example of league discrimination...
The Packers only off-season staff firing has been Mo Drayton. He's black. Packers are racist organization.
<sigh>
I mean, seriously. That's how dumbed down some of these arguments seem to be. Complex circumstances whittled down to overly simplistic assumptions. It's exhausting just reading some of it.

the thing about tanking is if the tanking earned the dolphins a justin herbert instead of a tua...i bet most fans would be thrilled they traded an awful couple of years for a career with Herbert.
And you can tank all ya want, you just have to be able to have plausible deniability.
Paying out 100k nukes plausible deniability and is just stupid. The way to go would be to guarantee the contract fully, or tack on another year so that the coach can be assured he wont be fired for his record and will be able to earn at least a full contract or extra year worth of hefty salary.
Ross just sounds like an idiot. And honestly so does Flores.

BTW it's official.
The Washington Commanders. Overall sounds like Washington fans aren't too happy.
Honestly with everything that is wrong with that organization, I think it would be totally fine for fans to swtich colors and root for another team. I feel bad for them. Everything about their ownership and management sucks.
I actually like their football operations. But everything else is just so, so bad.
I will without question say the absolute worst stadium I have ever been to is FedEx Field. And I thought this before I had biases of the horrible things that have happened there since 2016.

The Commanders, Patriots and 49ers are the only team names with more than 2 syllables. At least you can say "Pats" and "9ers"
There is really no way to shorten the Commanders. Even Admirals you could say, "Ad-Mrals" to shorten it to two syllables.
WarHogs and Admirals would have been better names.
That's what rivals will call them to make fun of them.
But the name makes no sense. Commander and Commie aren't even close to the same thing. It's a jeer. It's like the clever 12 year old calling them the ViQueens.
That's what rivals will call them to make fun of them.
I think it's more than that. I think you are absolutely right on the 2-syllable thing. It's natural human laziness and there isn't a better alternative. When everyone else is doing it, I think even the home team will eventually accept it.

seriously the Packers resemble most NFL teams, we have only had two minority HC's, one African America, and one Native American, and Rhodes was the last 30 plus years ago, you can't tell me there weren't more qualified African American coaches when we hired Mike Sherman, or even Mike McCarthy, or even Matt Lafluer.
Rhodes was our response to the Rooney Rule, why that didn't work out is debatable.
shinning example was a poor choice of wording on my part.
