From Lambeau to Lombardi, Holmgren, McCarthy and LaFleur and from Starr to Favre, Rodgers and now Jordan Love we’re talking Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers football. This Packers Forum is the place to talk NFL football and everything Packers. So, pull up a keyboard, make yourself at home and let’s talk some Packers football.
I know I’ve said this before, but I think he tries to be too calm and he tempers things too much. Where someone like Favre would come out guns blazing and balls getting rifled everywhere his first few passes until he got in the flow of the game, when love has nerves/pressure/uneasy he tries to keep it too calm and it affects his throws in the opposite way.
Once the juice hits him or he just settles in and plays what I think is more natural for him, he starts slinging it.
There is no perfect, not Rodgers, not Favre not Brady etc, but love followed Rodgers who I think by nature is very cool and very deliberate and thoughtful in everything he does. I think Love is trying too much to emulate that when he feels any pressure/nerves etc but it is not him naturally.
And by pressure I don’t mean defensive pressure I mean mentally he feels nerves/pressure. Once he stops thinking about being cool and calm and everything is fine and just plays it seems to all be better.
Are you sure it's unnatural? Did he carry the same demeanor prior to backing up Rodgers, i.e. in college?
I honestly don't know. Didn't catch too many Utah St college games.

No, I don't. It could be maybe naturally he is too relaxed for me. I was going to add that part up top too, but I figured I'm too long winded the way it is
Whatever the cause, I just think he needs to feel a bit of juice and he's so much better.

It's a bit tough to really know based on what we see on TV. When I played Tennis in HS and College, I was accused of being too calm but in my head, that wasn't the case at all. Everyone deals with the pressure differently, and wears it on their face differently.

That's kind of what I'm saying in my initial post. I think inside in his head he's feeling it and he's trying to put forward that he's not. Trying to physically show he's not feeling much and it affects how he plays trying to appear too calm. When he has that little bit of pop and step to things he seems to play at a much better level.
and admittedly, I don't know what he's like. I've always been more of a amped up guy during sport so naturally I think that's how most are. and you're right, how it's shown on the outside is different for everyone. I just can't see guys going into a competition feeling like nothing is happening because that wasn't me or anybody I knew. We all got nerves, excitement etc. How we dealt with it was different.
I watched plenty of Love’s last college year tape, and that team had gotten decimated with best talent leaving in the offseason. His Oline was god-awful, bad receivers too. New and bad O system as well. Love had to play hero ball with constant pressure in his face, which led to a ton of ints. It was so bad, you couldn’t evaluate how well he read the field, since if the first read wasn’t open, he’d be under pressure and scrambling, or throwing with someone in his face.
He did show more frustration then, but not the explosive temper tantrums some other QBs in the NFL. Mostly it was “get up, get ready for next play”.
The previous year’s tape was waaaay better, with a decent supporting cast, but I didn’t see much of it.
I think Love is even-keeled by nature, at least on the outside. I think he’s pretty good at not letting a bad play (or a great play) influence him much on the next snap. Does not let one play beat him twice. His INTs don’t seem to come in bunches, rather they’re isolated occurrences. Where he has room to improve is that he gets to a “throw off back foot” - mode and other bad habits if the protection falters.

I remember having this thought in the offseason, wondering if the Dallas game was actually bad for his development. How many of those back foot throws worked out in our favor for big plays. I was a bit afraid he thought he could continue to get away with it. I'm fine with the occasional "OMG WHAT A CRAZY THROW" plays but it definitely seemed like he thought he could just wing it like that all the time in the beginning of the year. And now I'm actually afraid that he's playing it too safe. Hopefully he finds that balance and confidence next year.

Yes on the bad habits
For psychological tests, they aim to put you under duress so that your "true" personality shines through. And getting pressured fits that bill
One of the things Love's coach Steve Calhoun talked about was that Love didn't consistently shift all his weight forward on his plant foot. Often times his front foot would be on the ball of his foot only - instead of firmly planted. Coach Calhoun and MLF both noticed it and along with Tom Clements they really worked on fixing that aspect of his footwork. Left foot down, left foot down...
But when pressured, sometimes that habit comes out again. I suspect he will always have to work on that...
i think part of it is Love, he hasn't been as sharp as he was that stretch to end last year, but I think a lot of it is receivers too. They also aren't what they were. It's like they've all taken a small step backwards. Route running, drops, ball security etc all seems different than the end run last year. It's like they read too many press clippings in the offseason instead of working on their craft or something.
I do think having them all focus on the little things, like a professional will result in big changes for the overall look. They are all clearly very talented and can play at a higher level.

I've wondered what causes the seemingly very common sophomore slump...
Could it be that the whole period from the start of a player's last year in college to the end of their rookie year in the NFL is SO intense and packed with life-changing events, that it's hard to remain focused once the first longer period of free time hits. And you're young and rich, and contractually often pretty much a roster lock. I'd imagine waking up early for routine Juggs machine training can't seem too appetizing...
Entering your third season, suddenly you're working for an extension that can set you up for a long time.
No real conclusion, but I thought it was interesting and on topic given the hand wringing about Jordan's mechanics. My take, and this helps support that, is that QB's need to do whatever works for them.

I agree that QBs need to do whatever works for them, but the argument here is that the mechanical things Jordan is often doing are NOT working for him. At least to the extent of his potential

Right. Anecdotally, if a pass falls incomplete, it's hindering him. I don't believe that to be the case. I have no doubt he needs a few mechanical tweaks to improve his accuracy, but I don't think the throwing off the back foot thing is as big of a deal as others seem to.
Palmy - "Very few have the ability to truly excel regardless of system. For many the system is the difference between being just a guy or an NFL starter. Fact is, everyone is talented at this level."
