The Jets' staff is filed with ex-49ers right now, so they're not going in totally blind, either.
This is a very important point - 49ers don't make that move without some knowledge of what Jets are doing. They can't and won't admit it, but I'm certain there was some pillow talk among close former colleagues

And yet the salary cap has increased how much in the last 10 years?

And the players lost $0 in 2020 when the league and the rest of entertainment revenue dipped significantly?

I'm sorry. But I don't feel that much sympathy for players here. I do think not having 2 byes along with it is dumb though.

I’m actually a big Justin Fields fan, but goodness Texas.

I do agree it’s a dumb move, horrible move really. Give up three first round picks to just get a QB. Not even sure which. That is scary dumb, imo.
Nah these big program QBs who get ranked high solely on stats and wins always flop. The only one who didn't is Joe Burrow (yet). I used this same reason to DQ Mayfield, Darnold, and Haskins and I have been correct on all of them because they all suck. And so will Fields. And Mac Jones.
While I agree that mere stats and wins don't mean that a big program QB is any good, meaning you need to watch the film carefully to evaluate them, it's pretty weird to claim Fields and Mac aren't any good without watching any film. Does not compute. :dunno:

A great supporting cast can hide a bad QB, but it also can hide a good one. For example a guy who is great at avoiding sacks and throwing when pressured may not get opportunities to show it, if he has an amazing oline and weapons.

I personally like college QBs who have faced some adversity, but don't think being on bad teams to be an absolute prerequisite.
This is objectively true, but in lieu of spending the time watching them, my shortcut has proven pretty accurate. QB at a big name powerhouse school with a supporting cast consisting entirely of 5* WRs, OL, and RBs? You mean to tell me he's also known for his athleticism and running ability? High completion percentage too? Spare me the details, he's a bust.

On that note, Trevor Lawrence has some bust potential too. He may be a special case though like Burrow also might be.

Given that I only watch the NFL, I support two 16 game seasons with a month off in between.... 8-)

He will probably be a fine QB after a year away from Chicago. Bring in the next QB for Da Bears to ruin.

Guess the Jets are going QB, they traded Darnold to the Panthers.
The Jets are reportedly getting a sixth-round pick in 2021 and a second-round pick and fourth-round pick in 2022 out of the deal.

Kind of dumb by the Panthers, IMO. Likely gunna be a good 2nd next year.

Darnold has a 9M cap hit this year and has the option (I would imagine will be picked up) next year. 18.9 million estimate.

Bridgewater costs 23 on the cap this year, would be 26 million next year, guessing he won’t be around next year, $5 million in dead cap.

So the Panthers are looking at cap hits of $31 million this year and about $24 million next year, now they don’t have a 2022 2nd (or 4th) or a QB worth being on the roster in 2023.

Opinions vary...We really don't know yet who or what Darnold is - nobody could have excelled in that environment and certainly not a young guy like Darnold. The Panthers were really aiming for Watson and then got thrown for a loop. While they were recovering, SF moved up to number 3. That left the Panthers shut out of the QB sweepstakes for 2021 because pick 4 is ATL and they're not trading with Carolina. Its a small price to pay to find out if a guy who was considered a franchise QB by many teams - can become one. If not, they'll come back and try again next year.

On the contract side, OTC says $20M of the $30M stays with Jets and Darnold is only a $ 5M cap hit for this year. see link

Funny how guys like Kamara forget they voted on the last CBA and the option for this was in that agreement.

Never liked Darnold. I always felt like he had a bunch of average traits to fall back on. Not really a strong arm. No elite accuracy. Not very athletic. His processing is ok and only looks worse after the seeing ghosts incident.

That being said the Jets were about the worse team in terms of offensive talent since he got there. The Panthers have weapons for him to succeed but I think they gave up too much. Darnold to me at this point was worth a 3rd and that’s it.

Don’t quite agree, a 2, 4 and a 6 is not a small price to pay to see if a bust QB still has something at not an insignificant salary. I’d rather try Biscky at $3 million than trade that for Darnold. 90% chance your gunna realize you need a new QB next year, now you have neither the cap space nor draft picks to do anything about it.

The cap space is only $ 5 million per OTC and his 2021 salary is only $920K ( they did exercise 5th year option though)
You've described Darnold as a "bust" QB - apparently the Panthers have a different evaluation of him and surely HC Rhule and OC Joe Brady weighed in on the trade. Tepper gave Rhule a 7 year contract, clearly he believes in Rhule and his coaching abilities.

If the Panthers are wrong, trading the 2nd will hurt - but the 4th and 6th play little role IF they need to grab a QB next year.
My two cents is that Darnold is a bridge to buy them time until the Watson legal issues are resolved - that's who they really want.
And all Darnold has to do is be better than Teddy B - that's not a high bar.

In 2019, Sam Darnold had a passer rating of 84.3, his draftmates Baker Mayfield had a 78.8 and Josh Allen an 85.3

They’re picking 8th overall because they don’t really have a good team. They’ve got pieces here and there but they need players. Trading away 3 picks now and then trading another 3 picks for Watson later doesn’t help this team. If anything that puts them on a fast track to be a perpetual one and done playoff team.

Why wouldn’t Teddy Bridgewater be an appropriate bridge guy to Watson? Who was already under contract and did not cost 3 draft picks, all 3 that perhaps could have gone for Watson.

Poor Robbie Anderson finally escaped Darnold now he’s stuck with him again. 😂

They are definitely making a significant investment in Darnold, but I think Bridgewater is the better QB.

I realize Rhule and Tepper are NFL executives, they know more than me, but they just gave out a 60+ million dollar contract to a QB last year and clearly didn’t get it right, why trust them now? I feel like they just maybe moved from a 74 at QB (madden style rating) to a 76. Now they have both, but still don’t have a real QB, and now are short 3 picks. There were better values in FA, imo.

fair enough

Here's a highlight reel; Darnold can spin the ball, some great connections with Robbie Anderson. The throw to Anderson at the 3:35 mark is top notch and as you noted - they'll be re-united in Carolina.

In the first year with a new coach (though the QB had worked with the coach 2 years prior), the Panthers lost almost all their games by one score or less. Any sort of 2nd year system jump (or hop) by Bridgewater would lead to a pretty large W/L swing. Bridgewater still has 2 years left on his contract.

So to me this is a year early. Drafting a guy makes sense, sure, because Teddy can remain the starter and you can groom. But trading for Darnold creates an immediate starter expectation and now you just have 2 QBs who might not be that good, but could get better.

I dunno. If I'm the Panthers, I'm going Teddy TwoGloves and Davis Mills or Kellen Mond on Day Two; maybe Kyle Trask. Give them a year to learn on the bench and see what Teddy can do. If Bridewater improves by a leap, you stick with him one more year. If he stays about the same, you dump him. Darnold feels like that compromise middle ground deal that actually just sticks you in the mediocre middle.
