I don't understand anyone having reactions of negativity in the 5th round and beyond.
I mean, usually I'd say the 6th, but this draft, the 5th.
Like, we're just taking shots. This guy is a guy who plays football and we liked. He's a guy who might play football for us or might not. He's a late-@$$ pick. It's a weak-@$$ draft. The team likes him. He might play QB as a PS guy. Or as a backup guy. Or not at all. Who cares. Maybe good. Maybe nothing. Maybe who cares.

When I watched his highlights it seemed like he has a good feel for the game. He is tough and looks like a Daniel Jones light. Also, I don’t think it’ll take him long to pick up the NFL game.

I talked myself into this one a little bit. This guy gets good reviews on leadership and athleticism. A dual-threat guy who guys rally around is good to have on the bench at QB (but hopefully will not be needed at all). I have a preference for guys more like Aidan O'Connell in that role, but guys like Clifford also work.
Props to Crazylegs on the Matt Flynn reference, he was an example of a guy with nice athleticism off the bench, mediocre arm, but had a lot of moxie, and who guys could rally around.
I expect Etling will hold him off and we stash Clifford on the PS for a year. They seem like very similar players anyway, but he can hopefully become a better version of it.

fans that claim to be able to spot a great QB coming out of college have vast Company, and most couldn't pour pee from a boot with the instructions on the heel ( included for APB delight
) seriously though, there are a lot of late drafted QB's that became HOF pros, Bill Walsh took Montana in the 3rd round and was redeculed for it, same with Jack Vainisi with Bart Starr, my point is under the right coach, and scheme and a lot more guys that bust out would have done better.
Bill Walsh was criticized for selecting Joe Montana with 82nd pick in the 1979 draft.
Montana was selected at the very bottom of the third round, but some thought he was taken far too soon. Worthy of a fifth-rounder, tops.
Also, the 49ers had pretty bad quarterback problems that year. If the 49ers had not been so stupid as to trade their first round pick to Buffalo, they could have gotten a real quarterback, like Jack Thompson.
This is when Walsh dropped his famous quote: "Few men are qualified to evaluate the quarterback position. Fewer still are qualified to coach the position."
Bleacher report wont allow drag and paste, and it's a long article

“You have to listen to your board,” Gutekunst said. “With Sean Clifford today, there was a quarterback run, and a lot of quarterbacks underneath him went, so as we looked at it, we had a number choices up there that were all kind of the same, but there weren’t any quarterbacks after him that we felt strongly about like we did him. That made it easy.”

Aside from his weak vertical, Sean Clifford has almost the exact athletic measurables as DuBose and Wicks

I like my backups to be athletic. Because if in a pinch, an athletic QB should be able to give you a few scores based on athletic ability alone before the defense figures them out.

Yeah, it was a two-pronged post; complimenting Clifford and making fun of DuBose and Wicks, haha
But it really is uncannily similar

“We really liked what he brings to the table,” Gutekunst said Saturday. “Started a lot of games in the Big Ten. Has a lot of experience. Really good athlete. Liked his arm talent. We brought him in for a pre-draft visit and we really liked the makeup of the person.”
LaFleur echoed the evaluation and pointed to Clifford’s intelligence as a defining factor.
“Sean is a guy who is really intelligent,” LaFleur said. “He’s played a lot of games. He’s got some athleticism. He’s a natural thrower. All the things we look for in quarterbacks, he possesses. We had him up here on a 30 visit and went through the meetings with him and were impressed by his football acument and overall intelligence. Looking forward to working with him coming rookie minicamp.”

Hey. I've seen Allen Lazard be the primary "end around" guy on 3rd and 4th and 1's.
I think I can handle a Wicks and DuBose be a bigger and less atheltic #4 - #7 WR.

We don't need Clifford to be great we need him to be serviceable for a game or two. If your starter goes down for a majority of games, very few teams survive that. The 49ers last year were the exception, not the rule.
I love the Flynn comparison, get a smart guy who played a lot of games and can run the offense efficiently. And actually Etling maybe even better at it than Clifford. Good competition there for backup QB.
