Green Bay is a silly place for the NFL to host the draft
It's also a silly place for an NFL team. And Canton, OH is a silly place to put the NFL Hall of Fame and host a preseason game every year, yet rich football football history finds a way.
Not silly at all. Quintessential instead :aok:

The league obviously thinks it is a silly place to host the draft. They chose to put it in Detroit over Green Bay.

Ahhhhhhh

wasn't so silly according to Paul Brown and George Muggsy Halas, they instigated profit sharing to keep the small town teams afloat, how can anyone call the 2nd oldest team in the league a silly place and why does the weather have to determine where the draft happens, it's not as though it's a outside affair, who cares if it snows

and when it was decided to use Cleveland for the HOF, not only where the Browns a power house organization, it's founder was instrumental in the shaping of the league and also the Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals, where else could lay claim to those kinds of credentials?
Green Bay is a wonderful place for an NFL franchise. Fan owned, almost collegiate feel. Nothing better than historic Lambeau field. I love the cold weather.

Im hearing the Bears will be moving to a dome. We will then be the only NFCN team man enough to handle the elements. This will help when our opponents come visit us.

That said, none of those things make GB a good place to host the draft. Not sure if there even is a place to host it indoors if needed, but beyond that...the league wants 100s of thousands of fans to come and enjoy the experience over multiple days. Green Bay doesn’t even have enough hotels to house everyone on the night before a game. The draft won’t expect people to stay hours away and commute everyday.

Logistically there are just far better locations. I’d rather host a Súper bowl than the draft. The draft really isn’t even that historic of a thing to host..for decades it was just in New York.

Good for the local economy? Sure. But it’s good for anyone’s economy. It just doesn’t make much sense.

I like your thought on how rich history finds a way. I just really don’t think it means that much, outside of the economy boost. I mean if the draft was tied to history, Nashville as Vegas wouldn’t already be hosts.

It’s about money $$$$$, and Green Bay is a poor location to capitalize on money, and hard to get to for fans and etc etc

In its current form the NFL Draft is nothing more than an overblown media event designed to line the pockets of the NFL. I prefer the old way of holding the NFL draft. Just draft 'em, and put the list in the next day's morning newspaper sports page.

Same goes for the Pro Bowl and NFL Honors show.

The NFL has lost its way. Gone are the days of players getting all muddy and wearing sewn jerseys. GO PACK GO!!

Believing it is silly to hold the draft in Green Bay shows a TON of ignorance, most likely stemming from a lack of experience at Lambeau. It would be the perfect site for at least 1 draft. Countless times have I heard fans of other teams talk about how it was a life long dream to make it to Green Bay. This would be a chance for many fans to do that. It's a wonderful idea as long as the infrastructure can handle it. Thanks to Murphy, it might be able to.

One can literally go to Lambeau at any time. They give tours, have a HOF to visit, pro shop. All great things to enjoy btw.

One also has a minimum of 8 opportunities a year to see a game at Lambeau live. Tickets can be found at stub hub dot com for any event held at Lambeau, including Packer games, Soccer Games, and college football.

If one considers visiting Lambeau a lifelong dream, I suggest they go for a game..but if they can’t do that, they can literally go whenever they want.

Green Bay doesn’t have the infrastructure and it’s a logistical nightmare considering the size of the airport and the distance from major airports.

BFs historical argument is a good one, but the draft just isn’t that historical of an event. It was in NY for decades. One location. Since then it’s been in places near airports, with tons of hotels, that the NFL can make money off of.

Take the Green and Gold glasses off and you will see about 28 other locations make more sense than GB to host a draft.

Milwaukee could host it .............. and they could run busses up and down Hwy 43 for those that wanted to visit or stay in Titletown. Probably a dumb idea, but an idea nonetheless. :packers:

I rebel against the dollar controlling so much of our lives and everything else, if all the nfl cares about is money and profits then I can't see it as sustainable, because the fan is left out in the cold, who cares if some sports analyst has no bed, or has to drive from Milwaukee because he couldn't book a flight to Austen Strable, what right does the NFL have to discriminate against the smaller city's who's economy's to some degree depend on revenue the team brings to businesses in the town and community? not to mention the fan enjoyment, you know, the people that supported there teams through thick and thin and who made the NFL profitable in the first place, greed is ruining this game.

I tend to agree that while the NFL COULD have the draft in GB (or some GB & Milwaukee combo), there are a lot of places that simply can handle it easier. And since it's now down to a bidding process, it's near impossible for Wisconsin to beat the big cities in this.

From the history angle, it woulda been a cool tribute to hold the draft in GB for the 100 year anniversary. But I think the NFL wants the draft to be about all teams, not just host city's team.

I don't think missing out on hosting the draft is a huge deal, the bigger shame is not being in consideration for the SB.

Completely agree. I know p23 implied i was ignorant, but his main argument was that people have wanted their whole life to see Lambeau field. To that I would just comment:

If people have a lifelong dream to go to Lambeau and they haven’t ever actually made the trek, it just shows how much work it takes to get there. The nfl doesn’t want that much work involved to attend its draft.

Vegas has 600,000 people at their draft over 3 days. People stayed in hotels in Vegas. Hotels in GB would be around 2000 a night probably and people would be staying in Milwaukee or even Chicago and commuting. If the NFL wants to honor GB, great. And I don’t blame Murphy at all for pitching GB for the draft. If he lands it, I will say build the man a statue!! It’s his job to go for it and he’s done his job well.

But from the NFLs position, and their desire to get as many people to the draft as possible, in order to do that it needs to be easy on fans to attend. GB is awesome, but the opposite.

It’s in the interest of the fan to put the draft somewhere that has tons of hotel options, cheaper flights to a major city, and no need to rent a car once the fan arrives at the airport of the major city.

If anyone wants to go visit Lambeau, (of which I highly recommend they do), they can do this at any time. No need to for it to be for a draft.

Everything mentioned doesn't make the draft in Green Bay silly, it makes other locations more suitable for it. The interest would be there, as I mentioned, but the logistics aren't as good. Green Bay could handle 300,000 people, which Vegas got, but would really struggle with 600,000 which Nashville brought in. The Super Bowl... That's many years away if the 1 million visitor number is accurate. NFL requires 30,000 rooms whereas Green Bay area has about 10,000. That however would put it in good standing for the Draft. Other than Packer fans, people don't go out of their way to visit Lambeau, even if it is on their bucket list. They wait for a reason, like a game where their favorite team is playing there. The Draft would give another reason for these fans. While it is easier to get to other major cities, it's not hard to get to Green Bay.

It can't just be about fans, and doubt that it is, it's about revenue, and over whelming greed from commercial TV.

GB can easily handle the draft, and most fans don't even wish to go, why should it be a thing that only 200 or 300K attend, why is it that some as yourself want to see record attendance, that benefits only the rich broadcast Co. and a few select city's, while the business owners in the other towns get nothing, doesn't seem fair or logical.

Paul Brown and George Hallas instituted profit sharing to keep the smaller city teams afloat, which actually amounted to keeping those small city's afloat, guess none of that matters any more.

Exactly. The NFL could limit the number of attendees if they wanted to to make any location possible. They won't do it because it would reduce their precious profit margin.

NFL: "Yeah, tell them to go $%@# themselves"

Thats why it is silly for the NFL to do. It’s silly for a business to not maximize profit. Now, in terms of it being historic and cool...absolutely it would be historic and cool.
