Here's a comment from Anders Carlson on the windy conditions yesterday
“The practice field, it is actually a little more difficult to kick over there because when you get in Lambeau, maybe it’s not as windy,” Carlson said. “The practice field, it’s very open, so the wind coming off the bay or wherever it’s coming from will come in and sometimes it does bounce off"

"Cornerback Jaire Alexander had a vintage Jaire day during Tuesday’s team drills, sticking like white on rice against wide receivers Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks to help force incompletions and sprinkling in his fair share of trash talk elsewhere in practice. Love’s pass to Watson hit the receiver in the hands, but Alexander was so tight on his back that the ball popped loose and Alexander almost picked it off. During an end-of-half scenario, Love looked Alexander’s way before throwing the ball away on the other side of the field. Alexander heckled Love to not look his way and chirped Doubs that he wasn’t open against him. Alexander also let Wicks hear it after Love’s deep ball for the second-year receiver fell incomplete with cornerback Keisean Nixon helping force the incompletion.

"The Packers signed Australian kicker Alex Hale, an undrafted rookie from Oklahoma State. He was the only kicker to attempt field goals at practice, going 5-for-6 with makes from 33, 33, 40, 41 and 44 yards before missing his sixth kick from 45 yards wide right. Hale worked out for the Packers on Tuesday morning — it was his first NFL workout — and signed later that day. Hale has been living with his brother in San Diego and training with former longtime NFL kicker John Carney. Hale came to the United States in late 2017 and went 27-of-34 on field goals last season (79.4 percent) while making 36-of-38 extra points. He made 43-of-54 field goals (79.6 percent) and 71-of-74 extra points in five years at Oklahoma State. Hale grew up playing soccer, tennis and wakeskating, a sport he described as “skateboard tricks on a board on the water.”

Lots of interesting nuggets in this one:
- On Tuesday, our Player of the Day was defensive end Brenton Cox. He had another excellent day. He stopped back-to-back runs by Emanuel Wilson and Jarveon Howard, with the latter creating a loss of about 5.
- Right tackle Zach Tom got a lot of reps during his second day back in the lineup following a torn pectoral. He was excellent, per usual, including stopping a bull rush by Kenny Clark. Later, he led a screen that picked up 9 yards. He was fired up about that play.
- The quick-hit perimeter passing game has been terrible for most of the summer but a pass to Dontayvion Wicks gained about 10 yards thanks to excellent blocks by Melton and tight end Tyler Davis.
- On back-to-back third-down plays, Lukas Van Ness (and Wyatt) pressured Love into an incompletion and batted down a pass.

A shorter practice today with a little bit of game prep
Pressure by Enagabre (maybe sack). Love throws anyway and completes to Wicks over the middle. Love follows it up with a bullet to Musgrave over the middle who makes a fantastic hands catch in stride. AJJ with good coverage but just tip your cap on that one.
Love drops one in a bucket for Lloyd but it’s well contested by McDuffie. Both players tip the ball up a couple times and Lloyd comes up with the catch but out of bounds by the time he came up with it.
That false start on the first play of team earlier by Sean Rhyan was costly. Jacob Monk has been in his spot in team ever since.
Another nice play by Brenton Cox with a pressure on Clifford. Nice hands by Lloyd to come up with a leaping catch on a bubble screen but defense all over it. Heads up play by Bo Melton. He was supposed to go in motion but the tight end started to go in motion on accident. Te got lined up correctly so Bo could go in motion but Bo wisely waves it off because the play clock was winding down and they wouldn’t have got the play off in time. Wicks end around goes nowhere.
Love with a gorgeous throw to Melton in the back of the end zone for a td in red zone. Really nice block by Newman on Clark to give 10 time. Stokes comes up with a pick on the next play. Intended for Watson. Not sure if Watson didn’t see it but he didn’t make a play for the ball. Karl Brooks with another big time pressure. Wicks td on the next play at the goaline with McKinney in coverage. Karl Brooks with another immediate pressure - Love throws to Sims but LVN in coverage gets a PI call. Huge day for Brooks already.
Cornerback Eric Stokes picks quarterback Jordan Love in the end zone from inside the 5-yard line.
Love rolled right and tried to connect with Christian Watson, but his pass went straight to Stokes.
The defensive has 17 interceptions in camp, with seven off Love.
Sean Rhyan is getting first-team reps at right guard with Jordan Morgan out because of shoulder injury. But on his first rep, Rhyan false-starts.
Rookie Jacob Monk is now with the starting offensive line at right guard.
With Jenkins and Morgan out, Royce Newman is playing left guard. He had been buried on the depth chart for much of camp.

"Rookie cornerback Kalen King continued a strong week of practice, as well. King was a seventh-round pick and the third-to-last player selected in this year’s draft. His plunge in production played a role, to be sure, but so did his 4.61 in the 40 at the Scouting Combine and his 4.56 at pro day.
The Packers have used King a lot in the slot, where the 40 time isn’t as important but his quickness and instincts are accentuated. In a span of four plays, he stopped Grant DuBose on a quick pass to the flat, shot forward to potentially stop tight end Joel Wilson short of the marker on third-and-7 and beat his blocker to help stop running back Emanuel Wilson for a minimal gain on a screen."

I’d have to go back and check but it really does seem like Carlson literally had that one bad day and has been equal with Joseph every other time. Ahead of him by one in family night, so maybe behind him by one some other time.

I really wanted a new kicker after Carlson blew that kick against the 9ers. But I know he was a rookie and perhaps he'll be better this year. It's his position to lose right? So, if he matches the other guy kick for kick, he should win that position??

I do wonder if it continues on this trajectory - both performing relatively well - which direction the team will go. We can all look back and be critical of Carlson’s season last year but, believe it or not, he had a better FG% than Joseph. And Joseph was kicking indoors for home games. Carlson was worse on XP conversions - he missed 4 while Joseph missed only 2 - but, again, there’s an environment factor to consider.
In other words, I can’t say I completely trust Carlson going forward at this point, but neither do I trust Joseph to continue on the accuracy pace he’s set this PS. His career history (82.6 FG%; 90.1 XP%) says he won’t. And that spans 5 years now. I think it’s safe to say he is who he is. Carlson? Who knows?

I actually thought he was a really good kicker, but I guess that was just based on his performances against the Packers. I was surprised his career percentage was as low as it was. Still, the way the NFL works now and especially with the new kickoff rules, I will take an accurate kicker over the big leg all day. Screw the 55+ FG's. Go for it or punt.

Of course, so would I. Not at the expense of <50 accuracy, though. Those kicks should not be a coin flip, they should be next to automatic. Given the choice between the two, I will take the surer thing from shorter distances.

That works in the regular season. In the playoffs you need to secure points when you can get them.
