Jaire coming off that 5th year option, highest DB contract in NFL history, Elgton's contract expires, going to get the highest paid interior OL contract in NFL history and Savage and Gary both going to be jumping to their 5th year options. Keke and Sternberger could both be something.
Then also the big 4 FA's, Smith, Smith, Turner and Amos all unsigned too.
Then throw in Mason Crosby and Dean Lowry, if Dean isn't a starter, Keke is.
If you include those on 5th year options, that will be potentially unprecedented 10 starters.
And that also might be the year it finally makes financial sense to move on from Aaron.
me too.
It also makes a case to start hoarding draft picks. I believe the Packers have 9, counting compensation picks.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020 11:05
But in a way, it helps, right?
It's a reminder that our window extends 1-2 more full seasons, and that we should enjoy this season now while it's happening and we don't even have to kvetch about the Rodgers-Love thing for another year or two.
I'm having fun exactly because I know that the 2023 contract situation on this team is going to force the start of a new era or new window (not necessarily with Love, but that we simply have too many elite players to keep beyond that--GOOD PROBLEMS TO HAVE)
I mean, of course, it's scary that far out, but our plight will be supplemented by three draft classes heading into 2023 so I imagine many of those things will just work themselves out naturally. Obviously, any core player you do the deal and keep. It's the Packers way. But, if that is the first year post-Aaron, I wouldn't mind letting some of those guys walk that year and save for the build up back to the top. Let's say Love takes over, takes his lumps, and then shows he is the future and we extend him. I would rather, then, build the team around him rather than playing on a 1-2 year window with all those 2023 re-signings. Long, long way away and every decision is not made in a vacuum, but I think a QB transition year is the perfect time to let some of those guys walk and take the comp picks.YoHoChecko wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020 10:47ding ding dingBF004 wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020 10:46Not looking forward to that 2023 offseason.

The new TV deals will be signed between now and then and that's a massive boost to the salary cap. 2021 will be an off year, but 2022 and 2023 should return to $10M + increases in available spending. Its likley to be even larger cap growth given the streaming, gambling and 17th reg season game adding to the league's revenue.
While very, very true, our lack of pressure to get deals done prior to that means we are going to be paying a lot of top of the market deals all at once rather than spreading it out. The deals get bigger, but % to cap largely remains the same. I guess we could get Jaire done a year early or Elgton and realize some discount, but as others have already pointed out, I expect some of these guys to get absolute top of the market deals. They have earned them, so far.BSA wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020 13:10The new TV deals will be signed between now and then and that's a massive boost to the salary cap. 2021 will be an off year, but 2022 and 2023 should return to $10M + increases in available spending. Which brings us back to that Fun Feel...
I think 10 picks, maybe 11. Should be a 4th for Blake, Bulaga should be capped at a 5th under the Alan Faneca rule, and a 6th for Kyler.Christo wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020 11:34It also makes a case to start hoarding draft picks. I wonder how these players who opted out count against the teams they are under contract to? Take the Packers for intense, Funchess chose not to play, yet did still receive some money, not all. Is he still under contract to the Packers for next year?BF004 wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020 13:25I think 10 picks, maybe 11. Then maybe a 7th for BJ Goodson, depending on if they count Devin Funchess or not in the formula.
Interesting 2021 factoid. Carolina does not own their 7th round pick which goes to Buffalo, which is the result of a 2018 'future conditional draft pick' trade for Marshall Newhouse.
Matter-o-fact, Newhouse plays for the Titans. I saw him on a pre-game camera snippet walking back out of the tunnel and thought...no way he’s still in league. Looked up their roster and had an “ I’ll be damned” moment.Christo wrote: As for Marshall Newhouse, is he still in the league? If so, he's gotta be pushing 10 years now.
10 years, 9 teams, 81 career starts. Started 9 games for the Pats last year. Journeyman through and through.APB wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020 19:55Matter-o-fact, Newhouse plays for the Titans. I'll say this for the guy, he's going to get a nice pension. And good for him. I know he was on the Patriots for awhile, did he win a ring?salmar80 wrote: ↑29 Dec 2020 20:1210 years, 9 teams, 81 career starts. Started 9 games for the Pats last year. Never imagined Newhouse would have this kind of a career. Other TT OL also have had some unexpected careers elsewhere: Giacomini, Barbre and Meredith. Colledge and even Tony Moll had multiple years elsewhere.
BTW, 2007 7th round LS Clark Harris is still going, may outlast AR and Crosby as longest NFL career for a TT draft pick .
I don't think he did. He had a cup of coffee with the Pats in 2019, but that was his only season there.Christo wrote: ↑30 Dec 2020 10:14I'll say this for the guy, he's going to get a nice pension. Also, didn't Colledge go into the military after football?
I think you speak for everyone here, some of us just aren't as vocal about it, and for various reasons, I know for me, it's this Packers team that perks me up each week, I dread bye weeks, and I really hate night time games, I just can't seem to stay awake between supper and 8:30, heck I was lucky that I woke up at 8:20 for the Titans game, forgot to set my machine to record the game, and there fore can't argue with anyone concerning aspects of it, cept we played really well ( Barnes had 7 tackles, McGinn is blind as a bat)YoHoChecko wrote: ↑30 Dec 2020 11:09I just want to say, I am totally in love with being a Packers fan this year.
