If the Packers don't keep Jones they almost must resign Williams. If you subtract the salary they must pay to keep Williams from the tag for Jones, he is even more affordable.

So what is the downside? That Jones is pissed? So what, he is still a multimillionaire paid higher than most of the team. The rest of the team wants a SB ring, this improves their chances. A SB ring makes everyone on the team more valuable when they hit FA. And if Jones holds out he does not get paid and goes into FA a year later a year older and out of football shape.

What is the downside?
Jones played well for the team. Jones was a good teammate and citizen. Jones did not pitch a fuss playing on a rookie 5th rd contract while providing top end production.

The downside is you have a player who way outperformed his rookie contract and when it came time to reap the reward, the Packers balked. At least that is what the locker room will see. It’s a reputation that lingers and certainly not conducive to signing/drawing in other players and has a high potential direct negative effect on the culture of the organization.
well said :aok: we already have a reputation as a team some players wont come to, heck Snacks Harrison seemed to come as a act of last resort last year among others prior.

we may tag Jones, if memory serves, when we tag a player it usually is because we just where unable to reach a deal prior to the start of FA, then later a deal is struck, that might not be the case with AJ, however I hope the team can keep making some kind of contract offers, cause tagging pisses players off to, heck some players ( Bell with Pitt) would rather sit a year then chance injury in a tag season, can hardly blame them for that.
this is just a bad year to be without a contract.

I hardly think tagging a position that nobody who has paid a QB pays, will blow our credibility among players. It might go the other way as some guys are going to say, “You don’t pay RBs but they do pay my position. Now there might be some cash available.” This is a different year of course with the cap dropping so you might do things out of the ordinary.

When Is the last time we tagged anyone? Corey Williams when we moved him to the Browns. Tagging Jones and sending him off to a team like the Jets who aren’t paying a QB and can get him the payday while tossing us a reasonable pick might be the way to go.
