My opinion on why Gutenbumst did not push for a championship is that instead of bringing in good players he just kept pushing money out to future years for bad players. Or just players he should have been letting go so he could get the cap under control. Darnell Savage, Kevin King, Billy Turner. These were guys that should have been outright cut instead of adding void years.
I had to have said about 100 times when the cap went to &%$@ the team just needed to take its medicine and move on from the bad players and contracts they had. You eat it for a year but you come back strong the next. Instead we pushed all our cap on top of having a draft that did basically nothing for the championship window we were in. Even now we have Gutenbumst making some questionable contract decision like extending Preston Smith and Kenny Clark when they are in the age you want to be moving on from them.
But hey we got a bunch of playoff losses to hang our hats on so that’s cool.

I agree with this 100%.
I also believe Gute wanted to trade Rodgers to Denver after 2021 and that he would have re-stocked the roster faster and with more premium draft picks for the post-Rodgers era had he been allowed to do so, but Murphy stepped in and stopped the deal.
Of course, preventing the GM from trading the star QB until he went into hibernation and forced the team's hand sort of lends credence to the argument that the Organization is/was primarily concerned with remaining competitive.
The fact that Murphy gave Rodgers a big new deal in 2022 when most everyone knew the relationship was all but over (especially with Davante not returning) is just more circumstantial evidence of what the priority has been in my view.
My hope is that the new President will unleash Gute. We shall see.

To clarify, I'm not advocating for how to best build a team. I've been around long enough to see the success and perils of any way you take to the top. I'm simply saying, I do not think for 1 second, that any of these guys in charge don't have winning a championship as their ultimate goal as some are claiming. a championship is not going to be a cool consolation prize for them, it is the ultimate and something they strive for.

10 playoff losses since 2011. If he lets Kenny Clark walk and he has success on another team (see Rasul Douglas) then it's a stupid move that should have been a no brainer re-sign and he is cheap and doesn't want to win a Super Bowl. See how easy that is?
Read More. Post Less.
The only non move that still makes me mad is when we low balled the Raiders for Randy Moss and the Patriots stepped in.
Everything else, I truly think there are efforts there, and I appreciate that the team for the most part has always stayed competitive. And we've also had some pretty epic misfortunes in the playoffs that I don't know if one player would have fixed. One player wouldn't have stopped us for crapping the bed against Seattle in 2014. One player wouldn't have led us to victory over Atlanta in 2016 or SF in 2019. The only player that could have helped us beat Tampa in 2020 is David Bahktiari but he was on our team, just hurt. It's easy to play 20/20 hindsight, but the fact is, since 2010, our team was good enough to be in position to win championships, but just lost the games we could have won at least 3 of those years. We easily could have had 4 Super Bowl Trophies in the Rodgers era, and the teams were already good enough.

were are you getting this opinion, or is it just yours? Gute didn't even want to trade Adams, so why would he want to trade Rodgers, were Gute failed was not stocking the WR room till it was to late, this after recently resigning Bakhtari a year earlier, nah Gute was keeping everyone he could because he thought the team was better then it was and thought we actually could make a run.LombardiTime wrote: ↑09 Oct 2024 09:26I also believe Gute wanted to trade Rodgers to Denver after 2021 and that he would have re-stocked the roster faster and with more premium draft picks for the post-Rodgers era had he been allowed to do so, but Murphy stepped in and stopped the deal.

I’m with Lombardi on this one. I think Gute did want to trade Rodgers and Murphy said no because the reigning MVP stuff. Gutenbumst draft Love for a reason. Eventually he was going to play. There is no proof and we might never get the truth but I think the signs all point that way. Ultimately Murphy had final say on major decisions and there was too much smoke to the Denver deal for there to have never been any conversations that took place revolving around a trade.Yoop wrote: ↑09 Oct 2024 11:04were are you getting this opinion, or is it just yours? Gotta give Watson a lot of credit for what seems to be the emergence of his leadership. Calling it like it is at his locker, while also taking up for doubs…while also giving him a hint of accountability.
Watsons career has been a bust bc he can’t stay healthy, but at least he seems to blame himself for that, not others.

I’ve called it how it is. I’m one of the few people in support of the Douglas trade on this board. We gave up a good player at a deep position at the time for a premium pick. That’s a good move.
Meanwhile we resigned an old player who has been declining per his grades to a big deal. That’s a bad move.

The CB was never that deep. Jaire misses half his games, stokes isn’t very good and has missed probably half his eligible games, and Nixon basically sucks as a cover corner. Douglas was one of the few playmakers the defense had at the time and he was cheap, we’ve never selected a corner as good in the third round.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑09 Oct 2024 21:51I’ve called it how it is. You are wrong about the trade

I wasn't outwardly against the Douglas trade but the return on him (R3 Ty'Ron Hopper) hasn't exactly been a boon.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑09 Oct 2024 21:51I’ve called it how it is. I will say the circumstances surrounding the trade made sense. We were a struggling team at the time and the compensation was favorable. Can't deny I was disappointed to see Douglas go, though. Loved him as a player for us.
CB, edge rusher, two most important positions on defense, and Douglas at that time was our best CB, with years of playing ability left, so just because the defense over all wasn't great at the time, is no reason to trade him, a bird in hand so to speak, and he would fit in well this season.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑09 Oct 2024 21:51I’ve called it how it is. as to that Denver trade for Rodgers, all smoke and mirrors, Heck Guty was reluctant to trade Rodgers to the Jets till a couple month before it happened, nah, Guty counted on Watkins, and his draft picks to be more able to produce then they did, a OL that could better protect, and a defense that never materialized, and the fans that wanted to keep him. jmo

All I know today is McKinney has been off the chain. And a couple of the rookies seem to have the lights on. On the other hand some of our vets on defense are under performing. I'm blaming Hafley first.
Will be interesting to see if the D can keep the water bug between the hashmarks for 4 quarters on Sunday. Too bad forearm shivers and body slams are illegal now.

While it looks as if we have finally found some real safeties, we do not have good CBs or any real depth there at all. I had no real problem with the Rasul trade at the time, in hindsight it has been bad. Our CB play has been little short of pathetic this season and we could certainly use a CB like Rasul.
Getting back to the topic of the thread, what are everybody's expectations for Doubs this week?
Does he get fed as the squeaky wheel and/or a welcoming back into the fold type game?
Or does he see reduced snaps, fewer targets, and an overall diminished role on a team that preaches accountability?
If Watson is also back, I tend to think Doubs will play a diminished role. Not as a punishment or out of vindictiveness, but because he was never really a focal point of the offense before this episode. Yeah, he's had moments and standout games but with the return to a full compliment of weapons, and the emergence of Kraft, I just don't see a need to involve Doubs much. He's not extraordinarily talented enough to warrant it.

whomever is hot, gets the front burner , I thought that was a good point someone here made a month ago, it's not necessary to have a designated number one, so long as one of our guys steps up each week, and between Kraft, Reed, even Watson, Doubs, Wicks, that shouldn't be a problem.APB wrote: ↑10 Oct 2024 10:16Getting back to the topic of the thread, what are everybody's expectations for Doubs this week?

I doubt we see any changes with target numbers for Doubs, he'll be welcomed back in as though he never left. jmo

IMO Romeo and Kraft have the best and most reliable hands. So I'd hate to see Doubs experiencing a diminished role relative to Watson, Melton or Heath. Reed ........... not so much.APB wrote: ↑10 Oct 2024 10:16Getting back to the topic of the thread, what are everybody's expectations for Doubs this week?

First thing to remember about any playoff loss is that it first came with a playoff appearance. Would be nice to compare playoff appearances between the Packers and Bears/Vikes/Lions.RingoCStarrQB wrote: ↑09 Oct 2024 10:0910 playoff losses since 2011.
