Packers Huddle

I was thinking about which fanbase has had the roughest last ten years. Despite being the media darlings of the NFC this season I think that would be our dear friends in San Francisco.

In the last decade their team has had two golden chances a Superbowl victory and both times come away empty handed. I reckon there's probably nothing worse in sports than a Superbowl loss for acute, dream crushing. The margin between celebrated immortality and defeat and ignominy is razor thin.

And the 49ers were leading by 10 points with 8 minutes to go against the Chiefs.

0-2 in Superbowls this decade must feel awful.

And when they weren't losing Superbowls they were stinking up the joint with some pretty dire seasons.

The below graph shows cumulative records over the past 20 years. The 49ers rank 20th. Behind the Dolphins, Bears and Titans. They have almost identical win percentages as the Jets and Bengals.

Also, reading through a thread from the most recent Superbowl loss, I'm struck by how frustrated they were with their QB in the final moments when it counted. Made me happy to have Rodgers under centre, and hopefully another guy who can succeed him when the time is right.

I live in the Bay Area and 49er fans are pretty fair weather. They hated Favre with a passion because he beat them. I’m getting sick of Rodgers not being able to fulfill his “not as sorry at the 49ers will be for not drafting me” statement.

I agree, but only because the 2 Super Bowl appearances ended in losses. Had they resulted in wins or even 1-1, then I definitely wouldn't pity them, and I might even be envious of their success.

IMO, the whiners have a really good GM in John Lynch. Also, a good coach who knows how to put the hammer down.

I’m not sold on MLF yet. There are three losses last year that stand out to me. The Chargers and both Niners games. He didn’t seem to be able to create a good game plan or make adjustments.

I’m not down on him either. Just waiting to see a game where he clearly out coaches the other team. Hopefully this year he progresses.

Reminds me of the Vikings. They always seem to draft well. Spielman is a master at manipulating the draft, either conning other teams out of picks or getting guys that I always seem to want like Jefferson or Ezra Cleveland this year. Even his trades are solid getting great value for Diggs. They have a respected coach. And yet, they never seem to get it done when the season rolls round.

I guess I put it down to mediocre QB play. Maybe both for the Vikes and the 49ers. There's only so much clever wheeling and dealing can get you if your QB is Kirk Cousins.

I was there in person live on both January 6, 1996 and January 11, 1998 when the Packers beat them handily both times. As I recall for both games the Niners fans did not seem devastated as they left 3-COM Park.

T'was much different when the Packers lost to the Giants in the 2007 NFC Championship Game. Leaving Lambeau Field that night was somber. No one said anything. Just left and quietly disappeared in to the evening. It was exhausting game partly due the single digit temperature.

Oh yeah. That Super Bowl 32 nightmare was a very bad day for Packers fans. The 4th quarter was brutal. Glad I was not there in person that day. Watching on TV was bad enough. Still see the Elway cartwheel highlight every once in awhile on NFL Network. Now we know what Cowboys think when they re-watch the Tom Brown INT and the Ice Bowl 31 Wedge play. Ouch!

As opposed to 3 NFC championship losses? 3 playoff losses in OT in which the offense didn’t touch the ball? Idk about that.

I get that. In theory. But reading the thread from the 49ers forum they were devastated. They were 10 points up with 8 minutes to go and choked away a Superbowl ring. That will haunt them for decades.

Getting beat in the NFCCG is just one more defeat and will be forgotten about. Not nearly the same level of pain.

haaaa, they brought the run, against a thrower, the thrower won like a announcer said, once a OC figures out the weakness in your defense then it becomes who can outscore the other, and the passing attack has the upper hand, something like that, probably why SF moved up to take Auiyk, smart pick.
