Packers Extend Gary 4 Years - $96M

Good signing. One guy to build a squad around
I can get on board with this. Good signing.
I wonder about the timing of it, though, with the trade deadline tomorrow. Gary was in the final year of his contract and counting $10.8 mil against the cap. This extension likely alleviates some of that, right?
Surely the Packers aren't gonna be buyers tomorrow...?

Great news. Glad it didn't take Bosa money.

Gary posted the details on his X account. He reported a value of $107,532,706 with a $34.6 million signing bonus. A source said the deal includes about $96 million in new money on top of what he was scheduled to make in 2023.
Officially, according to a source who had access to the specifics, the signing bonus is $34,636,928. The base salaries are $4.9 million in 2023, $1.3 million in 2024 and $6.8 million in 2025 before soaring to $18 million in 2026 and $21 million in 2027. The deal includes roster bonuses of $6.2 million in 2024 and $8.7 million in 2025. From 2024 through 2027, there are annual workout bonuses of $700,000 and gameday roster bonuses totaling $800,000 per season.
The new-money average is $24 million per season. San Francisco’s Nick Bosa is by far No. 1 among edge defenders at $34 million per season. Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt ($28 million), the Chargers’ Joey Bosa ($27 million) and the Browns’ Myles Garrett ($25 million) are ahead of Gary; Gary is just ahead of the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby and the Chargers’ Khalil Mack ($23.5 million apiece).

Actually costs us more. I think any savings dried up a couple weeks ago.APB wrote: ↑30 Oct 2023 07:42I can get on board with this. Good signing.

That’s a good deal. It had to get done. There are very few players on this team that can be considered future centerpieces.
He needs to really start developing as an edge setter and get more disciplined. This season he hasn’t done his 1/11 against the run. He’s left his linebackers and DBs out to dry multiple times because he’s not doing his assignment.
Now as a pass rusher it’s hard to find many players that have been better than him.

With the 2023 cap number barely changing (an increase of just under a million), this really does seem like the new money new years extension is a pretty accurate description. Let's say 4 years for $95 mil instead of 4 for $96.
Puts him in the $24M/year range which is where several of us seemed to hope he'd land after starting to see some $30M/year EDGEs. I think unless it is structured stupidly, this deal will age well. Glad it got done. Did not want to see Gary have the leverage of free agency to max out his deal with us near the deadline.

Puts him at 5th or 8th among Edge rushers depending on new money or total contract. Pretty decent deal.

little more then I hoped, but still a reasonable price for us, I like his attitude, I think he'll play above what we just paid
Great deal. Good to finally get it done, Gary may just be our best player on the roster, you have to wrap him up.

no problems giving guys like Gary the money. I'm happy for him and us.
Good for him. That is a fair deal for both him and the Packers. He will be even better next year with another year removed from the injury.

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere else. The deal was signed Saturday night right before Gary had his worst game of the season.
Do with that what you will.
