POSITIVES

— Has the speed to carry running backs and tight ends down the field on vertical routes along with the movement skills and change of direction to cover shorter routes in man coverage.

— Has the speed to close in coverage or on the quarterback when blitzing.

— Physical and not afraid to throw his body around when coming downhill.

— Has a decent rip move to defeat blocks against the run or when rushing the passer.

— Impressive speed gives him good sideline-to-sideline range as a run defender and allows him to make chase-down tackles.

NEGATIVES

— Wiry. Needs to add size and strength to take on blocks and hold his ground against offensive linemen in the running game.

— Lacks the strength to get re-routes when he gets his hands on tight ends. Struggles to stay in phase when tight ends get physical at the top of the route.

OVERALL

At a high level, Ty'Ron Hopper is a solid coverage linebacker who could contribute on special teams in the NFL. He has impressive speed and movement skills which show up the most in man coverage against running backs and tight ends. He can also close in a hurry and can be an asset as a blitzer on third downs.

Against the run, Hopper has impressive sideline-to-sideline range against outside runs and is physical when coming downhill, but he lacks the size and strength to hold his ground against offensive linemen. That leads to him having to work around blocks, which will be more difficult against more athletic linemen in the NFL.

Overall, the Missouri product can be a solid rotational linebacker as a "Will" in even fronts for a team that runs a lot of man coverage. His speed and willingness to throw his body around can be an asset on special teams, which he has experience doing at Florida, but he didn't participate on many special teams over the last two seasons after transferring.

After reading two scouting reports quickly, I have determined that the NFLNetwork crew were not expecting him to be drafted tonight and didn't do their homework because it sounds like he's a rangy run and chase space player with pretty good coverage and blitzing ability, but on air they were like "oh, a guy; instincts are fine; bit of a thumper" and moved on

The guys on the Bleacher Report live stream:

"I don't love it; he was down my board. Explosive athlete. He gets anywhere he wants to in a hurry. Where he wants to go is not always where he should be going, unfortunately. Poor tackler on tape from what I saw."

"He makes his mistakes very fast. Special teams value."

They gave the pick a C and B- grade.

Draft consensus was definitely a Day 3 guy behind Trotter and Eichenburg

wasn't on my radar with no particularly outstanding traits but reading up, he seems fine. Promising? Unspectacular. A nice roster spot for a 3rd/4th LB and STer for 4 years before signing somewhere else and hopping around the league for a bit.

More of a Day Three profile in my eyes (limited knowledge) but at this point, pretty similar.

I'm gonna mark this guy down as my "coulda been Jordan Magee" pick and assess over time accordingly. Magee is the same size with better everything (speed, instincts, IQ, at least--maybe not everything)

Not really sure what they see here. Gotta be something. Coverage? Throw him in there on those 3rd and mediums?

Packers definitely have a type they are building at ILB. Smaller. Faster. Rangier with an emphasis on coverage skills.

and zero emphasis on instincts/football IQ

Not necessarily a detriment on these guys, but none mentioned as a strength

Yeah. To be fair not many "football IQ" guys were avaialble that had decent traits. Colson was probably the best but they were just so enamoured with Coop's athetlic traits.

Honestly just don't this pick. There are so many guys like this available tomorrow either via the draft or just sign one Saturday evening.

This one I think you can bitch about with impunity. There isn't a lot to love from most scouting reports.

Yeah, I don't get this pick. He's described as "wiry" and "lacking strength" at 231 pounds. He'll get manhandled by tight ends regardless of his coverage ability, and in run support he's too light.

This pick shows how thin the draft is. Glad we snagged some extra 5th and 6th round picks!

I would have just drafted Spencer rattler to back up Love

I will say this. Every time I looked for a LB in Rd 4/ Rd 5 area in my mock drafts...I always passed on the Missouri LB after reading size, lack of strength, and 4.68 40. I usually opted for the Notre Dame LB instead.

To be fair, the Notre Dame LB went much, much earlier than I expected too

Oh that guy in that tweet highlighted football IQ as a strength! I stand corrected

Not super glowing that Gutey keeps talking about linebacker bodies and special teams when asked about him

Yeah we're excited to get him. He's a warm body in the right general shape for special teams. He runs and hits. Good stuff

Gutey says they hand timed him in the 4.5s and that's how fast he plays on tape.

Scouting reports all mention speed, also. So the 4.68 may not be the most realistic, telling metric on his athleticism, which would be nice.

Ya, will give him that, but the instincts knocks across the board worry me. I have to assume at this point they see a coverage specialist?
