What To Do About The Kicking Game **EDIT McManus Signed

Carlson wasn’t the answer. Neither was Joseph. And now, it’s become painfully apparent that Narveson isn’t the answer, either.

It begs the question: what exactly is the problem?

Is Whelan just a bad placeholder? Is the coaching screwing these guys up? Are the Packers just that poor at scouting kickers?

Until they figure out exactly what the problem is, it’ll be just more of just spinning their wheels in the muck.

In the meantime, what should they do?

Gutey needed to sort out backup QB and K this off-season, both positions went all the way to cut time, and Gutey simply failed at one of them.

I don't blame Gutey for going outside our org to try and find a kicker, but he got the wrong one. And he whiffed on the Carlson pick, too.

I suppose now you scour the bargain bin and home for elderly for a miracle. :idn:

I think Whelan is pretty good. Can boom with hang time, and also drop 'em near goal line. No muffs, no complaints there.

I have no complaints about Whelan as a punter. I just know he’s one of several common variables with all the kicking struggles of the past two years. It’s fair to question whether he is a contributing factor, I think.

Joseph very well may have been the answer. We win todays game if Joseph is our kicker. He made 5 fgs on Thursday.

No it’s not lol

Whelen is a great punter.

Yeah, I don't see how Whelan would be a problem. I haven't seen or heard of any problems with the FG operation or his holding. :idn:

I doubt if Whelan is the problem as we know the long snapper is a problem. I would have to watch it again but it also seems the opposing team is getting too close to blocking the kick also. Which could be either poor blocking or the long snapper.

What to do:

Go for 1st down rather than attempt a FG more often.
Narveson has the look of a football player rather than a kicker. Can he throw the ball? Can he run?

Best of all, avoid 4th down situations. Maybe fewer low percentage deep passes on 1st and 2nd down. Use Jacobs and Wilson more

What, are you his godparent or something? I'm simply suggesting all factors be reevaluated related to the kicking operation. Whelan, as placeholder, serves a key role in that operation.

Either the Packers suck at finding a kicker, which could very well be true, or there's another hidden factor at play. At this point, I'm willing to question everything, and that includes whether Whelan is affecting the kicks with inconsistent ball placement.

Side note: the above has NOTHING to do with Whelan's performance in the role as punter. I guess I need to make that clear, once again.

All I know is if accountability is a message ringing throughout the locker room, Narveson cannot be our kicker next week.

You ain't seen nothing yet. Google Packers kicking woes 1968-1971. 4 years of doggie do horse poop. Then alas, the great Chester Marcol burst onto the scene. :beer2:

I mean, can't be worse than kicking the tires. He just can't seem to kick through the end zone anymore on kickoffs though.

I have accepted we will suck at kicker this year. When you're at this point of the season, these guys are slim pickins'.

That being said, we have nothing to lose. I very much don't mind a carousel of kickers coming through until you land on one. Keep rolling the dice. All it takes is one guy figures out how to put a ball through an upright. Maybe we land on a gem in our 4th or 5th try (keep in mind Narveson is already our 3rd try in the last month)

sorry, he might be a good kid and is working hard, but it's money time. If he can't make them, find someone who can. We can't go into every week knowing we're going to miss a kick, or a couple. It's not like we're lining up for 55 yarders. what was it? 37 and 49? should be able to hit both of those no problem. we can't seem to hit one.

Trade a 2nd rounder for Tucker or Buckner.

I wasn't being serious  , and I'am not sure if Mason would even be interested, I think our goal on kickoffs is to force a return, so he may have the leg for that, but it's doubtful that he still does for 50 yard FG's.

personally I think timing is a big issue, not only does the kicker have to worry about shanks and hooks, he also has to have that kick motion sequence, if the snap is a split second off, then so is the moment the foot touches the ball, when that isn't near perfect, then neither is the kick, just spiffing.

I'd at least work out the top UFL kickers. There were a few with >90% make rate, and that's with playing outdoors with bargain bin snappers and holders. Including a guy with the best kicker name: Chris Blewitt
