I really wonder if he'll ever get another HC job. His name was never mentioned when teams were actively interviewing candidates for their teams.

This was such old news that when I saw this post, I was afraid he passed away or something.

Is it just me or was this very underreported. I don't think I even heard about this until seeing this thread. Maybe I just forgot?

It's also funny because McCarthy came up under Marty Schottenheimer. Marty was a legendary coach most well-known for not being able to get his team over the top. He was a very fundamentals, run the ball, stop the run kind of guy. TONS of regular season success, playoff failures.
McCarthy was essentially the same guy but got that ring early enough in his career that it didn't register. He was a more innovative offensive mind for a time, but then also got stagnant and stale with the ideas from his earlier career era.
Now they've replaced McCarthy with Marty's son, Brian, who loves a run-first offensive attack and who has a long career of showing up as an OC and watching the offense get worse before moving on. Hopefully at some point over the past 5-10 years or so since I stopped tracking his woeful career he's innovated.
But for the most part, he figures to be a run-the-ball, no frills coach whose offensive units will underperform and who very likely won't get any team over the hump. Continuity, of sorts.

I mean, who was the best QB that Marty ever had to work with? Brees before his prime? It's hard for even the all time great coaches to get over the hump. I thought it was dumb of San Diego to part ways with him.

So he has Brees before Brees broke out.
He had Gannon before Gannon broke out.
And Montana when he was washed.
One could say he didn’t have good QBs.
One could also say he didn’t have the staff to get the best out of these guys who were great either later or earlier in their careers.
But he was an excellent coach in many ways. Just not in that way.

That was a rumor way back in January (which is fitting for this thread

)
