I'm assuming this pay cut all but removes any dead cap we would have it we release him. Not that it was a big hit anyway. I expect he'll be in camp and have his shot. If he makes it, he makes it.

Meh. Looks like he will make it to training camp.
I would personally love to get rid of this scrub.

I recall after Funchess opted out ........... there were adamant posts on Packers-Huddle.com claiming he was slow / basically had no upside to justify being on the Packers roster. Is this still the case in light of our receiver situation today? Davante, EQ, Lazard, MVS .......... our TEs. How good or bad is Funchess anyway?

He might be as good as Lazard but doesnt have the experience in the offense or with the QB. Hes a different player than MVS or Davante. Probably equivalent to Lazard and EQ in terms of skillset but maybe physically superior. Who knows with basically being removed from football for 2 years.
I dont give a damn about a picture of some dude who put baby oil on himself for an instagram picture.

But you have to agree he looks like he wasn't spending 2020 on the sofa eating bonbons.

If St. Brown does not get his act together, it will not take much for Funchess to take his spot and even help us decide to let go of EQ altogether.

This is best case for Funchess. He is a hybrid TE/WR that could be a possession receiver. But there is a problem with him as a possession receiver - he has bad hands.
Packers are better off with an UDFA.

ESB I think is likely finished. We aren’t going to carry a ton of WRs in this type of offense. 5 I think is likely and 6 is tops.
We likely aren’t losing Adams, Lazard, and MVS are locks. With this reduction I think they’re keeping Funchess otherwise what’s the purpose of this move. They have to draft at least one. If they don’t it would seriously limit the teams development not drafting a receiver 3 years in a row. As of right now all of their receivers are FAs after this season.
Gutey would go from being kind of dumb to full blown dumb.

You bring Funchess and ESB to camp and see what they have. Not much cost in that, and Funchess isn't guaranteed a roster spot just because he took a pay cut. It's more of sign for him that his seat is searing hot. Having them on pre-season roster means nothing for the draft. I do hope we draft a WR (or two), need to have options for 2021.

I disagree. This pay cut was very likely a matter of the Packers seeing an easy place for cap savings and dictating either take this cut or you'll be cut during a time of mass league-wide roster reductions. Having not played in over a year and not exactly lighting the league afire when he did, Funchess had zero leverage. The Packers had all the leverage and they owe him nothing because he's provided the team nothing. Easy call for the Packers to leverage that position.

But if they had no intention of him making the team they would have cut him outright now. I don't see any upside to dragging it out unless they have intentions for him. For the record, I still feel like he can flourish here.

Right, but at this pay rate, it's easy to say that perhaps their intentions are to bring him into camp and see what they have in a guy who has basically had two years off and will be new to the system.
It's both. Easy veteran presence who might add something. Also, easy cut if he doesn't.

or the record, I still feel like he can flourish here.
Absolutely.
And he can handle the Lazard blocking WR role in addition to his pass catching duties. He
has had time in the MLF offense and is a 5 yr NFL veteran despite the layoff. So he's wayyyyy ahead of any draft pick or UDFA in football IQ, pro training and pro experience. Funchess wins not by running past people, but by out muscling/out jumping them similar to a bball player- and we know he's a good bball player.
His presence allows GB to look at other body types in draft/FA and having another WR who can handle the critical Lazard role gives GB insurance in case Lazard misses time again. I feel pretty certain he'll make the team... and you'll be glad he did.

I mean I think this is a homerun outcome for the Packers.
I am very happy that we get essentially a minimal risk lottery ticket here.

Funchess is an insurance policy. In case 2 or more of last season's WR's badly pull a hammy or land on their leg like Jordy did. And in case whichever WR the Packers draft is only PS material this season.
I don't think that a player who took a year off is a valuable veteran presence. Nor do I think that any of last year's WR's need a veteran presence that Adams does not already provide.

Funchess really took a hit taking the season off, imagine that, a player afraid of covid, or better yet afraid to bring it home to family, whatever he's forced to again prove himself, and at a reduced salary.
Looks like he kept in shape, and with virtual training probably knows the play book, and is ready to compete.

Funchess is a Packer until somebody beats him out. And given his talent and experience - that won't be a late round rookie WR
As far as the current WR's, Funchess would battle EQ and who else for snaps ...?
Adams
Lazard
MVS
EQ/Funchess
?
