Packers Resign Mercedes Lewis - 2 year $8 Million
They signed some nobody long snapper too. Gonna suck when we go to the NFC Championship game again.

wild.
The $2.1 guaranteed tells a bigger story than the topline number; wonder if it's backloaded into year two or if it's heavy on play time incentives or some combo of both
I do love having him in the room and think he's been instrumental in our TE development... but now that he's not bottom of the barrel cheap it's a bit less of a clear-cut emotion.

I love it.
Marcedes perfected his blocking to a level rarely seen from a TE. Only one we've had in my time who could regularly block DEs and OLBs 1-1. Both Aarons are probably elated.
And he has good hands when opponents forget about him 'cause he runs like he has cement shoes...
My guess is that 1st year cap hit is under 2.5M. May have to find the Fountain of Youth to stay for 2022.

I just dont understand Gutenkunst. 4milAPY for a player going to play what? 25% of offensive snaps at best. You have 3 young TEs and 2 of them need game reps. Add in another if you include Dafney.
For what we just paid King and Lewis you could have made a good run at Adoree Jackson if we would have cut Lowry or done a Rodgers restructure. I felt it was time to move on from Lewis but the 4milAPY was insane enough let alone a 2 year deal. Guy will be 38 next season.

So the best player for the Packers who became a free agent this offseason got the worst deal. Good for him.
I agree. Better ways to use our financial resources.lupedafiasco wrote: ↑24 Mar 2021 16:49I just dont understand Gutenkunst. 4milAPY for a player going to play what? 25% of offensive snaps at best. You have 3 young TEs and 2 of them need game reps. Add in another if you include Dafney.

I don't know, this was a no brainer to me, he provides that and then some.
You find a TE than can dominate Khalil Mack on the goalline, 1 on 1, just go ahead and keep him if its for basically pennies over vet minimum.
Couldn't find this on an English tweet.

Again with the assumption that we aren't trying to get these other guys. When will you all learn? Sometimes players just say no to teams no matter the offer.
Just because no one has signed, doesn't mean we didn't offer or lowballed. Maybe we haven't restructured Rodgers because we haven't needed to yet. Or maybe it'll !@#$ him off?
Maybe Gutey should assume we are smarter than they are. Because we are guaranteed to make moves to win a super bowl. Unlike his sorry butt, who only goes to NFC championship games and loses.

I’m glad to have him back but I’m a little surprised by the contract. I get giving him a bit of a pay bump from his $2.25mil he was making but if this contract is anywhere near $4mil/yr then Gute rightly deserves some criticism. No way he’s worth $4mil/yr. This thing had better be filled with incentives.
remember when I said he'd be in G&G at some point this season, he's like having a rangy RT with hands, nice vid of him walling out K Mack for Jones to slip in for the TD, Man I wish we could have had him in his prime years.
after Lewis the blocking ability of the other TE's has not impressed me, as much as we run now a guy with the blocking ability of Lewis is a primary need.

Love this dude on the roster. I wanted to see more of him when Graham was taking all the snaps. With that being said I'm a little surprised by the amount.
I wonder how much this all impacts whether we go TE in the draft at all this year? Bob tendered. Lewis on a 2 year. My guess is we stick with what we have, Jace included. I honestly thought we'd go younger here.
Looks like the front office is really trying to keep the window as open as possible,

Other than this guy, we have a 4th year player, a 3rd year player, and a 2nd year player on the roster. Why would we "go younger" at the position?TheGreenMan wrote: ↑24 Mar 2021 17:57I wonder how much this all impacts whether we go TE in the draft at all this year? Bob tendered. Lewis on a 2 year. I think they'll probably keep a blocking TE on the PS to try to develop Lewis' replacement, but TE wouldn't have been much of a draft target with or without this re-signing. There's a guy from Boise St I like in the 7th or UDFA range to be that PS developmental blocker type. But aside from that kinda guy, not even really looking at the position this year.
I want to see the full details. Is this really a one-year deal dressed as two or is it really a 2-year deal. If the latter, I can understand any frustration with this signing, but I am thinking this is more of another 1-year deal with some dead cap.
Read More. Post Less.
I just hope next year if we make the playoffs and our tackles are getting obliterated he will be brought in to help block and not be warming up the bench or going out for passes. I love the guy and think he can still play, not cheap tho.
I Do Not Hate Matt Lafleur
Exactly. The devil is in the details. I'd be shocked if it was anything other than a near clean walk after 1 year.
"Packers re-signed TE Marcedes Lewis to a two-year, $8 million contract. It includes $4 million guaranteed."
rotoworld says $4 M guaranteed (no link to a source though.) Most likely that's a signing bonus.
And that could be spread over 3 years at $ 1.33M each season.
Vet minimum salary would be about $1.1M, so at the very least - a cap hit of $2.4M in 2021. Might be some per game bonuses too
With some additional salary in 2022 and a dummy void in 2023 to make it up to the trumpeted number of $8M. Just a back-of-the-napkin guess
