A logical future
I am not the ultimate football expert and unlike some on this board, I do not pretend to be. Nevertheless logic rather than pure emotion is important to me and so I have opinions. These are mine, so that the Packers return to respectability ASAP. Which probably means a losing season first.
#1. Trade Rodgers and don't wait until June 1st, assuming that someone will give a mid 1st round pick for him (Denver). If, after yesterday, all you can get for him is a 2nd rounder, so be it. If no one will give a 2nd for him, wait until June 1 and take whatever is offered.
#2. Go with Love. He needs experience but he has all the tools. It is plain that he has the respect of the team. I trust the team's body language more than so called experts.
#3. Let Adams go with Rodgers to a new team.
#4. Fire the ST coach and find the best ST coach and assistant in the league, regardless of costs.
#5. Resign Tonyan and Nijman and MVS on O. Resign Campbell and Douglas on D. Keep both Smith's.
#6. Tell Crosby to retire. If you can't get a kickoff beyond the 20 yard line because it hurts in the cold, it is time.
#7. Tell Lewis to retire. It is time.
#7. Cut the punter. Just cut the SOB. Same for the long snapper.
#8 Cut Cobb. Let King walk. Let Dennis Kelly walk. There are a whole bunch of DB's, ILB's, WR's and RB's who have been around for a few years in the league and have not done anything special, especially on ST's. Let most of them go and hold an open house for UDFA's. You won't find another Sam Shields if you stick with a marginal player who has been on the team for 3 seasons and done very little.
The draft: Prioritize WR. The Packers need a WR#1 and a slot receiver. In mid rounds they need to find a Dlineman. In late rounds they need a punter and long snapper who weighs at least 240. Or tell Jake Hanson to lose 30 pounds and learn to long snap.
The preseason - It is going to be a rebuilding year and so accept the fact that making the playoffs is unlikely. Choose a team based upon value for 2023/24 rather than this season. Let Love play 3/4 of every game with the projected starters. The backups can have the 4th quarter, no more than that.
Probable 2022/23 starter lineup:
Backfield: Love, Adams/Dillon
TE: Tonyan
WR#1 Rookie
WR#2 MVS
WR#3 Lazard
Slot: Rookie
Line Jenkins, Newman, Myers, Runyan, Bakh
Line backups: Nijman, Patrick
Clark, Lowry, TJ
Gary, Smith/Smith
Barnes Campbell
Amos Savage
Jaire, Stokes, Douglas
Kicker: Molson/Rookie
Punter: Rookie

If you are going to purge, then purge. This is still holding on too much, IMO. You want to be in a position to get some FA in 2023 or 2024. At least one Smith and maybe Lowry should go. Hopefully Bak retires since it seems his knee is toast and Nieman can start. Try to replace Amos with a 3rd rounder.TheSkeptic wrote: ↑23 Jan 2022 11:40I am not the ultimate football expert and unlike some on this board, I do not pretend to be. You lost me here. I agree they should certainly try, but odds are there they are not going to be able to accomplish this. Nijman, I believe, is under team control (meaning they can just tender him) but I think it's very possible that not a single one of those remaining guys will be back. Not because they don't want them, but because they literally cannot afford them.TheSkeptic wrote: ↑23 Jan 2022 11:40#5. Resign Tonyan and Nijman and MVS on O. Resign Campbell and Douglas on D. From what I understand, the Packers are 38 mil over cap. Trading Rodgers cuts that to 19 mil or 13 mil if after June 1st. Cutting Cobb cuts it by almost 10 mil. Cutting Turner saves another 9. Cutting Crosby saves 5 mil. Nijman is and ERFA and will cost approximately 1 mil to keep. So now you are 4 mil (or 11 mil) under cap. fyi, tagging Tonyan would cost 9.6 mil.NCF wrote: ↑23 Jan 2022 12:01You lost me here. Now you can probably extend Amos and both Smith's are over 20 mil, extend all 3 and you can keep everyone and still have money for the rookies. Worst case you can go back to Bakh also.

If you have nothing except an insult to say, just be quiet so people don't know what you are. If you do have something to say, lets hear it.Labrev wrote: ↑23 Jan 2022 11:46TheSkeptic wrote: ↑23 Jan 2022 11:40logic rather than pure emotion is important to me (....)

King has to go at his salary. Maybe lowry. Maybe Amos and at least 1 Smith. If you are not going to be competitive for a deep playoff run it is best to blow it all up and really get into a good place with the cap and start new. Just doing enough to get a few million under isn't the way to go.TheSkeptic wrote: ↑23 Jan 2022 12:40From what I understand, the Packers are 38 mil over cap. Although admittedly I am no expert either, here's a few initial thoughts / objections:
1) Get rid of a few of the guys that got injured and couldn't contribute. Yes I am talking about Z and Tonyan.
2) Let Lowry go. In fact let all of the defensive line stiffs go ............ someone knows who they are. Whoever allowed the Niners to covert the 3rd and 7 with a running play should NOT be on the 2022 roster.
3) If Bakh can't start.........then get rid of Bakh.
4) Keep Davante .......... our receiving corp is bad enough as it is.
5) Get rid of Dafney too.
6) Get rid of Burks too.
7) Whoever let the punt get blocked should NOT be on the 2022 roster.
People need to stop the obsession with letting Bakh go. He either retires due to health reasons or he is a Packer. We lose too much money to just let him go. You keep an All Pro LT to protect your QB's blind side if he can play. I'm also okay with letting Dean Lowry stay. His cap savings is only $4 million if we cut him. He is absolutely worth $4 million.
Overall I would make sure Campbell, Douglas and Alexander are my priorities. I would also sign them with a structure of "paying for them now" rather than have their contract escalate so much in the future. Basically, structure it with a high 1st year base pay rather than huge signing bonus so they get the benefit of the money and we get the benefit of a lower cap hit in 2023 - 2025 with them.
All of that will come at a cost. Our WR group will be similar to the Lions this year. It will be bad. Therefore, we turn our offense like the 2019 49ers offense ran. Rely on the run and schematic, QB friendly, routes.

Yeah your numbers are off. I know Crosby at minimum is only a savings of around $2.5 million if he retires/is let go.TheSkeptic wrote: ↑23 Jan 2022 12:40From what I understand, the Packers are 38 mil over cap.
