Carlson
I've seen enough. Bring back Crosby. I feel like we are about to find out what it's like not to have a reliable kicker, and it is going to suck. It's a luxury we've taken for granted for so long. People like to bitch about Crosby but he always made the reasonable kicks he attempted. And even when he'd have one bad game, it would be absolutely terrible but he would bounce back the next week. All of his kicks last year looked pretty shaky but you know what? They went in.
I'd let Carlson kick the rest of the preseason, then see if we have to go Crosby or scour the wire for a K.

Bring in competition.
He needs to know that if they don't go through he's gone. I want that immediate pressure cooker. If he can't handle that then he was never cut out to be an NFL kicker.

I’m not sold on Carlson, either, but Crosby is not the answer. Dude is a career 81% FG kicker. Just two years ago he only made 73% of his FG attempts. That doesn’t even come close to his worst year (<64%). Yeah, last year was a rebound year (86%) but more times than not, Crosby has been a below average kicker. Cold weather, outdoors, blah, blah, blah…spare me.
And he’ll be 39 come September.
Where will his kickoffs get to this year? The 10 yd line? On a good kick?
Carlson may not be the answer but neither is Crosby. Bring in another kicker (or two) and let them go at it. May the best short/long term option win.

The problem with growing pains on a rookie kicker is if he is 6 for 12 midway through the season and we have lost 3 games because of it....the growing pains are worthless because he simply gets cut.
Right now his success rate is bad enough to simply getting cut. I believe this happened to MN a couple years ago in their rookie kicker.
Yep, it was. Just looked. Since MN dumped him his rookie year after a 1 out of 4 FG start, he's since gone on to hit 90% of his FG attempts and has over 95% success on his XP attempts. Has been 1st or 2nd Team All-Pro last two years.
He seems to have turned out alright after some refinement. You could argue MN gave up too quick on him, much like you're advocating for the younger brother.
But usually teams don't wait. We did for Crosby and it brought up and down success.
But I can imagine this forum if we lose 3 close games and the guy is 6 for 12 to start the season.
There is a reason they called Carlson " shankopotamus " at Auburn....he lost as many close games as he won. When he's on he's great but when he's off
Who is getting the feeling, the dark terrible feeling, that this team is gonna be in the hunt at the end of the year for something important…could be already in a playoff game, could be a regular season game to win the division, or maybe a game to secure a wild card spot…and everyone does their job pretty well…all for it to come down to STs, and we get screwed on a missed kick once again.
We cannot roll into the season without giving this dope at kicker some competition. Drafting him was egregious. No reason to double down on mistake and put a potentially surprising good season at Risk.

Egregious? A 5th round pick on a kicker with a big leg? Absolutely bring in some competition, but I trust Biasacca if he thinks the talent is there and can tweak his meachanics for the better. Maybe he can, maybe he can't.Drj820 wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 09:21Who is getting the feeling, the dark terrible feeling, that this team is gonna be in the hunt at the end of the year for something important…could be already in a playoff game, could be a regular season game to win the division, or maybe a game to secure a wild card spot…and everyone does their job pretty well…all for it to come down to STs, and we get screwed on a missed kick once again.

I'm not satisfied with the status quo either, but its early preseason.
Big stage miscues, sure bring in competition, but no way will Guty just dump this guy after using a draft pick to get him

true, but then he has the chance of becoming consistent just like his brother for some other team, he was drafted because he has high side potential.Madcity_matt wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 10:19He's not a lock for the 53 even with the draft pick. this stuff isn't easy, grooving a swing is taught, and takes some time, I agree bring in a pusher, some competition, but my money is on Carlson to be our kicker when the season starts.
kicking requires the same process golfers deal with every year, some are very consistent year to year, most are not and struggle to keep that groove, hopefully Carlson becomes the former.

If he can't consistently hit kicks, we are in no danger of losing him to another teams active roster. We've used the expanded practice squad to carry specialists in the past, I think with regularity.Yoop wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 10:53true, but then he has the chance of becoming consistent just like his brother for some other team, he was drafted because he has high side potential.Madcity_matt wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 10:19He's not a lock for the 53 even with the draft pick. Yeah I think we are in for a bit of a rude awakening of what it's like to need a kicker.
If we were a full-on rebuilding team, new QB, coaching changes, and lots of roster turnover, then I would not mind taking our lumps with Carlson.
With this team, I want to play for the playoffs and a window from 2025-2026 (give or take a year in both direction). I'll trade the great leg Carlson has for a guy who has less range but is reliable within it.
We could maybe have gotten away with it before they moved the XP back. Now that kick isn't automatic. XP misses can't happen. That one point can often be the difference between a W and a L.

I keep forgetting that now since the PS changes that a team can designate 4 players every week that can be protected on the PS from poaching, your right Carlson could be protected.Madcity_matt wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 10:55If he can't consistently hit kicks, we are in no danger of losing him to another teams active roster. Sure, but if he's worth protecting he's probably on the 53. If he's on the practice squad because he can't kick consistently I can't see anyone trying to steal him to their 53.Yoop wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 11:13I keep forgetting that now since the PS changes that a team can designate 4 players every week that can be protected on the PS from poaching, your right Carlson could be protected.Madcity_matt wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 10:55If he can't consistently hit kicks, we are in no danger of losing him to another teams active roster. now your supposing that coaches can't help, and that players don't improve.
have you ever played golf? because the process is the same, and it is hard to retain the sequences involved in a consistent swing path.
and like Love ( tighter then a banjo at a hoe down concert at first ), baptism under fire is a nerve racking thing, last nights PS game was probably the biggest stage he's ever been on, he's fighting for a job with a NFL team, and his career.
Give the kid more time, and protect him, why wouldn't another team poach him and give him a shot, again players do improve, and coaches are paid because they do actually have a resume of success as teachers, Golf coaches make good money because they are successful helping guys re groove there swing, mechanical stuff is correctable.
I don't buy the big stage argument. Anders Carlson is doing what Anders Carlson has always done.Yoop wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 12:50ehhhhhMadcity_matt wrote: ↑12 Aug 2023 11:34Sure, but if he's worth protecting he's probably on the 53. He makes big kicks on big stages. He misses easy kicks on big stages.

Carlson did fantastic under the lights on Family Night that followed a terrible week at practice.
Carlson did fantastic after Family Night and started the game great. Then Carlson did what Carlson does and missed 2 out of 3 XPs but making all his FGs.
As for the bright lights thing...it can surely be a thing. But often times (we said this about Amari Rodgers when the lights of Family Night were too bright for him) it's the beginning of the end.
Personally, I would keep Carlson and bring in competition. I have no issue stashing Carlson on the Practice Squad.

Controversial opinion: I don't care about kickers.
Maybe having a mediocre kicker will lead to going for it on 4th down more, which is statistically beneficial anyway.
I'm not saying it's not a legit concern. It is. I'm not saying I know anything about Carlson or kicker development. I don't.
I just can't bring myself to care; I'll leave it to the rest of y'all. But I also hope there are more people like me out there. I felt this way about Crosby, too. Sometimes I was glad we had him. Sometimes he was overpaid and it bothered me. Mostly, I just didn't think about him.
This season especially, for me, is for chemistry, development, and learning--all around. All over the team. I expect/hope/will bet money on the team making the playoffs, but if our season ends because a rookie kicker botches an important FG in the playoffs, it'll have already been a successful year and we'll be playing with house mokney. Back to Lombardi hunting next year. But this is a transition year to me. Let the kicker be whoever and do whatever.
